Ash Creek: Canyon Views &amp; History

We loved staying here for the weekend, the views were amazing and it is so secluded from everything else. Our host Chad was amazing the whole and made sure we always had anything we needed and showed us a lot of cool spots that are out there. We will definitely be back 10/10!

Gorgeous area. Host was very kind and helpful. Was hotter than I anticipated based on communication with host and my site was in full sun so I hung out in various mining town buildings or other shady spots a lot of the time. Enjoyed a very cool deep swimming hole in the canyon (apparently there’s often a waterfall there). There was a pesky bear when I tried to cook dinner. Seemed non-aggressive but persistent so make sure to lock food in the car and not have anything scented in tent. Was encouraged by host to explore chrysotile mines, which I briefly entered to cool down. Later I found out this is a type of asbestos (a less harmful one but still not great). I’m guessing host has checked safety and whether there are fibers floating around but not sure. So it may be safe but in retrospect I would not have gone it and wish that it had been disclosed.

This place is a hidden gem. I would highly recommend spending a few nights here. The hosts were amazing and very accommodating. We did a mine tour, hiked to a swimming waterfall-endless beauty with very knowledgeable hosts. The history of the land was very interesting!

I had a great time camping at Ash Creek Canyon! When I arrived, Andy offered to take me on a tour of the property on his ATV to help me get an idea of how to spend my time. He was very friendly and knowledgeable of the area and it's history. I ended up taking a beautiful hike along the creek to swim in one of the canyon's several natural pools. Later on I explored one of the old mines, although I wish I had brought extra batteries for my flashlight so I could venture further. At night, the sky was filled with more stars than I think I've seen in my entire life. Overall, the experience felt very private and secluded, which was exactly what I was looking for on this trip. Definitely plan on returning again someday.

Shhhh…!!! Don’t tell anyone about this place!!! I’m going to gate keep Ash Creek because my family, my dogs and I enjoyed every minute of it!!! The creek, the waterfalls, endless hiking, off roading and the 360 views… WOW!!! We will definitely be back to do more adventures at Ash Creek. The only bad thing was I kept forgetting to take photos but the core memories…. We will never forget this place.

Absolutely stunning! One of the most beautiful places I have ever camped, absolutely worth the hike to the waterfall and swimming holes! We even got a visit from a fat furry visitor lol but Smokey was just there for our hotdog buns. Andrew and his family are excellent hosts and we can't wait to come back and try another spot!

Off-the-Grid Gem with Epic Views

Such a fun, off-the-grid weekend. The 3-mile dirt road in is definitely bumpy, so plan your vehicle accordingly—but we made it just fine with a regular car and a small SUV by taking it slow. The setting is a 10/10—stunning canyon views and total solitude (we had the whole place to ourselves, which felt pretty special). Andrew is a friendly, accommodating host who met us at the site and even took us on a tour of the canyon, sharing some of its mining history along the way. One unique part of the area is the old chrysotile mine sites. We didn’t fully connect the dots until later (once we had cell service) that chrysotile is a form of asbestos historically used in construction and during WWII. It didn’t take away from the experience at all—just something interesting to be aware of. Peeking briefly into the old Victory mine was definitely a highlight. Our campsite (#2) was great, with direct access to a trailhead that winds down a few switchbacks to the canyon floor. From there, it’s a beautiful hike along the creek to a small waterfall. Between the peaceful campsite, the incredible night sky, and the sense of adventure, it was a perfect weekend escape.

We LOVED our stay here! A true hidden gem filled with so much history. We brought our two young kids with us and had a blast hiking around with them. We enjoyed the tour Andrew gave us; this canyon has so many stories and breathtaking views with every turn. We look forward to staying here again!

Incredible place and we had a great time. So beautiful and lots of space. We have three dogs and they love being off leash. Canyons and old buildings were amazing and the waterfall was beautiful as well. Most of all the stars were Incredible. This is a great place to sit by a campfire and look at the stars. Andy is a great host.

