The best star host camping near Syracuse

Sitting on the thumb of the Finger Lakes, Salt City is a gateway to the awesome nature of upstate New York. Syracuse is roughly halfway between Niagara Falls and the Adirondacks for easy side trips. But this small city has its own claim on natural beauty with lakes, forests, and farms. The New York State Fair sets up its tents here, covering the 375-acre grounds with horse shows, butter sculptures, and deep-fried Oreos.

Winter brings snow--and lots of it. Locals grumble, but the deep white makes for killer cross-country skiing. Highland Forest park bills itself as the Adirondacks of Central New York with 40 miles of trails, half of them groomed. Beaver Lake Nature Center boasts a warming hut and snow-shoe rentals.

The closest public camp is Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville. Two emerald-green glacial lakes are its centerpiece, where you can rent a rowboat or swim off the sandy beach. Tent camping is set back from the lakes amid pine trees, with options for cabins and RV camping. There's also an 18-hole course by Robert Trent Jones, a legendary golf course architect.

The old Erie Canal passes right by Green Lakes. The canal turned Syracuse into a thriving city. At the Erie Canal Museum in downtown Syracuse, visitors can go deep on its history.

Today, kayakers have free rein in the canal's retired sections. Try launching in Dewitt at Cedar Bay Park, then paddle 10 miles to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. The route is especially scenic in autumn when the turning leaves are a blazing canopy on the shore.

The Finger Lakes are close by, and Cayuga Lake State Park makes a good home base to dip in your toes. The park campground has cabins near the shore and hilltop tent sites. Boat launches are on the beach, and the waters are quite good for catching largemouth bass. Over a dozen vineyards and wineries are a short drive away.

Most state park campgrounds will accommodate trailers, but big rigs wanting full hook-ups should check out RV parks in the area. Several offer extra amenities such as free Wi-Fi, swimming, and boat launches.

All 4 camping sites are nestled into the Obstacle course. Trials riders and non-Trials Riders alike will find much to enjoy here. Campers unfamiliar with Trial are welcome to take advantage of a Lesson on one of our Rental Bikes, while the Obstacle Course is also super-fun on foot (for walks or runs), mountain bike, trials bicycle, or for playing with your RC toy! We have night lighting to turn on at your request, even if just to sit in the evening and enjoy the lights reflecting off the pond-We surely do! We are located on NY 38 but our traffic is not obnoxious (Log and Milk Trucks, Farm Tractors and Commuters). It is very peaceful here. Your camping can be as private, quiet and leisurely as you wish. The views and big sky are gorgeous in our corner of farm country. Our small pond (tho not suitable for fishing or swimming) provides entertainment w/ turtle sunbathing raft and lots of nature's visitors. Pets always welcome off-leash with your guidance. About the Trials Riding: Sundays are a practice day or Event day. We host 4 Mototrial Events each season (see below) and if spectating appeals, you can plan your trip to coincide. You're in for a treat if you've never seen these nimble motorcycles do their 'thing'... up, over, and around the obstacles. Events are busy and exciting, but no worries (!) trials bikes are not loud. Riders are friendly and considerate. If spectating not your thing- no worries. Non-event/non-practice days are quite laidback. If Trials riders come here for additional practice (or instruction) it's not loud or invasive, nor interferes with any camper training or play on the course. When riders are here (barring Events or Sunday Practice ), it's typically only 2-4 at once. Multiple activities co-exist nicely, as there is plenty of room for all. There are many days no one is on the course at all (!) and you may have it all to yourself or possibly with another camper. Hope to see you in our slice of heaven! Site is next to stream, bounded on opposite side by local road (so there is local traffic through the trees). There's a 30 amp electric hookup on site, but no sewer hookup. Water can be filled on property if needed. Location is just five minutes to Lower Treman Park or Buttermilk Park, with amazing hiking trails, seasonal stream fishing and swimming. Ten minute drive to Ithaca proper. No water after November 1st (hose can freeze)

1 night at Tryals Park Camp & Obstacle Course
This is your on stop spot for motorcycle Trials. Mike and Laurel have made a welcoming spot on the hillside for RV's. Easy access to parking from the road. They provided us with a nice welcome packet. That had plenty of information about the area. Places to eat or see. Most people who camp here will be coming for riding. Mike offers lessons as well. But it would a nice spot for anyone looking for a getaway. Don't be put off by the riding. This is not a motocross track. You might be amazed at seeing riders tackling the obstacles and trials bikes are quiet. You might even want to try it yourself? Looking forward to a summer stay. Thanks.

My boyfriend and I loved tent camping on this land! Lisa was very try accommodating and accepted our request in short notice. Site #2 was beautiful both during the day and at night. It was well maintained and the portable bathroom was clean. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to staying again in the future.

This was my second time staying at the little barn on the hill and my first solo trip there. It was a rainy autumn afternoon when I showed up but perfectly cozy inside the hayloft, where I set up my hammock. Laurel got me acquainted with the many new amenities, as they seem to always be making wonderful upgrades to the property. Mike and Laurel's land is the perfect place for me to go when I don't want the hassle of setting up my tent and want a wall and roof and a little electricity. To a tenter, this is a luxurious paradise and I can't wait to return.

