About

History buffs rejoice! Caines Head State Recreation Area offers visitors a chance to explore the site of an abandoned World War II fort on the majestic and scenic shores of Resurrection Bay. Fort McGilvray is set against a dramatic vista of alpine meadows and craggy peaks. Be sure to bring your hiking boots to explore the park’s trails (some of which can only be hiked at low tide). Come by boat or on foot from Seward. Once you’re here you can anchor into Resurrection Bay’s great camping (in cabins), fishing, and hunting.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Caines Head State Recreation Area is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor activities. Winter can be harsh, with limited access and services, so plan your trip accordingly to make the most of your Alaskan adventure.
