Joshua Tree South Private Campsite
Truth be told, I was apprehensive about this spot. We were only there for one night so $115 after taxes & fees seemed expensive for what you get (a patch of land w/ a fire pit). Didn't have friends to split with so...it was pricey. But having the whole place to yourself plus that amazing off roading experience made it all worth it. Good: -Huge land to explore. I'm sure you can find a new trail every day (Even Ben, the owner, hasn't finished exploring everything yet!) -off roading trail. I just bought my Crosstrek and was itching to use it outside. This route was everything I needed -Ben is such an awesome person. His excitement and enthusiasm is infectious. So so: There's a shade structure but the I'm guessing strong winds were to blame for the bent metal pipes. We needed to be creative with where and how you tighten to get the car under the shade. I did a few taut line hitches that held up perfectly during my stay but honestly unsure if it's still up 😅. The property also has a "bathroom" but it's just a toilet seat on a stand. Didn't end up using since nature was more convenient than lugging my pee back home HAHAHA It's also far from the main section of the park so if you were planning to camp here, go to the park, then drive back, make sure you give ample time to return before nightfall. Hard to drive that road if you're unfamiliar

Unique experience
Truly a unique experience. Quiet and private patch of desert out in the middle of nowhere yet only 25Min from the main road. Host was awesome guiding us all the way. 4x4 and ok with driving on rough road is a must. We had a 4x4 sprinter van and it was ok

All in all, great spot!
Our stay was wonderful! Extremely secluded from the outside world, which is exactly what we needed. The stars were PHENOMENAL. We definitely recommend this campsite. Benjamin was great to speak with on the phone, and directions were clear. Definitely need the 4x4, no joke. We had fun driving our jeep and exploring on the jeep trails. Until next time! 💫

My son and I absolutely loved the campsite. It’s like you’re all alone and the only ones in the world. It’s quiet and peaceful. It’s a trek to get to the site but a fun drive. I would absolutely stay here again. It’s a very special spot.

Four wheeling to Good times!
Benjamin was straight up with everything. He let me know that you basically need a 4WD to get to the site. His directions were perfect. The site has a nice shade to stay out of the sun and an outhouse (bring your GLAD Bags). In the evening we caught a beautiful horizon to horizon sunset.

Quiet and a quick respite
It’s a great place to stay—relatively close to getting on and off the freeway without the noise. Lots of stars! Very primitive, which is our scene. Lots of space and we had it all to ourselves, so even better! AWD is a good idea, but even more importantly, a little bit of clearance in your vehicle is good. (We drive an Audi wagon, and that was fine.)

Beautiful property amongst the hillside range. Location is convenient to south entrance of the park. Ben’s directions to the property were clear and we were able to come and go on our own after his initial guidance.

Total serenity
This place is awesome! Definitely off the beaten path and super quiet, no one else around except the other campers on the property and you couldn’t even hear them at all (100+ yards away). Ben (the host) is super helpful. The spots are nice and flat/sandy for tents on the ground. If off the grid tent camping with a bit of overlanding thrown in, this place is a gem.

Great base for day trips
Quiet, private, and a great mid-point between Joshua Tree NP and the interesting Salton Sea. We even explored Anza Borrego for a day using Joshua Tree South as our home base.

Joshua Tree South as a home base
We used Joshua Tree South as a home base for exploring Joshua Tree NP to the north, and Anza Borrego to the south. It was perfect. It’s very private and the sunsets are epic. We prefer dry camping and no neighbors and we got both. Benjamin, the host, was great with communication and was super cool. 10/10 for the experience!

This land is super private and you are surrounded by the hills and desert landscape. The road is was just as much an adventure for off roading — 4WD a must!!! I would not suggest trying navigate it after dark or even in low light. I’d say this is perfect for tent camping but not for car camping with groups. The fire pits are a little walk from where you park, which would have been awesome for tents but you can park around them. We had 4 SUVs and parked them side by side (and pretty much hogged the road) but would have preferred to park in a circle so we could all hang out while cooking together. We felt bad because we didn’t want to disturb the camper next to us but we each played our own music and it was fine. Benjamin was great and made sure to only book one additional camper to not overcrowd the place. He also guided us step by step to the campground from the freeway— super helpful! Our second night we were completely alone (all our friends left) and there were no other campers. The stars were absolutely incredible and it was quiet beyond belief! A little freaky to be completely alone, but very cool.

