The Desert Moon has been serving the greater Moab area since the coal mining days of the mid 1930's. Thompson Springs began as a railroad stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the mid to late 1800's. It soon became a shipping point and community center for local farmers, cattle ranchers and sheepherders. It is now a ghost-town with a population of 50 people. The Pacific Union Railroad is right across the street with trains passing by around 5 times per day. There are 10 staff members living on site in their RV's. We are always working on projects around the property, feel free to come say hello at any time! Setup your tent and bask in the shade of the multiple fruit trees around the campgrounds. Enjoy some respite before exploring the beautiful canyons and desert landscapes that surround the Desert Moon and beyond. We have 2 showers and potable water on site.

Desert Moon Tent Camping
Big sky camping!
Great place! It was perfect for our first night in Utah. Big sky with lots of stars and the sunrise was incredible! I will say though that the tent campsites are close together and there are railroad tracks close but we only heard one train go by in the night. There are cute bunnies that wander the grounds so that’s a plus! There is also a nice bathroom and shower available. Would recommend!

Camping with dogs
Very cool place and close to the parks while also away from the fray. My dogs saw the most bunnies ever and first time we car tent camped. It was a great place to test sleeping with retrievers in an Outback. We all felt welcome. Clean, quaint and great hosts! Would absolutely stay again.

Expensive for a loud camping site
No problem with the camp site itself. But the area is very loud : you can hear the highway all the time, and the train is passing very very close to the sites so every hour or so, it gets very loud. Despite the noise, we didn't have any hot water when we took the shower (the next morning, hot water was back but it was too late). So 36$ for a loud spot without hot water. We felt robbed. Nest time I will try to find a free spot or I will try to go in a national campground, at least it's beautiful and calm.

Convenient for late arrival but…
This place was convenient as it’s super close to Moab and you can reserve a spot if you’ll be arriving late to the area (best camping in Moab is first come first serve so it requires early arrival to snag a spot) that being said, this spot was not what we expected. The photos of the site are a bit deceiving - we we’re expecting to have a lot more space - this campground is in someone’s backyard in very rundown town and the sites are very close together and scrunched between a crowded RV park and several other people’s backyards. If you’re in a group you’d probably be okay but I would not recommend this spot for solo travelers. Bathrooms were clean and convenient - there is a shower but we didn’t use it, it’s just a minute or two away from a 7eleven. I would not recommend booking this site for several days if you’re planning to explore Moab/Arches/Canyonlands - there are TONS of good campgrounds closer, you just need to scout early.

What a treat! Lol!
I wish we got to stay longer!! Exactly as advertised and the stars were absolutely breathtaking. The site was lovely and easy to locate. Very convenient for arches and Canyonlands, which was an added bonus! Don’t have a bad thing to say!
