It is here that we run Roots School, a wilderness earth skills school, instructing adults and youth alike.
The land has over a half a mile of river frontage and several streams, a beautiful varied forest, rambling topography, and plenty of wildlife. Many lessons in tracking may be found as whitetails, moose, black bear, fishers, bobcats, porcupine, coyotes, foxes, mink, ermine, snowshoe hare, wild turkey, and ruffled grouse, are seen and tracked. Often times we are also lucky enough to catch a hawk circling the pasture and to hear the barred owls calls in the darkness of night. Bike trails/x country ski trails are connected right to our homestead. Continue on the trail and access some of the best mountain biking trails and snow biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Sugarbush Resort is a 10 minute drive and is one of the best ski mountains in the area!
If you are looking for gym and shower facilities, you can stop into the Sugarbush Resort, just a short driving distance, for a day pass fee.

Main House Front Porch
The front porch of the main house has continued to be a wonderful gathering place with outstanding sunset views and surrounding terraced gardens with blossoms and berries that attract hummingbirds and bees. We serve meals from the adjoining big kitchen, and these can be enjoyed on the porch or taken on trays to the nearby Plum Grove, other outdoor settings. The porch is a great place to meet with others or enjoy a place to sit and read. There is also a good internet connection on the porch and a place to charge devices.
You are welcome to walk anywhere on Metta Earth land. Or you may want to walk on the surrounding dirt roads, all with very minimal cars and great mountain views or along the river. We can give further directions and information about the region when you are here.
Our stays range from basic tent sites to Yurts and Canvas Tents. We have something for everyone.
We have four yurts nestled on a knoll among maples, beeches, balsam, and other trees. They each are positioned for a sense of privacy from the others and have little paths connecting them. They all are well loved and humble, beautiful, light filled circular spaces with a round dome skylight, lattice siding, windows with screens for summer use and in winter extra insulation provided by window quilts. Each yurt has a wood stove for colder weather. The yurts are furnished simply with various configurations of single and double beds, tables, chairs, shelving, and sheepskins or other floor rugs. At night a few of the paths are lit with solar lamps, so it is wise to bring a flashlight/headlamp as well. Beeswax candles provide inside night lighting. Some of the yurts have string, solar lights around the inside of the yurt walls.
We have 5 bell tents that are lovely, roundish shaped tents with a peak. Four of them are smaller, one-person tents, and one is larger for a couple or 2 people. We provide amattress and pillow with organic bedding and a sheepskin rug, and a simple storage crate/table. It’s a good idea to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially in the potentially colder shoulder seasons in May and in September.
If you have a tent, insulated ground mat, and sleeping gear, we have many inspiring sites in the surrounding forest glades, meadows, and fields. Those who choose to camp have access to outdoor composting toilets, a hot water outside faucet for bucket bathing, and outdoor shower available in the warmer seasons. Camping requires a certain hardiness and adequate gear. Weather during the growing season (May – October) in the mountains of Vermont is unpredictable. Temperatures range from freezing temperatures at night in the spring and fall to gloriously warm days and even hot days.

It's lambing time!!! This is the best time of year to visit us, as maximum cuteness is running around just a short walk across the suspension bridge from where you will be staying! We currently have 11 newborn lambs all less than two weeks old (two new arrivals today!) and two ewes are still waiting to deliver. Who knows...maybe they will wait til you get here!
Our farm was named after the summer home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trollhaugen Farm means Troll hill, but the only real trolls around these parts are the sheep. Our farm has sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks that you are welcome to visit.
The yurt sits under the trees next to a babbling brook. A suspension bridge connects you to the farm area. The yurt is private and has a fire pit right out back where you can grill or just sit and enjoy the fire.
The colorful yurt offers a comfy four poster bed, a small kitchen area and a bathroom with shower and composting toilet.
This is a great place for children, bikers, swimmers, hikers or anyone who just wants to get away from it all for a few days. There are many lovely hikes, one of which takes you to a pond you can swim in. You can also hike up in the woods behind the yurt.
Newfane village is one of the most picturesque villages in Vermont, with a courthouse on the green. There are two restaurants in Newfane, two coffee shops, a flea market on Sundays, and a great antique store. We are close to Brattleboro, home to one of the best coops in the northeast, as well as many fun stores and an art museum.

