The Ninilchik State Recreation Area is the place to be for excellent salmon and halibut fishing. Ninilchik Beach is also a popular beach for digging for razor clams at low tide. And, the clamming beds are right next to a campground. You’ll also find developed campsites at mile 134.5 on the Sterling Highway. This spot sees moose occasionally, and there are tons of lovely wildflowers. It’s hardly your only camping option, though. Ninilchik View is another lovely campground, and it’s situated on a bluff that stands guard over the beach. While you’re here, think about popping by Ninilchik and it’s historical village and Russian Orthodox Church. Oh, and if all of that isn’t enough…two active volcanoes, Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Redoubt, can be clearly seen. Not too shabby!
