The Goat Pens is amazing. Favorite place to go in West Texas. We go here just to spend time there. Honestly don’t feel the need to go into the Parks. This place is close enough to the Ghost Town, but feels secluded. Amenities are awesome. Can’t wait to go back.

Jeff was super nice, we talked for about an hour on how he became a rancher and our travels. The spot is down a pretty roughshod country road, but the area is beautiful. The showers worked well. Be wary, it can get windy out there!

Weekend Trip to Goat Pens, Cigar Springs Ranch

Jeff, the camp host, was very responsive to questions. We found the camping area to be as advertised. One drawback is that the tent sites are exposed to wind and we had high winds both nights that were strong enough to break some tent poles. Adding some windbreaks would be a great addition to the campground. If our group plans another trip to Big Bend we will definitely look at booking here first.

First off Jeff is one hell of a human and outside of that this property is insanely beautiful! There is so much to explore. If you decide that you need a bite to eat there are a few restaurants in town that are pretty good. Only about 10 min away. We got caught in a storm out there but didn’t let that bring us down. If you have the space for it account for an extra tent to be on the safe side. Our tent ended up getting destroyed in the crazy wind and rain but our friend ended having another tent for us to use.

This was a great spot to camp for traveling into big bend for hiking each day - roughly a 30min drive in. Clean area, showers, and bathrooms were a plus! The camp sites are far enough apart to make it feel like we were still in our own space with zero noise issues. There weren't any goats but there is a SUPER sweet pup named Pepper that visited us.

Camp sites were far enough away from other campers to enjoy the camping experience. There were various different camp sites with different landscapes to suit your camping style including rocky walk in camp sites that were beautiful! The restrooms were better than expected and were always clean. Jeff was super nice and helpful as well making the whole experience easy.

We had a great experience at The Goat Pens. Jeff and his puppy Pepper came by to check on everyone in the evenings. He's very friendly and helpful. A few tips for the best experience: First, talk to Jeff. He made a plan with us to let our daughter play with his baby goats and for us to see fossil bones in the hills. Second, get in early to get an optimal site. Sites are more or less private and exposed to the elements and other campers. Third, the bathrooms are very nice for chemical toilets. All were well-stocked with TP & hand sanitizer, they have lights, and those closest to the camping area have sinks, soap, & running water. There are two bathroom setups, both with 2 spaces. Fourth, the showers are hot if you run them for a little bit. Otherwise, they can be frigid. The shower on the left has better pressure. Fifth, and the only negative (nothing against Jeff or The Goat Pens specifically) - this is Terlingua - a huge dust field. Our third and last night, we came back after dark just as a serious sandstorm was hitting (that was NOT in the weather report). Our tent quickly filled with a thick layer of fine dust blown into it UNDER the tent fly, and our short dome tent was about to snap poles or rip. With the direction of the wind, no tent in the campground was sheltered, and even parking our SUV in front did little to help. We had to bail and try to find a hotel. Jeff has a great spot but recognize that camping in the desert may be an adventure!
