It's only 20 minutes from town but far enough to enjoy the peaceful and serene offerings of nature. The property has a 20 x 60' covered picnic area, a large beach suitable for swimming in summer and fall, and it is also a world-class fishing spot. It has unlimited mountain trails and logging roads for ATVs, mountain bikers/hikers and with Class I - IV rapids, is also a fantastic area for whitewater kayaking and rafting. The national kayaking team trains just up from us and Chilliwack River Rafting is very close by. We occasionally host weddings in the meadow and covered picnic area as well. Your QUIET, well-mannered, leashed (at all times) pet is welcome as long as you pick up after them. There is a minimum of 3 nights on long weekends. Children MUST be accompanied by a parent at all times! We are in a very sensitive, natural environment & want it left exactly as you found it so it can be enjoyed by others. We've unfortunately had children cutting down small trees, ripping moss & bark off of trees & damaging playground equipment. For some reason Hipcamp doesn't show my individual sites, so I will list them here. Some say Adults only (a minimum of 19 yrs)due to sharp drop offs to the river and undercut banks that would be unsafe for children. SITES: Site 21. Forager Hill Farm on Hayward Lake

3 sites ¡ Lodging5 acres ¡ Mission, BC
Our 5 acre forested farm backs onto Hayward Lake and has the Stave River at the front of the property. Our farm has ducks, chickens, rabbits, and a collection of cats. There are wild berry bushes throughout the property and the surrounding forest. Lake access is private (people could hike in or canoe up, but normally we have it to ourselves) and the lake itself is a great spot for wildlife watching (beavers, deer, bats, fish, bears, owls, eagles, osprey etc.). The Stave River in the front of the property offers a more sunny spot for swimming and fishing. The Hayward Reservoir Trail circumnavigates the whole lake and the trail entrance is a 5 minute walk from the cabin. Guests can book our cabin and if you have additional bodies, add on our campsite ($30 a night) during the booking process. Both sites include picnic tables and outhouses. We provide fresh spring water and campfire wood can be supplied ($10 a bundle). The cabin is insulated and can be heated with the wood stove so it is suitable for use all year.

Camping near Abbotsford guide

Overview

Hugging the US border, Abbotsford is set in a wide swathe of farmland split by the Fraser River and the Trans-Canada Highway. The Fraser Valley urban centre is a base from which to embark east into the BC interior or west to the coast. Sumas Mountain Regional Park butts up against Abbotsford’s eastern edge with hiking and mountain biking trails (from easier Squidline to the hardcore Knob Gobbler) skirting its slopes. It’s also a happening spot for agritourism, from lavender fields and a meadery to apple orchards and a cidery.

Where to go

Cultus Lake

East along backroads (on the Trans-Canada or Highway 1 south of Chilliwack) is Cultus Lake, long beloved by locals for its placid waters (as a warm alternative to the chillier ocean and alpine lakes) and status as an easy camping getaway just 100 kilometres from Vancouver. Swim, canoe, golf, bike, and explore Cultus Lake Provincial Park into Columbia Valley, where some of the first families in the area settled in the 1890s, or go east into the subalpine playground of Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park.

West Coast

Skip the Trans-Canada (Highway 1) thoroughfare and take the old Fraser Highway west into Langley, the easternmost municipality of Greater Vancouver. From here, continue west on secondary roads to the seaside community of White Rock and Crescent Beach’s sand and scenic boardwalks. A short drive north brings you to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, the jumping-off point for the many islands (from smaller Gulf Islands to the huge Vancouver Island) in the Strait of Georgia.

Across the Border in Washington

The Canada-US border crossing at Sumas, 15 minutes from downtown Abbotsford, is a less-travelled route into Washington and Whatcom County’s wilderness at the foot of imposing Mount Baker, the highest peak in the North Cascades. Hike and bike in summer, ski at Mount Baker in winter, or take a leisurely route west to the Aldergrove crossing, where Aldergrove Regional Park offers wetland scenery before returning to the Canadian side (a longer option within the US continues to the coast and the Peace Arch crossing).

When to go

The Fraser Valley is a year-round destination with mild-but-wet weather from November to February. Higher alpine regions may get snow (with the closest skiing to Abbotsford being across the border on the slopes of Mount Baker), but summer is peak season for camping, especially at lakes, and valley temperatures can be many degrees hotter than at the coast and mountains.

Know before you go

  • Most provincial parks take site reservations in advance (recommended throughout the high season of summer) and give an early priority booking window to BC residents.
  • The Trans-Canada Highway, which runs through Abbotsford and neighbouring municipalities, is the main thoroughfare to points east and west and can become very congested during rush hours on weekdays and holiday weekends.
  • Travelling across the border to the United States can also be very busy during weekends and holidays, requires a valid passport, and is subject to closures (you may need to return via a different crossing than anticipated).

Nearby attractions

  • Immerse yourself in history and nature when camping near the Othello Tunnels. Known for its breathtaking trails through old railway tunnels and surrounding wilderness, the Othello Tunnels camping experience combines adventure, relaxation, and a touch of mystery for a truly unforgettable outdoor getaway.
  • Experience the best of British Columbia's natural beauty while camping near Hayward Lake Recreation Area. This camping adventure blends waterside relaxation, forested hiking trails, and wildlife spotting for a dynamic and refreshing experience.