Beautiful property and perfect location if you're looking to get away but still have access to all of the areas local shops and attractions. Lisa was great with communication and made sure we had everything we needed as far as the campsite goes. The platform was a huge plus with it being a bit rainy during our stay!! 10/10 experience!! My daughters and I enjoyed our little get away!

Laurel was the sweetest host. The camp site was in pristine condition. Easy access to electric and water. Do note a road with speed off 55 mph is within a 100 yards of the camp site. Great place for a few days stay or even a quick overnight stay.

My boyfriend and I recently converted a shuttle bus into our home on wheels. This was our maiden voyage and it could not have gone any better. Z’s land was the perfect first step for our trip. Easy to find, peaceful, and close by the state parks which was a plus. We stayed here for 2 nights as we explored the area. Wifi was great. Very convenient to have electrical and water hook up. Level spot too. Z was super responsive and an excellent host. We greatly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Z!

We booked the Landing for a short stay for traning seminar about 30 minutes away. We were greeted by Laurel shortly after we arrived. The site was nice and everything we needed. We didnt stay long enough to really enjoy the site but they had a table a chairs firepit with chairs and firewood availabe to use. Would absolutley reccomend staying there if your looking for a place in the Finger Lakes area.

Staying at Mike’s and Laurel’s property was an amazing getaway! Close to great food and cute towns, less than 5 minutes from an amazing state park, and less than a half an hour away from Ithaca and some of the finger lakes! We also had an absolute riding Trial Motorcycles for the first time! I recommend the scavenger hunt to get familiar with the property and the Trial biking course. Looking forward to our next stay!

Came again for Obstacle Course (see July review-tent at Hilltop). Great training with my border collie. My gal brought mountain bike this time to play. A good time for all. Highly recommend for training and fun to walk in evenings. First time renting Barn was awesome, just as described-better even. Several steps up from tent but still open-air. Thought about plugging in space heater (provided) but decided we didn't want to close up loft. Really nice at night. We were cozy enough in our sleeping bags just like our tent-but with futon mattress underneath us-and dry. Location near Rt. 38 wasn't issue for road noise for us. Description spot on about traffic 'not obnoxious' and I think muffled some by hillside trees too. Any traffic heard from road--just went along in a gentle rhythm -- like everything else here. Hosts are super accommodating in every way. Old school people who are there when you need 'em and leave you alone when you don't. The only possible drawback was being asked not to eat inside Barn. I'm a crackers-in-bed kinda guy- but I understand it- and appreciate what the Hosts do to keep critters and bugs out of Barn. Likely it ain't easy in this country setting- so no problem. The weather was a little damp outside but we built fire in the fire bowl and enjoyed warm supper just fine. It IS camping after all (!) my girl reminded me. Our dog of course was fine with the outside eating rule. Will be back again (and again) great place great hosts.

Mike and Laurel are awesome hosts. Great dark place for star gazing. I was up looking at late looking at the Milky Way. You Cant see that near a city. The cabin/shed was cool. Everything you need even a small fridge, flash light, water, outdoor faucet, sun heated shower and a place to charge phone. The outside looks like a resort. Got to see a green heron. Dont know about the WiFi but had great cell service. Don’t pass this by if you’re a camper. Way better than putting up a tent.

