Fort Stevenson State Park features modern campgrounds, cabins, and a visitor’s center, but anglers know this as the walleye capital of North Dakota. In fact, it hosts a variety of fishing tournaments including the Governor’s Cup Walleye Fishing Derby. While most of the land was historically used for agriculture, sections of native mixed grass prairie still remain. Common native plants found here are little bluestem, blue grama, needle-and-thread, and western wheatgrass, along with purple coneflower, fringed sage, lead plant, and prairie smoke. There’s also an arboretum containing over 50 native and non-native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses has been established near the campgrounds. Two rare animals, the piping plover and the black-tailed prairie dog, can be found within the park.
