Located in the rolling Appalachian hills of Southeast Ohio. This farm has been in our family since 1869 when our relatives settled here from Germany. Originally farmed for cattle and sheep with many orchards over the years our property is now mostly mature forest. Southeast Ohio, including our property is known for its hilly topography and microclimates. Hills range from 400 to 1,100 feet. Nearly 500 acres of land with an additional 200+ acres of Wayne National Forest adjacent to our farm and close proximity to other Wayne areas for outdoor activities. We have nearly 10 miles of available trails for hiking. Many activities can be done at or centered around our property. Such as excellent and challenging road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. We are two miles from the Little Muskingum River. A great river for kayak trips. The Wayne Kinderhook horse and hiking trail is roughly 5 miles from our location. Hike to the Irish Run Natural Land bridge trail also a short drive to the trailhead from our property. Ride your motorcycle up Rt. 26 a great Ohio byway for scenic driving. This is also a great home base for dual sport or adventure bike motorcycle riders to camp while adventuring along gravel roads through Appalachia. If motorcycles aren't your method of entertainment and travel. Bring your horse and ride on several of our trails. From steep ascents to long flat ridge lines, you will have lots of time to immerse yourself with nature while hiking. We're next to a section of the Wayne National Forest and a short drive to other similar Wayne activity sites. If you like to camp, but don't want the busy public park experience then you will enjoy the privacy of our camping location. We are also only about a 20-minute drive to downtown Marietta. Where you can find restaurants, bars, and many other fun activities.

This was an awesome place to camp! Usually I don't see the host much, but this host was very friendly and accommodating. The site was about 0.25 miles from where our car parked and he brought all of our things there for us in his trailor. He even came back later to help us blow up our air mattress. The land itself was so secluded and really quite. There is a spring with fresh drinking water. You can see so many stars at night too!

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp

Wife and I had all we needed at the Nature Camper. Camper has water, hot water, stove, oven, fridge, microwave, and a Solo Firepit on the private deck. Lots of charm inside, more like a tiny house with completely new appliances and birch walls. Best of all you are on 500 private acres. We hiked part of the 10 miles of trails in total privacy. Site also has huge grassy tent area you can expand into with large fire-pit - comes with the camper so no neighbors. Owner’s family goes back to the original log cabin, that is still there off one of the trails. Owner has made his own private preserve, He was interesting, respectful and responsive. Camper pdf had all the details you need. Easy drive to Marietta Ohio River historic areas, shopping, dining, activities, and Wayne NF trails. No cell or WiFi but it comes in as you drive down the road. Unplug and enjoy!

I wish we’d had more time to explore the Appalachian Retreat. It was a lovely and lush piece of land and the little a-frame was very cute and comfortable. I appreciated all of the cool design features of the cabins and outhouse. We only arrived late at night, slept well and had to head out in the morning.

Really cute A-Frame with everything you need to enjoy a time away. The property has many trails to explore and plenty to see without ever getting in your car. The cabin was comfortable and equipped with many nice add ons, aside from the occasional expected creepy crawler. Nice small generator that kept all of our devices charged, and a nice bathroom and comfy bed. Definitely recommend!

What a killer spot. Lizzies RV Retreat is peaceful, remote, and just about perfect. The dark skies are unreal for stargazing, and the camping area has everything you could want. Fire pit, composting toilet, elevated deck for tent campers, cooking tools, and even a 50 amp hookup for those of us who like a little juice in the trailer. The property backs right up to Wayne National Forest with trails leading straight out from camp. There are vernal pools to check out and plenty of wildlife. Coyotes howling, owls hooting, and total quiet otherwise. You’re only about 15 minutes from Marietta too, where you can grab a drink and some great food at Black Diamond Distillery or hit up the local shops downtown. Jay was an awesome host. Super friendly, stopped by to chat, shared some cool history about the land, and showed us his on site camper that he remodeled from top to bottom. It looks fantastic and is available to rent. Jay rides too, so for the motorcyclists out there, this spot is perfect for motorcycle camping. Routes like 26 and 800 are nearby and make for some great rides. Highly recommend. Can’t wait to go back.