Looking for some peace and quiet? Up for an adventure with rustic camping? Our property was once part of a much larger business farm. It has not been under a tractor since 2010, except for mowing. We have been hosting for HipCamp since 2019 and we are eager to meet you and hear what you think of our acres.  The gorgeous sunsets over Lake Ontario are world renowned, and our primitive camp sites are just one half mile from the lake.  The terrain is hilly, elevation ranges from 320' - 380'.  Due to the location on the hill, great views of the spectacular sunrise can also be seen (from the ground) and pretty much most of the sunsets. Excellent opportunities for bird watching, we have seen everything from goldfinches to bald eagles, with sightings of indigo buntings, sparrowhawks, snow and Canada geese, according to season. Wildflowers, berries and herbs are in abundance, when in season. Being right near the fourth largest Great Lake the campgrounds is a great spot for cloud watching, kite sailing and star viewing - there is no light pollution.  Fresh water divers?  There are dozens of sunken shipwrecks in Lake Ontario and, NOAA national marine sanctuary in eastern Lake Ontario to protect historically significant shipwrecks and maritime heritage resources. Oh, and did I mention the world class fishing? Co-owner, Valerie, is a permaculturist and welcomes conversation about anything environmental.  The flattest part of the hill was once under cultivation but since 2010 has been allowed to revert to woodlands.  I farm trees, the only animals here will be the ones that Nature sends (or if you bring a pet). Fruit and nut trees have been planted, as well as some berries, so since 2010 they are not very large.  My trees are very important. Please take care not to injure them. Seasoned firewood is plentiful from the prunings as well as from deadfall and extra can be purchased at the farm - $6. per bundle.  (Per New York State DEC regulation, untreated firewood may not be moved over 50 miles.)  There is a working rocket mass heater in the barn and it will be fired up and roaring between October and April.  Knitting and crocheting lessons are yours for the asking.  Co-owner, William, may also be persuaded to show you some guitar licks.  Children 12 and under are discounted 50% off. Children under 2 are free. At the edges of the property you can see neighbors' houses but campsites are secluded from the neighbors as well as from each other. All campsites are drive in but you may be driving across a mown field. Sterling Nature Center (Great Blue Heron rookery!) and Sterling Renaissance Festival are each 4 miles away.  Gas station and farm store (Ontario Orchards -- great home-baked pies there!) are each 3 miles away. Sterling Creek Canoe- Kayak Launch - 3.5 miles.  Fair Haven Beach State Park and Little Sodus Bay - 7.5 miles.  City of Oswego and NY State University - 6 miles. And, if you are of that persuasion, the nearest McDonald's and Subway are 7 miles and Walmart is 10 miles away. Because I could be anywhere on the property and I would like to be available when you arrive, please advise me if you know you will be arriving after 5 PM.  All revenue from camping goes back into the property to continue to improve your experience. While we are open to winter camping, the farm road is on a hill that must be navigated to reach the campsites. In snowy or icy (or extremely muddy) conditions this may prove impossible for a typical vehicle and even give some 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles some trouble. There is room at the bottom of the hill for off road parking for one vehicle. It would then require hiking up about 500 feet to reach campsites. Also, when the weather is dropping below freezing (which could be between late October -- early May), you are advised to bring your own water as water left overnight will freeze. Please take responsibility for the energy you bring to this space. Campfires are encouraged but bonfires are not allowed. If you are unsure, just ask. This is also a 'leave nothing but footprints' campsite. We do not have trash removal. Thorndon Meadows acknowledges we are on native land originally inhabited by the Cayuga (Guyohkohnyoh – The People of the Great Swamp) of the Haudenosaunee  Confederacy who were scattered by European settlers in the early 1800’s.  We honor their stewardship and those who care for the land generations after.  This land is not ours, it is our turn, and we are grateful to share it with our guests.  We are committed to learning and protecting the land as its temporary caretakers.  We invite you to appreciate the land with us, all are welcome.

About the Property: Our unique property boasts quiet camping on a beautifully manicured MotoTrials Riding and Obstacle Play Course. 2025 marks our first year offering camping to the public, and we look forward to HipCampers joining us in our unique venue. We are located on NY 38 but our traffic is not obnoxious (Log and Milk Trucks, Farm Tractors and Commuters). It is very peaceful here. Your camping can be as private, quiet and leisurely as you wish. The views and big sky are gorgeous in our corner of farm country. Our small pond (tho not suitable for fishing or swimming) provides entertainment w/ turtle sunbathing raft and lots of nature's visitors. Pets always welcome off-leash with your guidance. About the Trials Riding: Sundays are a practice day or Event day. We host 4 Mototrial Events each season (see below) and if spectating appeals, you can plan your trip to coincide. You're in for a treat if you've never seen these nimble motorcycles do their 'thing'... up, over, and around the obstacles. Events are busy and exciting, but no worries (!) trials bikes are not loud. Riders are friendly and considerate. If spectating not your thing- no worries. Non-event/non-practice days are quite laidback. If Trials riders come here for additional practice (or instruction) it's not loud or invasive, nor interferes with any camper training or play on the course. When riders are here (barring Events or Sunday Practice ), it's typically only 2-4 at once. Multiple activities co-exist nicely, as there is plenty of room for all. There are many days no one is on the course at all (!) and you may have it all to yourself or possibly with another camper. Hope to see you in our slice of heaven! The cabin is located in a remote area of Bear Swamp State Forest. It is about 5 miles from the nearest paved road but has seasonal roads that take you to the cabin. There are many close attractions like Skaneateles Lake and Carpenters Falls. The Cabin doesn’t have electricity or water but we do have a generator available. We do not have a shower or bathroom but we have an outhouse. We do ask people to bring their own gas if you want to run the generator and woods to make a fire. I highly recommend 4x4 vehicles but I been there in a civic and a mini van.

Relax at Tilden Hill Farm its a 155 acre farm raising Black Angus Cattle it has been in the Brewer family for seven generations. Founded in 1798 by Josiah Brewer, the farm has served as a grist mill, chicken farm, cheese factory. We offer several types of site selection for your comfort. Choose from our private tent camping to relaxing RV sites. Our tent sites are quiet and scenic, just a quick walk down to the pond. Some of our sites you can park next to, but a few you will have to walk ~100 yards with your belongings. There are 2 bath houses on the campground with hot showers and toilets. All sites include a fire pit and picnic table. We have 10 full hook up sites (water/electric/sewer) and 9 sites with water and electric. There is a dump station and fire wood available to all for a fee. Once settled in, take a meandering walk through our 12 miles of walking trails or find your way down to our pond. Water activities are plentiful: fishing for bass, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, we accommodate it all! We look forward to seeing you at Tilden Hill Farm where you can "Experience a Family Tradition"
