Nomadic camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
No need to reserve ahead of time! Camp spots are not marked but are obvious, choose site when you arrive, refer to map. Please respect No Trespassing signs! Two (2) miles north of Mexican Hat, UT on Hwy 163, turn East, find your spot! Bigger Rigs: Keep to the right at the 'Y' as the road to the San Juan River is steep and a little bumpy! Next to the Bears Ears National Monument, between Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley along the San Juan River is Mexican Hat where you can camp on private property...as this is NOT on the Navajo Reservation, alcohol is allowed. So many things to see! Goosenecks State Park, Natural Bridges, Moki Dugway, Cedar Mesa! Camp on this private estate that was founded in the 1890's by gold and oil prospectors and where John Wayne later crossed the river in several western movies! The night skies are unbeatable as is the quiet solitude that is sadly disappearing in other areas. Mexican Hat Rock and this portion of the San Juan River are accessible only through this estate that is open for your enjoyment, however, if you wish to camp we now ask for a small fee so we can keep it clean, maintain roads and continue our conservation efforts so all can enjoy it forever! Portable toilets are required!!! And please pick up after yourself, dogs and horses. Pack it in, pack it out. Respect your fellow campers and stay on obvious trails and roads, do know that part of this property is marked as 'No Trespassing', please respect signage. No fee is required for day trips to 'The Hat'.Camp on this private estate that was founded in the 1890's by gold and oil prospectors and where John Wayne later crossed the river in several western movies! Not adding this to my favorites
For the price, I would expect at least minimal restroom services. We have stayed at many different places and for this price we typically get vault toilets and potable water. Why you would charge extra per person when all they consume is another few feet of dirt is crazy. It’s not like they are filling up a port-a-john or using precious water. We actually spent the night last Thursday but we weren’t able to login and pay due to no cell service at the site. We stayed because it was late and we were tired, and we paid because it was the honest thing to do, but in the future we would probably stay at the state park or find some dispersed camping that has the same amenities but zero cost.

JL's land was AMAZING! We loved our stay so much. There were only 2 campers the night we were there and it felt very private and safe. We woke up to watch the sunrise over Mexican Hat and were greeting with a beautiful rainbow. We booked on short notice and the host was very accommodating.

Solo Camping
Loved this spot at Mexican Hat Rock, was the only one there on the upper level. Flat sight with a wonderful view of the rock and sunset. I camp solo and felt very safe

Mexican Hat Rocks
Awesome Spot
I actually loved camping here. I essentially had the entire place to myself. The trails around the campsite are incredible and you can get amazing views of bears ears and the San Juan River. If you look hard enough you can also find a spot to submerge in the San Juan on a hot day (which I did because it was 97 degrees one day I was there) but be careful when you submerge of course as the river is strong. You can hike right up to the hat too. It was perfectly quiet and I slept like a baby when I was there. Very close to lots of other cool places like Goosenecks state park, valley of the gods road, petroglyph sites, etc. I also had an amazing dinner at a restaurant in Mexican hat (can’t remember name but it’s across the street from the 7/11) and an amazing breakfast and lunch at the San Juan Inn. Only critique I have for host is to clean up all the broken bottles and glass around the possible campsites near the hat, that was a little disappointing and sad to see. Other than that, I loved staying here and had a great time and would definitely stay again.

We had to cancel because of a storm. They said it was an easy cancel but we have not heard from them.