Really great little site. Lots of fun touches that we don’t see often at Hipcamp spots- a nice campfire spot, a picnic table, paw paws (yum!), privacy… and the toilet!! So clean and didn’t smell like anything but the wood the outhouse was built with. That was amazing, honestly. We used a long extension cord and plugged our camper in at the back part of the site, off the road. Worked beautifully. Plenty of sun for our solar panels for boondocking, if we had brought them. Will definitely star this spot!

3 nights at Appalachian Retreat Camp

My brother and I rented the A- and R-frame cabins and stayed three nights. What an amazing camp! Calm and serene, brimming with wildlife (butterflies, birds including woodpeckers, hawks, and owls, deer, possum, and more). Great, well stocked firepit. The A- frame is definitely more rustic than the R-, so if you want to feel more connected to nature, the A-frame is for you. The hosts were communicative and friendly and they've clearly put a lot of thought into their camp. Lots to do in the area if you're into fishing (we caught a 15" bass at the Devola dam) or hiking. The creek was dry when we went, so we got our water from the house nearby. Both my brother and I would definitely want to go back, maybe at a time when the creek would more likely be running since it runs right by the cabins and would be incredibly relaxing to listen to. My brother at the end of the trip, "I give that camp ten out of five stars." :)

Great Hosts, Great Communication! Stayed for 2 nights and the property is very clean and well kept. Plenty of fish in pond, Large Mouth Bass, Striped Perch, and Blue Gills. No cell service so you can unwind. Had a peddle boat for use, be we didn’t try it. Heard Coyotes in the evening. It was a wonderful weekend. Highly Recommend.

My Lovely companion and I were touring the area on motorcycles. This gem was perfectly, centrally located for our excursions. The weather was exceedingly hot when we arrived and started down the shaded pathway into the cool glen. This place is dripping with charm and teaming with all sorts of wildlife! It’s very well provisioned and equally romantic. Very private. We were unable to meet in person with “J” unfortunately, given our itinerary, but our host was still completely available and accommodating via text. We are already planning another trip to the area with every intent to stay here again but with a small group. Thank you!

J.’s land is beautiful! He was very friendly and helpful as well. The cabin was gorgeous and so peaceful and quiet. We stayed overnight for a group motorcycle ride close by. We will definitely be back and tell friends to check it out.

What a great host and really couldn’t have asked for a better camping experience!If you want that real camping feeling(from no service, to hearing the coyotes at night and the closest stores for anything are about 15 minutes away) this is the place! Truly would recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice break from the real world! Thank you for this experience!

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp

We stayed at J.’s “Cabin in the Woods” and it was awesome! It’s nestled deep among the trees and really makes you feel like you’re in the woods. It’s so tucked away that it’s hard to see from the lower cabin so make sure you read those instructions carefully! The cabin itself was very clean and comfy! There was a ton of handy extras inside like a lantern, a camping chair, a lighter, a hammock, and even some bug spray! The porch had a nice spot for setting up our camp stove and the area around the solo stove was great for sitting around the fire and hanging out for the evening. J was super helpful and responsive! Can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a super isolated stay in the woods! Oh and the bugs weren’t too bad and it rained pretty hard most of the night and we stayed nice and dry in the cabin. Oh and there were two overhead LED bulbs that let us stay up chatting even when the rain drove us inside. Can’t recommend it enough!

Weekend Trip to Appalachian Retreat Camp

This location was awesome! Quiet and beautiful, with trails that connect to the nearby forest, and no cell service! Perfect for disconnecting for a few days. Marietta, Ohio is just a few minutes away with shopping, dining, fishing, kayaking - so much to do and see there. J.R.'s property is huge, with lots of hiking opportunities. The fire pit has a bench seat that was perfect for cozying up when we got back to camp. Also, it was nice to have the composting toilet - it kept us from having to find a dump station on our way home to empty the RV tanks. We saw deer, turkey, owls, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and SO MANY FIREFLIES!! The meadows matched the evening sky - it was awesome. J.R.'s father met us as we arrived and, let me tell you, that man is a gem! Through our conversation, we realized that he (at one time) not only worked in my hometown, but in Shannon's hometown, too! It's a small world. The amenities were just as described in the listing, with a steady power supply, picnic table, BBQ grill, fire pit, composting toilet, and a nice platform for tent camping. J.R. even gave us great recommendations for day trips (I even caught some fish!). Overall, a great escape from the rat race. We'll be back!
