As a Heli-Ski Guide in the Chugach, I found my slice of Heaven.  I am excited to share it with you! Learn more about this land:Stunningly beautiful location in the heart of the Chugach Mountains ~45 miles east of Valdez, Alaska. Snow capped and glaciated mountains with active waterfalls surround this quaint valley known as the "Serendipity Homestead." Google search Mt. Billy Mitchell, Alaska, and you'll see what your campsite view will be, as this location is literally at the base of this gorgeous mountain. 2 rivers, the Tsina and Tiekel, and Stewart Creek (All glacially fed...) converge in this valley. Listen to the waterfalls cascading from the Mt. Billy Mitchell Glacier, or rapids of the 3 waterways, as you doze off to sleep. Thanks, Host, Robb Maris

Overview

About

There’s no shortage of state marine parks near Valdez, and Jack Bay can be found 15 miles away from the town. Of course, like many parks in Alaska, you’ll need to fly in or boat in to access this beautiful bay. In fair weather, the bay can be used as an anchorage, but you won’t have much protection from whatever the water wants to throw your way, so keep that in mind and always err on the side of safety. There are campsites and a rental cabin, and experts agree—the best campsite is on the island in the middle of the bay, but several other options also exist. If “remote” and “wild” are two of your favorite words, this could be the spot of your next epic camping trip!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Jack Bay State Marine Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the days are long. Winter can be harsh, with limited access and activities due to snow and ice.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your visit, as Alaska's climate can be unpredictable.
  • Be prepared for wildlife encounters by keeping a safe distance and storing food securely.
  • Wear layers to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.
  • Some areas may be inaccessible during winter; verify road and trail closures beforehand.
  • While amenities are limited, ensure you have enough supplies for your adventure in the park.
