We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there. Glamping at the Chapel

Secluded 48 acres in Murphy (about 16 minutes to downtown). Near: John C. Campbell Folk School (about 12 minutes away); Nantahala River (about 35 minutes away). Friendly dog and cat (they live at my house, but may come to the chapel for a visit). Roam the property and swim in the spring fed pond. If you are a camper or want to try "camping," then you will love "glamping" ("glamorous camping") at the chapel! Read more about "glamping" and the chapel's features below. The space My vision is that my property (which I've named "Kingdom Come") would be a place of rest, retreat, and enjoyment for others. I am going to build a few cabins for lodging, but my first major project was building a chapel, so that it would be the centerpiece and heartbeat: a place for reflection, meditation, and prayer. I built the chapel myself (with my own hands, and the hands of a couple of friends). As I work on building the cabins, I have decided to use the chapel as a glamping site (better than using it as a "divine" storage building!). My mother was an artist and when she died I ended up with a lot of her artwork. Some of her paintings now fill the chapel. They also fill the space, I hope, with her grace and love and creativity. The chapel features beautiful timber frame construction. As to "glamping" . . . there is no running water/plumbing, but you'll have all the fresh water you need for showers, drinking, etc. Limited electricity for running the kitchen appliances. No AC, of course, but the fan will keep it comfortable in warm weather. As to cold weather, the chapel has an electric heater that keeps it fairly comfortable in cold weather: not blazing hot, but comfortable, unless it gets VERY cold; then, the heater just takes off some of the chill. Zinus Ultima Comfort Memory Foam 6 Inch mattresses are very comfortable! Using the outdoor solar/camp shower is wonderful. The privy is clean and well-ventilated. Appliances: fan; toaster oven; microwave oven; coffee maker; and, small micro-fridge. Lighting is provided by four rechargeable lanterns. Screens on the windows and door to keep the bugs at bay. Outdoor deck features comfortable Adirondack chairs, a Weber charcoal grill, and a fire pit for campfires. I'll provide you with wood (on a donation basis . . . pay what you like) campfires. Matches and paper provided, too, to help get the fire started. The play area offers opportunities limited only by your imagination. Sunbathing? Stargazing? Badminton and Bocce balls provided if you want to play! We now have 4 Nigerian goats, 4 Great Pyrenees and 1 little rescue mixed puppy. We are so blessed and wanted to give back. Weekend Trip to Raven Ridge
This place was the perfect weekend retreat. The place felt peaceful and silent—perfect for disconnecting and recharging. There’s a hill right next to the house where you can catch an amazing sunrise and sunset—the view of the Appalachian Mountains turning purple with the sunset light was beautiful. Mornings on the porch with a cup of coffee were my favorite—fresh air, a ton of birds singing, and total calm. At night, the sky was full of stars, perfect for stargazing. The house is really cozy and gives you that feeling of getting back to the basics and simple things of life. The Turkish oven was a fun and different experience for us, and the host, James, along with the people in the community, were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Would definitely come back!

We loved our stay in the tiny house! Super comfy bed, very convenient to have a kitchen w/ sink and fridge inside, and bathroom attached. Short walk to the showers, microwave area, etc. We stayed on a chilly March weekend and were kept warm with the provided space heater. Easy ~45 min drive to the sugarlands visitor center at the national park. Lynne was very communicative and kind - thanks for a wonderful stay!

Great spot right on the river! We had a great time at At the Ridge Camp- Riverside Escapes. We are a family of 5 & stayed in cabin #2. It is a rustic camping cabin but was clean, spacious enough for all of us to sleep comfortably & had electricity. The showers were HOT & Tom made sure we had everything needed. They are still rebuilding from Helene but are definitely up & ready for campers! We will definitely be back.

This was such a cool spot! The cow was so nice and came up to greet us as soon as we arrived. The cabin is very cozy and has everything you need to cook a meal, including a small electric stovetop (although we ended up cooking with our skillet over the fire). The bed upstairs is incredibly comfortable and we got some of the best sleep we've had in a while. The weather was perfect when we were there, so we didn't need them, but there is a large space heater and window a/c unit if you're cold/hot. Beautiful property nestled in the hills, a really nice drive through winding mountain roads, and great scenery all around. Would love to come back sometime!

We stayed at Hilltop Cabin as our first stop on a week long road trip from Baltimore to Austin. It was so great to stay somewhere peaceful and beautiful after being in the car all day, and our pup could play and stretch her legs! We were even able to duck into Asheville for dinner when we arrived and for breakfast the next morning as we had never been! The bed was super comfy and the cabin had everything we needed to relax before getting back on the road. Our hosts were friendly and i’m sure would have been accommodating should we have needed anything, but the cabin was perfect and we were totally set as is! Our dog and the cow, Kashi, also started a beautiful friendship. Would love to come back one day :-) Thank you!

Weekend Trip to Raven Ridge
My wife and I had a great Valentine’s weekend away at the Hilltop Cabin. Beautiful views in multiple directions, right from the front porch. Mastering the wood burning stove for cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner made the experience even more enjoyable. You can always use the hot plate if you prefer… We had rain both days so we spent the whole weekend in the cabin. Felt like home. Comfortable recliner space to read a book upstairs or just sit and listen to the birds. James even went in before us and turned on the heater to warm the place for us. Never had a cold moment. Great spot! Couldn’t recommend more.

We loved our stay at Raven Ridge!! The cabin was charming and cozy. The Turkish wood stove is such a lovely feature! There is an outhouse steps behind the cabin…it was very clean and well kept. Raven Ridge is adjacent to a wellness retreat which looked very intriguing and we plan to check out on another visit. The location was great….we drove back and forth from mars hill a few times for snow tubing and hiking the Appalachian Trail at Sam’s Gap…it was maybe 20 minutes from the cabin to exit 3, then we made it to Asheville from the cabin in about 30 minutes. The most surprising thing was how warm the cabin was considering it was in the 20s & 30s during our stay!! All from a space heater downstairs!! It shows how well the cabin is built as we have stayed in glamping cabins that are drafty and impossible to keep warm. The hosts were very responsive to messages and checked on us to make sure we settled in and had everything we needed. I highly recommend staying at Raven Ridge!!

Incredible views from a hot tub. Need I say more? This is the perfect getaway for anyone looking to disconnect from the rest of the world. The charming little cabin is just the right size for a couple or small family. Unbeatable year round views from that hot tub, I mean. You can’t beat it. It was a very pleasant stay. We got there about an hour after sunset and didn't have difficulty finding the property in the dark. Slept well listening to the sound of the river right next to us. I didn't realize that on the other size of the river was a road and we'd also hear cars. We purchased firewood from Carrie, and it was actually $10, not $5 like it mentions on the advertisement. We ended up wanting to get more wood, and that was a bit of a hassle as Carrie isn't actually the one managing the property. There were other people involved in managing the property that we had to communicate with and go find. Ultimately would've been easier to bring our own, but nevertheless we did acquire all the firewood we wanted, albeit all damp. There were some permanent residents on the property in nearby campers, all pleasant. Overall would recommend and may return in the future.

James landed on the property in 2009, built a small barn and milked 3 cows for 3 years. Since then; he has been learning construction trades, planting trees and gardening the hillsides. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months of saturdays for less than $5k. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason.
