Once run by the state but is now managed by VAA. The beautiful Blueberry Lake campground on Thompson Pass has spectacular 360-degree mountain views. 20 sites are available on a paved loop road near the lake. Vault toilets and a water pump are available for use. Several sites work well as group camping sites. There are no RV hookups or pull-throughs. The McAllister cabin, at the mouth of Shoup Bay Marine State Park, is best accessed by kayak or boat. There is a narrow, tide dependent channel that leads to the inner lagoon where Moraine and Kittiwake cabins are located. Kayaks recommended for access.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 14
This is a beautiful campsite! The western portion of the campground has some of the most amazing views of eye-level mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. The campground itself is secluded, quiet, and clean. Blueberry Lake was supposedly stocked with a bunch of rainbows right before we got there, but we didn’t get a chance to fish it. Just be aware, there is no cell service. You need to go about 10 minutes down the mountain to get any. Otherwise, this is a great find for anyone looking to explore Valdez’ beauty!

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 18
Beautiful, but poorly described
This campground is in a beautiful location. It is also well maintained overall. However, my wife and I felt that the description of the sites on the reservation were not as accurate as we hoped. The site we reserved (18) was not a true campsite (no picnic table, fire ring, etc.) but instead was a parking space in a gravel lot with two other sites. This space was muddy from the abundance of rain and our site was actually occupied by heavy equipment that appeared to be used for road work. We needed to use another site, which if the campground was busier would have been a problem. We were still glad to camp here, but felt that clarification on the booking website would be very necessary to share the differences between the sites.

We were so looking forward to our stay at Blueberry Lake, even though the rainy weather was expected. Unfortunately, the campground was not stocked with firewood as stated on the web site. Once we burned through our own wood, we had to stay inside our motor home and actually left 2 days early. Alaskans are outdoor people and a campfire is important in inclement weather. On a positive note, the outhouses were some of the cleanest around! The scenery was gorgeous and we made the best of our shortened stay.

This is one of the most beautiful camp areas in Alaska, and that's a tough standard to beat. When Alaska State Divn of Parks let it slide into neglect and threatened to close it, local citizens in Valdez stepped up and are running it themselves. It's small, so it pays to reserve in advance during the peak season. Don't trash the place, and don't cheat - even if the campground host is off doing something else - like fishing. It takes a lot of money to maintain campsites, pump out toilets, collect the trash, etc. Come, soak in the awesome view, pick some berries, and help keep this little gem alive.

Shoup Bay - Moraine Cabin
Loved the cabin! Dry, clean, and comfortable. It’s the past mudflats and the straight, then it’s the first cabin on the right. Watch for the ice and make sure to check the tides to make it the last 1.5miles if ur coming in by boat.

Shoup Bay - Kittiwake Cabin
Me and several friends have gone to this cabin or McCallister Creek every year for over a dozen years. The last several years to McCallister Creek. They have always been in good condition, not this year. Here are the major concerns: Stove is broken - will only run full blast, to the point of getting red hot. Stove pipe rain cap is crushed, no doubt affecting proper drafting and a serious safety hazard. Fuel tank lid is missing. Squirrel nest in fuel tank box. Back deck is collapsing, badly unsafe to even walk on. Non safety issues: Broom is broken. View and trail need brushing.

This was a nice campsite with some privacy between sites. All the lots were paved which made leveling and set up for a camper a breeze. Definitely recommend to reserve your spot and pre-pay.

Great view. Note that there was no service of water or dump, so make sure your RV has a full tank of fresh water and empty tank of grey water before spending the night there.

