A very quiet, private amd well equipped HipCamp that is far enough from “civilization” to be properly restful, and close enough to Fredericksburg (14 miles) to make it a great base to explore the wonderful Hill Country. We would definitely return.

What a beautiful experience! The pots are so unique and I loved opening up the “ windows” to the lake view. All the essentials were provided for and my husband and I were very comfortable for our anniversary Stay. The only downside is that there are many burs outside in the grass. We brought our Chihuahua and he kept stepping on them and his paw started bleeding from one. We had to either carry him around or walk him on the paved road. It wasn’t a huge deal. We adapted. But if you’re wanting to walk the trails, just prepare for that.

We had a great time camping here. We were the only people on the entire property, so we had our run of the place. We actually ended up picking site #1 instead of #3. (The photo is of site #1).
The property is big enough that even if all 6 sites were fully rented out, you would have complete privacy in whichever site you use. There's a bathroom & shower on the property which was nice & clean.
It's a dirt road to sites 2-6, and I think for sites 4-6 you may be better off with a higher clearance vehicle and/or 4WD. You might be OK without it, but I'd say it's borderline through one little spot after site 3 where you cross a very small creek then drive up a hill.
Overall this is a great property and I highly recommend it.

Don’s place was serene. Lots of privacy, nice designated tent spots that felt very taken care of, while still keeping a sense of camping out in the natural space of that area. All the amenities you need and communicative as well.

Communication was great, they had no problem with us arriving late. It was dark but was easy to find our spot. The park is pretty and quiet, one would never know it’s just right off the road. Hooking up was easy. In the morning I took a short walk to the river to take photos. Saw birds, mist coming off the water in the sunlight, so beautiful! I would definitely recommend this park.

Had a great short tent camping trip at Downhorn Ranch! The sites were nice and private, really appreciated having a bathroom complete with shower, and observing the curious Longhorns made for extra entertainment. The host was quick to respond with any questions we had and we would absolutely come back for more nights under the stars.

This was an incredible experience after an intense drive for 5 hours. We really enjoyed the stay the front desk was really friendly and helpful and the camps were just super spacious and really well built with a nice view..!
I would for sure come back again.

Great ranch in the hill country! We tent camped and enjoyed the secluded feel. Beautiful property and nice bath house. Enjoyed hearing all the animals around and seeing the longhorn. Would stay here again!

Very nice park. Site 29 had a water view of the lake. Beautiful grotto-like pool area with hot tub. Excellent infrastructure, appropriate RV voltage at post, good water pressure, good WiFi. Lounge area next to office with TV, games, coffee service, and microwave. Office staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. They also have a rally hall with kitchen available for RV rallies. Cabin rentals also available. Boat ramp and kayak rentals are also available. Located literally next to Buchanan Dam on the north end. This was formerly Big Chief RV Park for years, now under new ownership. Highly recommended.

This was a great spot to stay! Nice to be in some nature and see some stars! The bathroom was a much appreciated addition!
We can't wait to visit again soon! The longhorns were so much fun to see. You can see where the ranch gets its name! Definitely one of our top hipcamp spots!

Our family of 4 loved our time in the tiny home at SKYE Hill Country Resort. The cabin was furnished with full size kitchen appliances which made it easy to cook. The shower was large and we had plenty of hot water. The beds were comfortable, too. We enjoyed sitting outside on the back porch drinking coffee (also supplied in the tiny home) in the Adirondack chairs looking at the pond. This resort is 16 miles outside of Fredericksburg which made it wonderful to get away from the crowds. We enjoyed our time in the pool and playing pickle ball.
