From U.S. Highway 550 (mile marker 112.5), you will see the National Park sign, drive south on County Road 7900 for 5 miles.
After 5 miles (the road comes to a “T”) you will see another National Park sign, on the right hand side. Turn right on County Road 7950. You cannot turn left. (If you go straight, that will take you to Pueblo Pintado).
Drive 3 miles on County Road 7950. The pavement will end. On the right hand side you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp".
THE CAMPGROUND IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. There will be a sign that reads: “Horsethief Campground”. In front of the short road to the Campground.
At the end of the short road to the campground is: a large school building, and 2 other buildings. We apologize that the road is a little uneven, but we are looking to improve this real soon. You are welcome to park inside or outside the gated area.
Horse-Thief Campground is an upcoming camp; located on 5 acres of land and more, for campers to enjoy. In a quiet; serene, beautiful landscape area of the Dine Nation.
With beautiful sunrises; sunsets and night sky is out of this world. There are trails in which visitors may walk or bike, as well as a Look Out Point. Horse-Thief is currently a Dry Camp with no Electricity or running water however generators are welcome. There is one portable restroom.
P.S. If you have already paid on Hipcamp, you do not need to pay again. However, please sign the Waiver provided.

It's famous Inscription Rock has over 2000 names carved in sandstone, including one from Conquistador Coronado. Geronimo, and Billy the Kid are said to have frequented the area and even lived in nearby Candy Kitchen.

Flying Horse Retreat is a place for spiritual seekers to find vision and renewal through sound healing and retreat. We offer private retreat, sound healing chair sessions, vision quests, and Summer Camp (coming soon), but we are very excited about opening up the land to campers. It is a unique opportunity to experience normally private areas of this sacred land.
Our remote and quiet 20 acres of heavily forested mountainside includes deep gorges and rocky terrain, while Ponderosa Pine canopies offer shade from the sometimes intense NM sun. Wildlife is plentiful, though sometimes elusive. Deer, Elk, Fox, Bobcat, Lynx, Wild Turkey, Roadrunners and Coyotes are all regularly seen on the land.
El Morro Monument, easily seen from our Firecircle on the opposite end of the Valley, is a world class travel destination. The water tank at the base of it's rock was a relied upon water source during early expeditions. Conquistador Coronado, Lt. Beale and other famed explorers stopped here before traveling further west.
Flying Horse Retreat is across El Morro Valley, near the top of Oso Ridge in the Zuni Mountains, and has a panoramic view of the surrounding mesas. You may want to get a closer view of Los Gigantes - amazing sand sculptures carved by the wind and sacred to ancient tribes. We're just a few miles from the Continental Divide and Pie Town is a couple of hours further south.
Two art galleries, a Feed Store, a Holistic Food Store, and a gift/coffee shop are right across the highway and next door to the Cafe. Come visit our eclectic community of actors, healers, artisans, writers, organic farmers, and unique thinkers. (We are 50 miles from a town where supplies can be purchased, though the nearby Feed Store has a few camp related supplies and their holistic and organic food selections may surprise you.)
You may also want to visit the local Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in Candy Kitchen. At any one time they are host to 50+ Wolves and Hybrids.

Little Iron Campground sits on 5 acres of undeveloped land, with a single road running through the property. Vehicles with higher clearance are recommended, and 4x4 may be required depending on the time of year and weather conditions. Great facility! Used a basic tent camping spot which is right behind the main office. Bathrooms and laundry were just a step away. We only stayed one night so this was a great plus for us. They had an evening dinner menu, which we didn’t partake in but awesome to have after a long travel day and free pancake breakfast. Also great general store with all kinds of things you might need.

This was an excellent site if you like to be in a private setting. We had no issues finding it. There are all kinds of places to set up camp here as there are no “designated” campsites. It worked great for our 30ft toyhauler.

This was a great alternative to Gallo campground if you want to visit Chaco. We had a camper and so being in a dry camp was fine for us. We drove out on the property under a tree with some great views. There are other trees on the property to drive to that people were staying at also. The dark night star lit sky was incredible! It was quiet and a good place to come back to before and after visiting Chaco. Be prepared for a 30 minute drive on a dirt road that is very bumpy. We did see a lot of wild horses on the drive in and out of Chaco which made it. Yolanda was very nice and helpful and said that they are hoping to get water and electric out there soon.

This was such an amazing experience! You enter along an unpaved road and are basically in the middle of scrubland as far as you can see. We heard coyotes in the distance at night, the moon rose *orange* on the horizon, and the stars were incredible. So peaceful, and very close to Chaco Canyon. Thank you so much for hosting us!

This is a place to stay on the way to Chaco Canyon, and that’s it. Even knowing that, prepare yourself for austerity before you pull in. It is NOTHING but a flat dirt lot filled with rocks, nails (?) and some broken glass. But it’s flat, there’s a porta-john nearby, and some odd bits of construction materials that can be useful for holding things down while you setup your tent in hideous wind.
If you’re arriving on motorcycle note that there is some loose sand on the way down, but it’s not deep. If it rains ALL night long (like it did for us) the road back out is not too muddy.’

This was a perfect spot to use as base camp for exploring both Chaco Canyon and Bisti Badlands. Follow the directions provided by the host! Come in from 550 on the North side of town. Other routes your GPS may show you (particularly when coming from the south) will have you on washboard road.
The site was exactly as described. Level, dry camp location just as the road to Chaco becomes gravel.
