Originally homesteaded and farmed by settlers in the late 1800s/early 1900s, this property is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can still view remains of the old stone wall the original settlers built by hand on the edges of the property! The Blue Ridge, part of the Appalachian range, was created by the uplifting of the Earth's tectonic plates 1.1 billion to 250 million years ago, making them the 2nd oldest Mountain Range in the world! You will also be able to view huge growths of Mountain Laurel growing in the Pines and maybe catch it in full bloom. The White Pines were planted over 30 years ago. We are 5 miles from Marion, VA: home of The Lincoln Theatre and Emory-Henry Medical College, and a small community hospital. Also close to Hungry Mother State Park (hiking, swimming, paddling, and fishing), Mt Rogers Recreational Area (where the highest peak in Virginia can be found!), George Washington-Thomas Jefferson National Forests, Grayson Highland State Park (where you can view wild ponies!), the Back of the Dragon (motorcyclists' dream ride on Rt. 16), the Appalachian Trail (accessible just 2 miles away!), The Virginia Creeper Trail, The Crooked Road Music Trail, Bristol Motor Speedway, the Carter Family Fold, Abingdon, VA (Barter Theatre), and Bristol VA/Bristol TN. We are also close to mountain stream fishing, small lake fishing, swimming area & beach (In Hungry Mother SP), wildlife management areas & miles of trails in different parks that offer tons of natural amenities and outdoor opportunities. You will be close enough for day trips to Burke's Garden, VA, Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Roanoke area, Hillsville, Floyd, Independence, Galax, Mouth of Wilson, or the Sparta area of North Carolina. We are located in a Köppen Climate Classification Zone Cfb, which is a Temperate Oceanic Climate (or sometimes called Marine West Coast Climate). Yes, the Southwest Mountains of VA have a maritime climate! Think Coastal Alaska, Pacific Northwest, or British Columbia to get an idea of our climate. All of which means our summers are cooler (average of 83 in August) with low humidity, and our winters are milder. So this is a great place to escape the hot humid Virginia summers! We experience four true seasons, and the colors in the fall season are some of prettiest on the East Coast and perfect for leaf peeping! We have deer, wild turkey, bear, chipmunks, raccoons, wild rabbits, Whip-poor-wills, and opossums on the property. Plus, the fireflies at night can be beautiful! Plus, we've yet to see a mosquito! You will be the only camper on the property, my RV is on site and is used as guest quarters when I have company, but this is rare. There is no cell phone coverage and limited strength wifi, so unplug and relax! The Camping Site is part of our mountainside property located in Long Hollow and sits on the edge of 7 acres of pasture, which leads to 7 acres of White Pine Forest you are welcome to use for walking, wildlife viewing, dog walking, etc.. It is conveniently located less than 2/10s a mile from Rt. 16, and 5 miles from I-81. Our neighbors are quiet but you may hear their donkey braying or chickens clucking. We ask that you do not disturb the neighbors or interact in any way with their animals. There is a Firepit and Picnic Table for your use. I try to keep a supply of firewood on hand which you are welcome to use, but if I run out you may have to get some wood elsewhere. You can scavenge fallen wood to burn.....Recent upgrade; 50 Amp electrical service, as well as 30 Amp/120 volt electricity! This was a great spot! Pull through with well-designed leveling blocks provided. Full hookups - all worked well. The host was on hand to greet me and help me get settled. Poor cell service on Verizon - had to drive up to the main road to send text messages, but lovely to be untethered for a night. A nice short walking trail through the trees was a great morning activity.

Like a dummy, I showed up a day early and was happily setting up when the host asked me what I was doing. He then informed me I was a day early. He was such a nice guy about it and he let me stay. The location is safe enough to leave your camper and explore the area. It even has cell service.

Great time camping here! Super nice people! Neighbor brought us fresh eggs that’s were awesome and great quiet area! Lots of room to walk your dog. Wish we had more then just one evening to explore. Plan on swinging by again in the future!

The site is exactly as stated. Easy to navigate and easy to setup. The host was onsite and helped us level the trailer. The hiking is a bit strenuous for people from the flat lands of Delaware, but enjoyable. Even saw a fox while hiking.

Quiet Site

We loved the private site at Tracy and Janet's place. The hosts are kind and considerate, and we enjoyed listening to the roosters and donkey across the road. The site is adjacent to the road, but there is virtually no traffic. Our first evening 4 deer visited the camper. Lovely spot and will definitely return next time we tackle the Virginia Creeper Trail.