Best host ever
Ben was the absolute most helpful host I’ve had this is my 5th camping trip using Hipcamp and he made sure we got there safe and everything we needed! I would recommend anyone stay there! You are in this beautiful private desert oasis. We definitely got to really enjoy the night stars and our time alone. Lover every minute of it.

Best View of the Night Sky!
What a fantastic piece of land. We could see the Milky Way every night. It is windy so make sure you prepare accordingly for your tents and items to be staked/put away solidly. The gas station is about a 20 minute drive from the site so we were able to get water, ice, and throw our trash away every day. Would absolutely come back and Benjamin is such a gem.

Perfect Desert Getaway
Perfect spot for a getaway that offers desert vistas, stargazing, hiking, and camping. Within 3 hours of LA and not far off the 10 west near Chiriaco Summit. The site is well cared for and is not over developed. Benjamin, the owner, was very helpful. He guided us in via phone and pins sent via text. He allowed us to take the whole site for a private visit. We enjoyed the area very much. It was raw and rugged with minimal light pollution. We brought telescopes and cameras to capture some wonderful images. You will need a 4x4 to get in, We had half ton trucks and had no issues.

Desert Vistas and a Starry sky!
2.5 hours from LA and very near Chiriaco Summit so you can gas up grab the stuff you forgot at home. Located right off of the Red Canyon Jeep trails and tons of hiking opportunities! Wild life abounds in the form of ground squirrels, desert rodents, jack rabbits and desert tortoise is you’re lucky. This is not a glancing site so bring what you need. There are dugout fire pits rimmed with rocks. And the campsites are leveled out nicely for tents. Some of the sites allow you to park and camp. We brought lots of wood and charcoal. And plenty of food stuffs. The wind was minimal which allowed open fire and cooking. We hiked up into surrounding hills and washes. Bring boots and suitable outer ware. Weather changes quickly so layering is a must. Our main reason for choosing this place was that it is fairly close to home and minimal light pollution. While not as dark as truly remote areas, it still provided for some wonderful star gazing. We brought to telescopes and some cameras to capture the views. Benjamin , the owner, was hands off and welcoming. Ask questions, he has answers. Cheers!

A view of the Milky Way
This is an incredible and very special site. Be prepared for about 30 minutes of 4x4 road to get there, but once you've arrived the desert is beautiful and the night sky is gorgeous. I hiked the hills during the day per Benjamin's recommendation, and really enjoyed the peaceful view.

Private and Quiet
Benjamin was tremendously helpful and attentive. He has a beautiful property; if you desire privacy and primitive camping, you will love it. One suggestion, would be to make the sites a little more clearly accessible to vehicles.

Perfect Secluded Camping Experience
Our family stayed here a whole week for the Holidays. Benjamin communicated with us throughout the booking process and during our stay. This place is perfect for the secluded get-a-way experience if you are not booked with other campers. We had the whole site, so I can't say for sure what the experience would be with other campers nearby. We rented the RV and the convenience of heat, microwave, refrigerator, and water use is unparalleled. Sleeping arrangement is perfect only for 3 adults. There is one bed and a u-dinette that converts to a small twin size bed. One adult only or 2 small children for the dinette is advised. There is an outhouse that gives privacy for toilet use and all trash must be brought out. We dumped our trash at Chevron nearby, but no real dumpster bins available. Just regular gas station small trash bins. Benjamin was great meeting us at the gas station to guide us into the campground, without his guide, there is absolutely no way to navigate there. About 20-30min drive from Chevron and 4x4 or AWD is a must. We never experienced off-road driving before and this is a definitely an experience in itself. The difficulty getting there definitely lends to the seclusion and privacy you will experience. We saw no one expect a few ATV riders that passed by our campsite one of the days. We brought our dogs and they had no problems except the occasional thorn or pebble lodging in their paws. Lots of small critters at night: chipmunks and mice. We were lucky enough to see 3 owls, which makes sense since there are so many small rodents around. We were not so lucky visualizing any milky way due to the light pollution from the moon. However, the moon was so bright and beautiful that we didn't mind. We did a night hike one day and didn't have to use any flashlights the moon was so bright. Overall, we would book and come back here again and recommend this place to all our friends.

This was a great camp site. Benjamin is excellent host. He stayed on the phone with us and walked us through the turns to the campsite. There was a nice, solid, raised outhouse on site. Definitely camping here again.
