The recreational draw to this area is hard to beat in VA, and this property has it all for an amazing outdoor weekend! The ranch comprises 40 acres of lowland acreage designated for the camp, including a 5-acre lake.
The Cedar Grove sites 1, 2, and 3 are along the banks of Passage Creek located within a sparse, groomed Cedar grove. They are all a short walk (or drive) to the lake and beach amenities. Each site has varying access to the creek, so check out the site details. These sites are extra large and can accommodate multiple family groups, as well as, travel trailers of all sizes up to off-road motorcoaches in site 1. There are no hookups, so just boondocking. Pack it in, Pack it out. Generators are allowed but please be aware of the other sites and direct the noise away.
The Lakeside Mountain Stream site is very secluded, nestled between the mountains and the lake. It overlooks our 5-acre lake with mountain views in the background. It's on the opposite side of the lake from the Cedar Sites. This site has its own dock and is just a short walk down a mowed trail to a beautiful section of Passage Creek. An additional seasonal mountain stream can cascade behind the site and run under it to feed the lake when the conditions are right. It's a delicate site, so the accommodations and group size is strictly limited.

It is operated by the Menare Foundation through a long term lease agreement with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Several of us who work for the non-profit live in the Button Farm house and share the land with our pigs, geese, chickens and lots of wildlife.

We’ve been back to this site probably 10 times now. Simply put, we love it. The prepaid firewood delivery option made it easy, and then being able to purchase more wood at the site ensured we were warm throughout a chilly weekend. The stars were out in full force yet again, a treat for us city dwellers. Looking forward to our next time back.

The sites were large and had a huge fire ring and little grill. The pond is beautiful in the mornings and there's tons of free equipment if you feel like a paddle. The owner/caretaker is lovely and gives great local advice and the porta-potties were very clean. The little creek running around the property brings lots of ambiance and the occasional deer! No water options here but the national campground north of the property has a well/pump.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been here over the last few years. This is our go-to campsite. The location on the lake is simply the best. This time a new friend who’s an avid camper joined. He said while looking across the mirror-effect on the lake, “I can see why you keep on coming back here.” There’s something special about this place. On this particular trip, the fall colors were fully out and the stars were lighting up the night sky. Can’t wait to come back.

The lakeside camp site is incredible! we were three families camping there with little ones running around and having a blast. There was plenty of firewood available for camp circles, canoe and kayak rides, and some great local hikes. we can’t wait to come back! This will hopefully become one of go-to spots for family camping weekends!

Our second time staying at Pastimes. This time at a different site. We had a great time. Clean, fish food that the kiddos enjoyed dropping at the dock. Lots of different piers to fish from! Sites are big and comfortable with a table and fire ring.

Wonderful site, not crowded, great proximity to Shenandoah hiking trails and on site boating and fishing with the kids was a blast. Portability potties made it an easier camping experience with the little ones. Absolutely a 10/10 site for families with elementary age kids.

Such a lovely space! We were lucky with warm weather for early October so having the little pond was nice! We stayed at Cedar Grove 1 which is the closest to the road but also the biggest. Lots of room to spread out if you are with a lot of people. This site has a picnic table, regular sized fire ring, a larger one for bigger groups, and a grill. We also added on the firewood bundle and it was delivered to our site. I was also able to hang my hammock by a cluster of trees.
There are plenty of trees for shade and even though you can see the other campsites, you’re still quite far from them.
The porta potties were well stocked and about as clean as they can get. Unfortunately we think the kids from the other sites stood on the seats so they were muddy.
With a quick walk down to the pond, you get amazing views. Kayaks are set out and there are plenty more by the shed, along with paddles, life vest in many sizes, and fish food.
At night we had nice clear skies for stargazing. I was able to capture some astrophotography!
We are big fans of this campsite and can’t wait to return!

Beautiful quiet campspot along a meadow edge next to a lush hardwood forest. Host was very very accomodating. He recommended - and we took him up on it- the short hike to Eagle Rock, down to the Horsepen Run Creek, and on to an isolated beach of the Rappahannock River. Only 15 minutes from Fredericksburg, but feels like hours away.

I almost never leave reviews, but this place deserves one. From the photos, it was clear the Lakeside Mountain Stream site was beautiful—but they don’t come close to capturing how breathtaking it really is. It’s truly a slice of heaven.
Being able to park and set up a tent just feet from the lake was peaceful and serene. I brought my dog here for one last weekend together before she crossed the rainbow bridge, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place. The atmosphere, the setting, and the quiet beauty made it unforgettable. From the lakeside site, there’s even a small, picturesque trail leading to Passage Creek, where you can wade through the water or let your dogs splash around.
I also explored the more traditional campsites, which were spacious, well-kept, and equally beautiful. The entire property was immaculate and clearly maintained with care. Eric was incredibly responsive and helpful, and if you’re fortunate, you may get to meet his father, Chuck—a kind, welcoming man who built this hidden gem with his own hands. Remarkable.
If you’re considering it, just book the Lakeside Mountain Stream site—you won’t regret it. It’s a place you’ll carry with you long after you leave.

This was a fabulous hipcamp. Every about it was memorable. Site 1 was huge with a enormous fire pit as well as a camp grill and a smaller firepot. Also has access to a creek. When the sun came out we plopped our chairs in the creek with a fever and enjoyed the babbling of the water and beautiful scenery. The complimentary boats and Kyacks, life jackets and even fish food was great! We fly fished off the docks and caught several good size fish. We will absolutely be coming back. Great little shops and places to eat not far also. Hiking and lots of histoor the area
