2 nights at Possum Holler Camp- New River Gorge

We thoroughly enjoyed escaping the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. We were thrilled to bring our two large dogs with us and enjoy the creek and the beauty of WV nature. We had several trees to choose from to hang our hammocks and plenty of room to put up our tents. You can hear the creek water trickling as you relax near the fire pit. There was a tote with items that were helpful and a grill as well as bundles of firewood that could easily be purchased. Check in and out was amazing as we did not have to meet with anyone. We were able to enjoy our short stay without worrying about neighboring campers which was the experience we were needing and hoping for.

3 nights at 5 Leaf Farm

Amazingly beautiful location! The waterfall and cove area was a short hike away from the main house, and is totally worth going to even when it's just a trickle. There are a lot of carpenter bees and wasps living in the treehouse, but no one got stung and we coexisted well. Just something to think about if you are afraid of flying, stinging insects. The shower in the bathhouse is great, and the camping toilet worked well enough. Rob is a great host! He was communicative and always answered our questions quickly. The farm dogs are friendly and adorable, but will rush your car to greet you which might be overwhelming to some dogs. Totally would recommend staying here overall.

3 nights at Possum Holler Camp- New River Gorge

Things we loved: - Firewood onsite - Easy access to creek - Rhododendrons in bloom everywhere - Shaded with dappled light - 5 min drive to New River Gorge Visitor Center - Tarp covering over picnic table - Each tent site was tucked away between the trees with pathways in between. Enough privacy between tents but still felt close enough to others. Things to be aware of: - Road to site is very steep. Everyone who joined in sedans parked at the top of the hill. People with SUVs and trucks parked at the campsite. - Road to get to site is a little narrow. Just be careful and be prepared to pull off if need be! It’s about 1.5 cars wide.

1 night at Possum Holler Camp- New River Gorge

Best site of our 5 night trip... It's secluded, right on a beautiful river, plenty of test spots, although we used a Roof Top Tent in the stone parking area - beautiful trees... and it rained some so we really appreciated the tarp shelter set up over the picnic table. We will definitely return. We didn't use the firewood however, it was nice to have it there in case, with a great fire pit.

We just wrapped up a magical weekend at Camp Comatose and I can’t say enough about the hospitality and vibe of this place! From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed like family. The grounds are peaceful, well-kept, and full of character—just the kind of place that makes you want to unplug and actually relax. One of the absolute highlights? The live music. The band was incredible—great energy, great sound, and the kind of performance that pulls everyone together around the fire. It felt like a little music festival tucked into the woods. And let’s talk food—plenty of delicious options that kept everyone full and happy. Whether you’re a camper, glamper, or just stopping by for an event, you’ll find something to love. Huge thanks to Mike and Cori for making our stay so memorable. We’ll definitely be back. ✨ 10/10 recommend—Camp Comatose isn’t just a place to camp... it’s a whole experience. 💫

The sight was layed out very well and the neighbors were always honking and waving when they would pass I as a way of greeting. Definitely recommend trying out this one

Great campsite near everything at Great River Gorge! Campsite is clean, has a picnic table and tarp. Very convenient if you're spending a few days in the area hiking or rafting. We look forward to going back!

1 night at Camp Comatose

Camp Comatose was an excellent location to catch the full moon while sleeping in my hammock. Rory 🐶 & I enjoyed the stay and Mike was a great host.

4 nights at Possum Holler Camp- New River Gorge

This place is absolutely amazing! It was exactly what our family was looking for. It’s near town but secluded and peaceful. The creek was a blast for the kids. So many places to set up tents or hammocks! The porta potty was clean. We bought firewood from the rack there and that was SO very convenient! The drive is steep but well graveled. All or 4 wheel drive needed. Fireflies were out. The raccoons are thieves so lock it up. All in all this was a wonderful camp to call home for a few days.

3 nights at Meadowcroft Riverfront Cabin

Great spot on the Meadow River. It was myself, my mom and kids. The kids slept outside in tents and me, mom and my niece slept inside the little cabin. There was plenty of room for us in there and the added bonus of AC was really nice! Fridge and microwave came in handy too. We were prepared for roughing it but were happy to not really have to do it all the way! Porta potty was very clean and not that bad.

1 night at Mountain Magnolia Forest Farm

Great location near the gorge. Near the wall trail with good views. We enjoyed the site little hikes for our 3 and 5 yo kiddos. Natural spring pool looked enticing for a dip.

SUCH an awesome stay. Susan and James are just the best. Lovely location and amenities. The wool class was so much fun for my gf!! But please be aware, SO many bugs up by the creek!

We loved, loved, loved this private camp site! It was close to everything we wanted to do, but felt so secluded. We had one overland tent vehicle (4x4), and one truck tent (4x2) and the 2 wheel drive truck had no problem getting up and down the gravel hill. It was a moist trip while we were there, but there were few bugs, and a great peace in the air. We loved it! We visited Freefolk Brewing and Pies & Pints - We very much recommend after long hikes!

Weekend Trip to Tawney Farm's Wild & Woolly

We had the most peaceful stay here. The campsite is big and away from all the other sites. The port a John’s are very clean. The hosts are so friendly and fun to chat with. I love how off the grid the place is too. Was nice to be forced to be off our phones and just enjoy nature. While it was off the grid, it was still just a relatively short drive to state parks and several hiking trails. A definite place to stay for primitive camping.

