Created by legendary automotive engineer, Carroll Shelby, Terlingua Ranch is nearly 200,000 acres nestled between 1.1 millions acres of wilderness in Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Star Haven's expansive vistas afford views of the state park 9 miles southwest, the national park 20 miles southeast and Nine Point Mesa 6 miles due east. The broad horizons mean unobstructed views for star-gazing and the remote location means the least light pollution you'll find anywhere. After 45 years of leading groups hiking, climbing, rafting, and canoeing the Big Bend, we are glad to share our basecamp with you.

Camping under the dark skies
The site was great! It was beautiful and so peaceful. We got great pictures of sun rise and spectacular views of sunsets. I believe it was a perfect place to stay outside of Big Bend! Thank you so much for sharing your place with us!!

No outhouse, flat tire, and shale
The host was helpful with dirrections. The site was far out of Terlingua. Over 10 miles off the highway on rough gravel roads. The road was rough enough to puncture one of my tires. The campsite no longer has an outhouse. The site was on top of a shale rock plateau. Metal tent pegs bend and plastic ones can not penetrate the shale. If you can get a tent peg pounded in then they do not have good holding strength against the winds. We were not able to use a tent for our two nights there. Star watching was good for the first night but it was too cloudy the second night. We also had a noisy ranch truck driving back and forth by the camp at 2am. I am not able to recomend this site and will not be returning. An outhouse would be the most needed inprovement. I would also suggest rebar tie anchors to provide campers with secure tie points.

Remote, quiet, beautiful
This was a beautiful place and is REEEAALLY out there! If you're looking for remote and rural, this is for you. Perfect for stargazing!
A word to the wise, plan to arrive well before dark because the directions are precise and tricky even in the day. Also, make sure to fuel up in the closest town because there are few if any gas stations nearby.

Star Haven was an amazing experience. We had the entire place to ourselves. No one rented the other campsite(we will rent both camp sites next time). It was like being on another planet .No human noise at all. Watched the sun come up over one mesa and set on the other. SAme with the moon. Amazing views all around. We are going back soon

Star haven is truly an amazing campsite. Very remote and very private. I really enjoyed every part about it. It may have been difficult to find initially but John texted very specific driving instructions and called before our stay to see if I had any questions which was very helpful.

Our stay was AMAZING!!! Absolutely gorgeous views from this place and not too hard to locate! So much room to explore we almost didn’t want to leave this place to go into Big Bend! Gas station is only about 15 or so miles down the road which was super convenient as well! Thank you John!

Great times; could be better
The campsite is situated in a really pretty plateau although it’s relatively far to big bend nation park it was still enjoyable just by itself.
Just some thoughts:
•fire pit might be one of the best features of this site.
• there was used toilet paper scattered all over the campsite
• the directions were a bit confusing to follow at night (suggestion to make a google maps list with pins at every turn to reduce confusion I made one and I would gladly share it with anyone who needs it ) if you plan on visiting plan on being at campsite before sunset.
• I thought every site had its own picnic table but both sites (1 & 2g share the table and the outhouse.

Would be excellent, but....
The secluded area was nice. The view of stars at night was excellent. There was a picnic table, fire ring, and an outhouse (crude, but much better than nothing). However, there were a couple of issues. The first was that the directions were off. Everything was good until the last few hundred yards. The last instruction should be turn left instead of turn right. The second issue is there was toilet paper spread out over a lot of the campsite. It came from the outhouse somehow. There needs to instructions to people that they need to bag their toilet paper when using the outhouse.

Panoramic views
Y’all this was out there! But that was the best part! Totally off the grid and panoramic views. Great place to truly get away. Host was very knowledgeable about the area which made getting there as much fun as staying there! If you want to camp on top of the world this place is for you! Thanks John for sharing this magical spot!

Very remote great host
John was an AMAZING host. This place was remote and a bit hard to find. It would be easy in the day time. John is friendly and charismatic and all around a nice guy. The site is in a rough spot have gas and a working car.

Perfect spot
Amazing spot. Truly in the middle of nowhere and definitely follow the directions the host texts you vs the ones on the site. Stars were amazing and we found a ton of fossils on a walk down the road in the morning.