Inside, the yurt is simply but comfortably furnished, with a wood stove for heat and solar power for lighting and device charging. This is a true off-grid stay—there is no running water. Cooking is done in a separate outdoor kitchen area with a roof but open sides. It works well in fair weather and most of the year, though winter cooking does require preparation for the cold. A nearby propane incinerator toilet, imported from Norway, completes the setup.
Access to the yurt is on foot via a short walk from the parking area, so guests should be comfortable carrying their gear. In winter, snow can make access more challenging. There is no running water on site.
Our self-serve farm stand is open year-round and reflects the British roots of the farm, offering baked goods and farm products you won’t typically find locally. It's lambing time!!! This is the best time of year to visit us, as maximum cuteness is running around just a short walk across the suspension bridge from where you will be staying! We currently have 11 newborn lambs all less than two weeks old (two new arrivals today!) and two ewes are still waiting to deliver. Who knows...maybe they will wait til you get here!
Our farm was named after the summer home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trollhaugen Farm means Troll hill, but the only real trolls around these parts are the sheep. Our farm has sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks that you are welcome to visit.
The yurt sits under the trees next to a babbling brook. A suspension bridge connects you to the farm area. The yurt is private and has a fire pit right out back where you can grill or just sit and enjoy the fire.
The colorful yurt offers a comfy four poster bed, a small kitchen area and a bathroom with shower and composting toilet.
This is a great place for children, bikers, swimmers, hikers or anyone who just wants to get away from it all for a few days. There are many lovely hikes, one of which takes you to a pond you can swim in. You can also hike up in the woods behind the yurt.
Newfane village is one of the most picturesque villages in Vermont, with a courthouse on the green. There are two restaurants in Newfane, two coffee shops, a flea market on Sundays, and a great antique store. We are close to Brattleboro, home to one of the best coops in the northeast, as well as many fun stores and an art museum.

East Montpelier is home to nearly 15 miles of walking trails through rolling farmland and forest. Camel's Hump, Mount Hunger and Mt. Mansfield are all within a half 45 minute drive. The local parks department maintains lovely ski trails with panoramic views, and nearby ponds offer wonderful spots for swimming and boating. If you love life on two wheels, treat yourself to the miles of dirt roads and nearby mountain biking trails. I'm an avid outdoorswoman and will happily point you and your adventurous spirit to the best spots in the area!
In addition to being close to several state parks (Little River, Groton, Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield), East Montpelier hosts a dozen miles of walking trails through woods and fields. Montpelier maintains miles of trails behind the state capitol, along the North Branch River and in fields and forests just minutes away.

Cariad Bach Yurt is an off-grid yurt set in a quiet corner of our working sheep farm on the outskirts of Poultney, Vermont. Backing onto pasture and overlooking the river, it’s designed as a peaceful glamping retreat for two—a place to slow down, unplug, and enjoy the rhythms of farm life.
The yurt is traditionally inspired and imported from Mongolia, where yurts have long been used by sheep-raising communities as practical, seasonal homes. That connection felt like a natural fit here. Our farm is centered around pasture-raised sheep, and depending on the time of year, you may see animals grazing nearby or hear them settling in for the evening. When animals are on the farm, guests are welcome to arrange a visit.
The site is private and has its own entrance, separate from the main farmyard. While we’re close to the road, the yurt sits in a quieter pocket of the property with direct access to the river. Evenings are calm, with the sound of water and the surrounding countryside.
Inside, the yurt is simply but comfortably furnished, with a wood stove for heat and solar power for lighting and device charging. This is a true off-grid stay—there is no running water. Cooking is done in a separate outdoor kitchen area with a roof but open sides. It works well in fair weather and most of the year, though winter cooking does require preparation for the cold. A nearby propane incinerator toilet, imported from Norway, completes the setup.
Access to the yurt is on foot via a short walk from the parking area, so guests should be comfortable carrying their gear. In winter, snow can make access more challenging. There is no running water on site.
Our self-serve farm stand is open year-round and reflects the British roots of the farm, offering baked goods and farm products you won’t typically find locally. Guests staying at the yurt can arrange special pre-order offerings, including breakfast items and pasture-raised lamb or mutton for the grill.
Cariad Bach Yurt is best suited for couples, hikers, and bikers looking for a quiet, nature-focused stay. No pets and no smoking in the buildings.

We loved staying at the Owl House. We had a parking spot and the owners met us when we got there, giving us recommendations of where to explore. Lots of beautiful quiet land and a cozy yurt to rest in. Would definitely recommend!

Weekend Trip to Back 80 Yurt
Ivan was a great host. He took the time to help us get our gear up the road by snowshoe and made sure we understood how everything worked at the Yurt. He had shoveled out the deep snow so that everything was accessible. The yurt was cozy and warm despite the temps being negative 10 and the winds blowing at 40 mph. We were able to hike directly from the yurt to the peak of Mt Firescrew using Ivan’s recommendations ( about 6.5 miles round-trip). Unfortunately, high winds, low temps, and icy conditions prevented us from continuing to the summit of Mt Cardigan. We plan to come back again.