Approx 5min walk across edmond-lansing rd to short creek/head house trail. Hiking to views of the gorge, down to the river and plenty of climbing. Endless wall is 2 min drive down the road, some of the best hiking and climbing in the gorge! Beauty Mountain overlook is 1.5 miles away. Campsite is off of a private neighborhood road. GPS will NOT take you to our place. It will send you to the neighbors, so please follow written directions from host. We don’t want to burden our neighbors. Thank you! There is a small fire ring, bring dry wood and make sure to put your fire completely out anytime you wont be attending it, this is the woods. ALL are welcome. Meadowcroft is a semi-primitive cabin on the bank of the beautiful Meadow River. Swim, fish, and hang out with the river otters. It's like camping, but with a roof over your head, WiFi, A/C in the summer, and a cozy wood stove in the winter. A large lawn with fire ring fronts a long section of lazy river (perfect for paddleboarding, tubing, canoeing, etc.), with worldclass whitewater beginning about a mile downstream. Premium bouldering is two miles away, Meadow sport climbing 10 min., Summersville Lake 15 min., and all other NRG-area climbing and National Park within a 25-min radius. Like Camping, But a Cabin The cabin is a lovingly souped-up Amish-built shed. Like camping, you bring your own sleeping gear and most of your cooking gear, and you pack everything out and tidy up after yourself. ***Please take all trash with you when you leave. THERE IS A $100 CHARGE FOR TRASH LEFT BEHIND*** This is a self-cleaning cabin, which means *you clean up after yourself to prepare for the next guest* (not that it cleans itself, unfortunately). This area was known by the Native Americans as "Pocatalico" (land of the fat doe), and first settled by Europeans around 1890. The property itself was first settled by a man named Mayford Jones, who set the first stones here around 1910. A Jenny Lynn style farmhouse was built and the property was known as one of the best developed farms in the area. Today, the forest has returned to what was once pasture land on the majority of the 100 acre plot, and a small but intensive sustainable forest farm has been taking shape since 2013 under the current host and occupant, who prefers the term "steward" rather than "owner".

The Tawney Farm is a small-scale wool sheep farm adjacent to the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area and just a short drive to the New River Gorge National Park. Our farm lies nestled in between two beautiful mountains, one of them named Panther Mountain, in the Gauley River gorge. Here we raise Merino and Jacob sheep for wool where we process the fiber and either sell it to other fiber artists or felt it into crafts and hats ourselves. Our farm is also home to a miniature horse, chickens, and of course dogs and cats. In addition to the NRG and Summersville Lake and Dam, also close by are Carnifex Ferry Battleground State Park where you can see where a crucial civil war battle took place, as well as Babcock State Park with its iconic grist mill and waterfall. Our region has it all! But why stay in an overcrowded, commercial campground? Leave the beaten path and enjoy peaceful and private, safe and secure primitive camping on our mountain farm. We provide 7 sites on our farm for every camping style, from dry RV to tent, each with a table, fire pit and grill. You’re also welcome to camp almost anywhere on the property to find your perfect spot. A lightly traveled public dirt road runs through our property. While an SUV or 4x4 is recommended, regular cars can access the site, and we have parking for standard vehicles. Please check with us in advance if you plan to bring an RV. Our farm is a great destination for overland camping—perfect for getting your truck a little dirty! We are cautiously dog-friendly. Our farm dogs patrol the property to protect our free-roaming animals, so visiting dogs must be well-behaved, leashed, and comfortable around other animals. If you're unsure about compatibility, please reach out for advice. Our dogs will come to your camp to "check you out". If your dog has a problem with other dogs that are new to them you must let us know so we can control our dogs. We have had people come with problem dogs and not tell us so, we are asking for a $1 extra that we now require as a pet fee. While you're here, visit our local businesses in Gassaway. At Bigfoot Braxxie's Bikes, you can rent a bike and explore the 40-mile Elk River Rail Trail. Trailhead Farm Meats & More offers our farm-raised, all-natural meats and other local products. Property was owned by my great grandfather , He lost 150 acres in the early 1900's due to a bad debt from neighboring landowner. Was so happy to be able to repurchase the 150 acres back in 2016,now own the original land tract and added more. 250 acres in total. Portions were strip mined around 1978-1982 creating some flat fields and access to all property. I might add that strip mining if done properly can and does enhance the property. Ponds were built to catch runoff and several new animal species moved in waterfowl ,muskrats, and beavers. The beavers have constructed large dams on property further adding to the beauty. Have seen several bald eagles on and around the property.

Possum Holler Camp- New River Gorge

Camping at Possum Holler Camp will provide you the perfect blend of solitude and recreation access. You will truly be in the heart of the New River National Park, yet still feel secluded in the beautiful woods without neighbors. You will have private access to beautiful and idyllic Mill Creek, which has many beautiful emerald pools and is even seasonally stocked with rainbow trout! Within a mile you can access the New River Gorge Bridge and the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, and you are equally close to the park's world class climbing, rafting, hiking, ziplining, and mountain biking at the New River Gorge National Park and surrounding areas. Your group will have the entire camp to yourselves, so there's no need to worry about noisy neighbors. Our driveway has recently been revamped to include more flat parking and a less steep access route! While these improvements are great, we still caution our guests to avoid bringing large trailers and to use 4WD if available in an attempt to minimize rutting in the future. Seasoned hardwood firewood is available on site for $6/bundle. You are allowed to bring your own firewood, but only if you source your firewood locally because invasive pest species can travel in firewood. Possum Holler Camp is a Leave No Trace campsite, guests are asked to pack out anything they bring in and leave the area undisturbed. This includes damaging vegetation, creating new fire rings, or altering the natural area in any way. Also, please do not camp in the meadow area and only use the cleared out areas in the woods surrounding the parking and picnic/fire area for pitching tents. If you stay below the high water line, then feel free to move as far up or downstream Mill Creek as you like. The creek is indescribably beautiful in both directions! But please keep in mind that there is private property once you are above the high water line, please do not trespass on our neighbor's property.