The owner is the nicest person! He came right over when we arrived to make sure we knew where everything was and answer any questions. His site is unlevel but he provides ramps and leveling boards and was so helpful and patient as we leveled the rig. We enjoyed the quiet and peace and even braved the cold to do the nature hike up the hill which got our blood pumping. We enjoyed our stay and the location is convenient if you are passing by on Interstate 81 and need a stop over.

We were so glad to have found this place! My husband and I were just looking for a quiet little site for a weekend trip and this was perfect. The host, Tracy, was very nice and helpful getting our camper set up. It was such a peaceful little place. We will definitely be back! If you are looking for a quiet spot to get away from it all this is the place.

Great hammock camping spots too!

I am so glad I found Wild Cherry Shade Tree. Janet's husband Tracy was a terrific host and made sure I had everything I needed. I was only hammock camping so I stayed in a secluded spot in the middle of the property that had complete privacy that was easily accessed in my AWD vehicle. What a serene and peaceful night. Unfortunately, I was only in the area for one night but I'd love to come back to explore the surrounding area and trails, and this is a great location to do it from.

Easy with our 33ft trailer

A must stop - close to 81 and plenty of things to do. The white pine forest is simply magical and reminded me of Unaka mountain. Zero cell or wifi at the campsite, but you can access wifi closer to the main house. Host greeted us and assisted with setting up. Couldn’t of asked for anything better on the start of our 3 month trip.

We RV camped on Janet’s land. They were very hospitable and help us get set up. The property had great walking trails and a cute creek my kids enjoyed playing in. We seen chipmunks and deer. The site was well equipped and enjoyable. The only downside was the road was busy at night but that was no fault of Janet.

Beautiful spot in the VA mountains

Janet's extremely nice husband Tracy met us when we arrived. We had our choice of two campsites. We chose the lower one with electricity, water, and Wifi. Upon exiting the car, I was blown away by the fragrant scent of sweetgrass and sage. Wonderful! The site had cushy soft grass, a picnic table, and a fire pit, which we used to build a delightful fire. The property is very lovely, with many trees and a healthy vegetable garden. A donkey and chickens reside across the street. (I always love to see and hear animals!) We walked up to the "primitive" site, which would be really great to visit another time. More woodsy. Our experience at Refugio was excellent and I would absolutely suggest a visit if you're in the area. Although the property is in the mountains, it's close to the main highway, which was important to us as we were just passing through on our journey south to our home in Florida.

It was raining when we arrived late in the afternoon, but our host came out to assist us in our setup and explain where all of the hookups were located. He also checked on us the next day and suggested a few locals to see in the area. The location is very picturesque in the Appalachian mountain range. We enjoyed hiking up the hill through the pine forest and the quiet solitude the camping site provided.

Tracy helped us level our rv on his site. We bought firewood for 2 nights and it was unlimited. He’s built a small trail in the pines on his property, very nice. Garbage can is at the site as well as full hookups and Wi-Fi. The rooster across the street gets up at 5 am :).

We enjoyed our stay very much. Our host was very attentive to our needs. He gave us great tips about good hikes in the area. The camping spot was very nice. Extra touches like a walking trail and a spot in the woods with an additional fire pit were great.

Camping near animals!

The host met us at site, which is right on a dead-end road. So traffic was very light, 2 cars. We had FHU, table and fire pit. He offered all the firewood we could use. He also point out a path to the river with a tent site and fire pit we could use. Unfortunately, it was too late for us to take a walk, so we enjoyed the fire at our site and looked at the stars. Across the street is several animals to listen to, donkey, goats and chickens. Leveling was a problem for our 30’ motor home. The host had plenty of wood blocks to help, but we didn’t get level. Enjoyed our quite stay.

What a great spot to camp! This was our second stay. So close off I-81. Since the weather cooperated this time we were really able to enjoy the property. Long walks through the meadow and into the woods where there was a lovely covered deck area to sit among the trees. The firepit was great and there was plenty of dry firewood available. We had a nice dinner at the picnic table. This hipcamp is a great place to have the dogs with us and enjoy the outdoors. If we come again we will explore the area more.

This was a great spot to camp. Quiet area, easy pull through hook up and nice property to walk our dogs. Friendly donkey across the street and helpful hosts. Convenient off the highway and easy to find. We will stay again!

It was our first experience with Hipcamp and it was positive. The site is a little uneven so look for the extra boards by the tractor. We enjoyed a night walk on the road by the creek. It was very nice. The donkey across the street was very entertaining. The hosts were very nice. It was definitely a nice stop. T mobile was not available but Wi-Fi was. Overall it was a nice place.