Shoup Bay - McAllister Cabin
Shame, shame!
I've been using these cabins since they were first constructed by AK DNR. They are one of the jewels of the DNR public use cabin system. That the State of AK has privatized such an amazing, highly prized and utilized public resource is a terrible shame, to say the least. The private vendor does virtually nothing as far as maintenance, simply pocketing the profits. This cabin used to have two fire extinguishers; now there is only one, which has been discharged, and has been for several years. The outhouse is filthy and the ridgecap of its roof is missing, so rain and snow infiltrates and it is always wet inside. This too has been the case for several years. The picture window seal has failed and it's fogging. The entry door lockwork, while still currently functional is falling apart. The signpost out front has been broken off for more than a decade. Basic upkeep and ongoing maintenance necessary to any structure is obviously not being performed...in favor of the profit margin. To add insult (and it is in every respect of the word, an insult) to injury, now the private vendor has farmed out the reservation system for these cabins to Hipcamp, who charged $15.90 per night additional fees, which included a "cleaning fee" of $2.50 per night (Nobody cleans these cabins except the visitors when they depart)! Every single party involved in this scam (the State of Alaska, Valdez Adventure Alliance, and Hipcamp) against the citizens of Alaska should be thoroughly ashamed!!

Beautiful and Quiet
Best thing about Blueberry campground is that you zero cell or wifi service. It’s a nice quiet place. The fishing is fantastic, rainbows and Grayling all day king, I do recommend a float tube.

We loved our view from Blueberry Lake campsite 15. We were originally supposed to stay at campsite 19, but there was equipment parked there. Campsite 15 was closer to the bathrooms and had a beautiful view. The campground was quiet and beautiful. We used the pit toilets which were clean and well maintained. We really enjoyed our stay!

Nice spot, reservation useless.
We had a good time, but we arrived the second day of our reservation only to find someone else set up in our spot. After waiting for them to tear down their camp we finally were able to set up. What’s the point of a reservation if others can freely set up prior to arrival. The reservation was made on 7/21, first day of camping was 8/14. Would like a refund.

Improve your cancelation policy to allow rebooking due to covid diagnosis instead of making us lose money just to protect others health by not showing. You should accommodate those circumstances much better

Great location! When I stayed there the area was super foggy and rainy (you’ll have that in Alaska), but on a nice, clear day this would be the perfect campground! Sits right on a nice lake, has great views, isn’t too big, and most of the campsites are spread out enough for privacy. The bathrooms are also nice and clean, make sure you do your part to ensure they stay that way.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 20
Beautiful Camp/Poorly Managed
The campground is beautiful and well maintained but the booking procedure is terrible. On two separate occasions I have booked through the Valdez Adventure Alliance website only to discover upon arrival that our campsite either lacked parking or tent space. IMPORTANT: Only sites 7-14 actually have a dedicated parking spot attached to a camp site. Sites 3-6 are just parking spaces next to a public pavillion. Sites 16-21 are poorly labeled parking spots with dispersed camping nearby. They don't even appear to be part of the campground and are off a dirt pulloff where heavy road equipment is stored. We arrived at site 20 to discover a muddy parking spot, next to an ATV trail blocked by a large boulder. We walked a ways back to discover a site in the bushes that looked nothing like the website. One member of our group had an injured knee and was unable to carry their gear back that far. We had to move to site 10 and pay a second fee to camp as intended. The VAA website states that reservations made less than 7 days in advance may not be honored due to lack of cell service in the pass. Yet, in the five visits I've made to Blueberry Lake, I've never seen a campground host onsite. Cell service is available within 20-30 minutes of the campground and this lack of service does not justify charging 25+ bucks a night to campers who may arrive after long drives to discover that there is nowhere to camp.

Blueberry Lake Camp Site 9
We booked and paid for spot 9 in May for a trip July 27 and 28th, specifically recommended by our daughter only to arrive with a note from the camphost on the reservation board to look for another spot. The note said we failed to confirm within 7 days that we were coming. The campers in spot 9 were rude and only said.....talk to the camphost, over and over...however, camphost was not there. We got the feeling they expected we would show up and would not be happy. The ONLY available spot for the two nights were in the beautiful but MUCH less private sites by the pavilion. The reader board by the bathrooms said reservations could not be guaranteed when booked FEWER than 7 days. We fully expected booking and paying over two months in advance would guarantee our spot. My daughter researched (no internet at the site) and said she could not find any requirements to reconfirm a week before arrival. If we were notified by email about confirming, we did not get it. We are offline most of our stay in Alaska. To rely on internet for communications when it is not available on site is POOR communication. We received this text notification the day we left. Too bad you were unable to communicate like this PRIOR to our arrival.
