The Town of Mountainair is known for its vibrant arts scene, local studios, and galleries. It offers a true small-town feel with great restaurants, including the famous—and haunted—Shaffer Hotel. There are even rumors of sightings of the ghost of Billy the Kid! While not entirely remote, this is a peaceful spot where you can sit outside and marvel at the galaxy of stars visible on a clear night. You’ll be neighbors with the Forest Service and only a few miles from Cibola National Forest, the Manzano Mountains, and several Park Service sites such as the Abo and Quarai ruins. Nearby, you’ll also find a farmer’s market, a grocery store, and a few dollar stores for essentials. This is a great location for birdwatching, spotting small wildlife, and occasionally seeing deer. My favorite memory growing up here was listening to the great horned owls—you’ll likely find owl pellets and other interesting natural treasures on the lot. While the 4-acre property isn’t large enough for real hiking, it’s perfect for peaceful walks and exploring nature. Please note: there is still some debris left from the old homesite, such as tires, but cleanup can be arranged based on rental interest. Campfires are welcome, as long as they comply with current Forest Service fire bans. You must bring your own water for fire extinguishing.

The sunsets vary each day with vibrant colors and the sunsets are just and grand. Fires are okay if the wind is low or in a contained area. There is wildlife such as owls, crows, hawks, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, badgers, snakes, coyotes and more. The property is not fenced in so you do not want to leave any food out at night if sleeping in a tent. I live a short distance away and I am available if you need anything. The entrance is on Jupiter and Torcido, and that will take you to Venus. Once on Venus, that road will wind around to the camp site. Park anywhere you would like. No human traffic goes through that area. Pick a spot and enjoy! There may or may not be other campers, but so far, it has been pretty quiet around here. Water refill station is not far and available for public use. You will have to sign up for a city water account to fill water. That is free to sign up, and you do not have to be a local. Anyone can do this. The water is one cent per gallon.

This was the perfect spot for my quick trip to Albuquerque. Tara was great with communication and the space was super cozy. Everything you might need for a good night's rest or more if you're needing a warm, safe, comfortable place to hang. The location is perfect for whatever your adventure brings, easy access to key spots on the city and beyond. Tara kindly provided bedding and the house has all the things you might need (minus a shower as she thoughtfully advertised). A great alternative to a vacation rental and better than camping (no gear required). Such a great offering!

Really great to see someone making charming tiny houses out of native materials with his own hands! Also, the area has a lot to offer, including great hiking in the nearby mountains (but reasonably high clearance vehicles necessary to get to the closest trail heads) and a comfortable and inexpensive train into both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Lastly, the hosts are really good people--community minded, kind hearted, thinking for themselves.

She provided a comfy bed, extra bedding, dining table and chairs, microwave, toaster oven, small fridge, kitchen sink and toilet. If you have extra people she'll also provide an extra mattress. Remember to bring mosquito repellent, as there are many mosquitos in the area.

Roan & Ivy are amazing human beings. They were so welcoming to us. The land is amazing. The view is serene. Our experience exceeded our expectations on every level. We'll definitely return when we're passing through New Mexico again.

Good place to stay for the balloon fiesta. It's not close enough to walk (about 2.7mi walk) but was an easy drive to the fiesta. Directions were clear and accurate.

2 nights at Balloon Fiesta Farm Oasis 2

Great, open space that we felt comfortable in during our stay for the balloon fiesta! We had the place to ourselves midweek and were grateful for the short drive to the balloon parking - about 2 miles. On the day we were leaving, we got to enjoy a fantastic view of the balloons and had several land in the surrounding fields. Very cool experience! I anticipated it being a lot louder with it being in the city, but it was quiet and an awesome snag for an amazing price when everything skyrockets during fiesta week!

Casa Huevo is a cozy delight. Gorgeous open New Mexico skies and kind, lovely hosts. It was chilly outside (early October), but inside the little dome I was more than comfortable. Loved the experience and wouldn’t hesitate to return!