Group trip
Spent a weekend catching up with friends here. The yurt is amazing, super comfortable and warm with the wood stove, easy to cook on the gas range, water nearby for cleaning up. Brought our own potable water. Nice privy. Left some extra supplies behind for the next people which seems like a well established tradition. We hiked around Welton falls to the AMC lodge, saw a black bear, hiked Oregon Mt the next day. We will definitely be looking to return in the summer.

This was a lovely yurt, very well appointed with all the right furniture (and not too much) and an efficient wood stove. It's on a quiet dirt road that leads to the boat launch for Willard Pond, so I could drive my kayak down but it was an easy walk when I didn't have the boat to carry. The water's very clear and looks lovely for swimming (just not in November!) and the surrounding land is an Audubon sanctuary with some well-marked trails and great views. (Warning: lots of deer ticks!!) A fantastic getaway!

Weekend Trip to La Lu Farm camp site
La Lu Farm is a beautiful property! The Goat Yurt is comfortable and the wood-burning stove makes it very cozy. The yurt is a good base camp for exploring the cute nearby towns and hiking in the Green Mountains. On a cold night, be sure to bring a warm sleeping bag and extra firewood (also, bring toilet paper for the outhouse). My spouse and I had lovely stay and would recommend!

We loved staying in the yurt during leaf peeping season! We were very warm, cozy, and feeling ‘off the grid’ in this secluded sunshine flooded spot with very little, if any, cell service. Our 26 lb pocket pittie had a blast running around all the hills and hopping around in the brush like a bunny. She was very sad when it was time to leave. I think this spot would be excellent for folks with small children as well because there’s plenty of nooks and crannies to explore without going very far. We loved sitting at the outdoor breakfast nook, reading, and napping in the breeze.

7 nights at La Lu Farm camp site
My partner and I spent a week at LaLu Farms for a getaway and to experience Vermont during the beginning of Fall. Constancia was a fantastic contact leading up to our trip, texting me various places we should try for local foods and trails.
When we arrived, her husband, Kevin, greeted us and walked us down to the yurt(about a 3 minute walk from where we parked). We were provided a good amount of firewood for the week, and we're told to take any wood we found in the surrounding woods if we needed more. The yurt was nice and cozy, with a cast iron heater to keep us warm on the cooler nights. The view of Green Mountain National Forest from the porch was worth the trip in of itself!! Kevin and Constancia would check in if they were out when we returned, but let us be and enjoy the trip.
The goats (8 of them) were such sweethearts. Very shy at first, but by the last day they were walking up to us and trying to be part of the family. The whole yurt and area we started felt like it was our own little goat farm. There was a compost outhouse near the yurt, which was very well kept and much better than we imagined! There is a shower and running toilet in the barn, which we used a few times. It does have a little smell of a barn, but nothing too overpowering and was very nice when coming back from a long hike.
The village of Waitsfield was a hidden gem. About 10 minutes from the farm, it has everything you need.

Wonderful stay! The yurt is clean and spacious with comfortable beds. They recently installed a propane stove in the yurt that works very well with two burners. The outdoor kitchen was clean and had everything we needed.
Be prepared for a bit of a walk to the yurt and no cell service. WiFi at the school building worked well though.
We enjoyed the creek and trails. Lovely stay!

We really enjoyed our three night stay at Trollhaugen! It was relaxing and peaceful. The setting was perfect and private though we could see and hear the farm animals across the brook. We did venture over the very cool “troll” bridge, to visit the animals. The area was beautiful and the people at the general store greeted my husband every morning as he went for coffee as if he were an old friend. Bring coffee if you want to make it yourself and get ice at the grocery store as the general store didn’t have any when we were there. Otherwise, the rustic yurt was well-equipped with everything else we needed. The bed was comfy, the eggs were delish and even with the extreme heat, sleeping was comfortable with our little fan and the windows open. The indoor bathroom with a shower was an A+ for me! My kind of camping - with shelter, a bed and a private bath.

We loved staying at the Yurt this past weekend. The location was easy to find and very centrally located in the Sugarbush area. We were minutes drive from swimming, hiking and restaurants. The facilities were rustic but clean. We had a great time meeting folks at the fire pit and cooking area. The fire files were like fireworks and we slept great other than the 3:00 visit by a pair of owls (I think they were owls, totally worth it). Laura was very responsive and her sister and partner checked in with us a few times to make sure we had everything we needed.