Wilds of Arizona, Thanks for the great time. Andy made our trip, you have raised a very polite and wise young man. He answered all of our questions and provided a excellent tour of the property. He was very knowledgable about the canyon and history of the area and mines. He checked on us a couple times and was a wealth of information! We thoroughly enjoyed the waterfalls and creek hike. The water was cool and a perfect way to spend the warmest part of the day! There were tons of stars at night. Great hospitality and atmosphere. The Best Kept Secret for Nature Lov

We loved our time in Ash Creek. A beautiful, unique hideaway! We had fun exploring the area, found some great swimming holes and amazing stars. Place is Beautiful. Peaceful. Simple camping at its best. Hiking is more on your own, but hiked creek bottom and swam in the pools, cold. Several small waterfalls. Totally enjoyed. Andrew was great.

This was by far one of our top favorite camping trips for my sons and I. I want to tell EVERYONE how wonderful and amazing it was but I am afraid everyone will want to go. I’ll call it my best kept secret ;) camp host was so amazing when we arrived and gave us a tour. We went exploring and hiking the next couple days and made some beautiful memories. I have nothing negative to say about this spot. It was breathtakingly beautiful and the camp sites all held their own beauty of the canyon.

This has got to be one of the most amazing places that I've had the opportunity to come to!! Andrew is an outstanding host, take the tour he offers!! From the exploration of the mines, to the waterfalls, to the ohv trails, this camp is one of a kind!!! Higher clearance vehicle would be recommended as roads can be rough and run a cliff line, but the end result is epic!! You are quite literally in the middle of an abandoned ghost town.

Perfect campsite near Globe/Tonto

Ash Creek is a unicorn for remote camping on the edge of the Tonto National Forest. Andrew and his son offered us a tour of the canyon and we got to see all the views and learn about the history of the mining operations. The campsite we chose was flat and clean and the clearing was surrounded but trees and steep cliffs. With no light pollution, the night sky looked amazing and the sound of the creek created a nice ambience. We brought our own firewood but there were plenty of loose branches if you prefer to forage. I wish we had booked for more time here, because there is a lot to see and do, including hikes and mine exploration. I had no issues driving around in my Subaru Outback but would recommend reaching out about road conditions beforehand since some of the paths can be narrow or washed out. I don’t get to camp often but hope to be a repeat customer at Ash Canyon.

The BEST campsite!

We had the BEST time camping at Ash Creek Canyon. It’s truly hard for me to find words or sum up our trip in a short paragraph. To put it simply, it feels like we only saw the tip of the iceberg as far as exploration goes in Chrysotile. We cannot wait to go back and learn and explore some more. Our stay was magical. Andy was a top-notch host, super accommodating with speedy correspondence, and truly just a pleasure to be around. His enthusiasm, love and awe for this land shined bright. He showed us around all of the land reachable via side-by-side and gave us a grand tour on the history of the abandoned mining town. There is so much to uncover there. Not only was the history fascinating, but the scenery was BEAUTIFUL… truly enchanting. We camped at site #2, Waterfall Pasture. We were perfectly secluded from other campers and felt like we had the whole area to ourselves.. which was great as we were camping with our two young daughters and three dogs (a rather loud bunch). We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend getaway, and cannot wait to come back. THANK YOU ANDY!

Unplug and Explore

Loved this secluded canyon! Met Andrew by the highway, which was already way out there, then followed him on his quad in my 21' class-B van for 3 or 4 miles to campsite #2. Dislodged my low hanging generator on the rough road, but I knew it was a risk. Well worth it. This property had absolutely no noise or light pollution. It was an old mining town with several old mines still open to explore. I had an unforgettable few days secluded on this property. Zero cellular coverage with Verizon and Wi-Fi wasn't on while I was there. I thoroughly enjoyed my unplugged time. I will definitely be returning.

Creekside camping, nothing better!

We loved the area and the campsite! Falling asleep to the sound of the creek next to us and waking up to the sun rising over the mountains made us wish we had booked a longer trip. Peaceful, private, and stunning. We came in after dark and Andrew met us at the gate, showed us to the site, and was available for anything we needed. 10/10 no notes. Will book again.
