The best camping near North Point Recreation Area guide

Overview

About

North Point Recreation Area is located on the shores of the Missouri River just above Fort Randall Dam. Enjoy the stellar river and beach views, bike or hike the North Point trail, or sit out on the water and cast some lines for walleye, northern pike, bass, crappie and catfish. There’s even a floating fuel dock and convenience store on-site at the Fort Randall Marina. Volleyball, archery, and golf provide some other recreational opportunities. Oh and keep an eye out for a phenomenon known as target="_blank">burning bluffs where shale ignites and smokes. You’re more likely to notice it after a heavy rainfall.

When to go

The ideal time to visit North Point Recreation Area is during the spring and fall, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth and a full bloom of activities, but also larger crowds. Winters can be harsh, so it's less ideal for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the park's outdoor experiences.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience amid the park's dynamic conditions.
  • Be aware of park hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your activities within this timeframe.
  • Stay informed about any trail closures or area restrictions to avoid any inconveniences during your adventure.
  • Accessibility varies across the park, so inquire ahead if you require special accommodations.
  • Remember to pack essentials like water, snacks, and a first-aid kit, as facilities may be limited in certain areas of the park.
