All You Need is a 111 acre paradise that is home to some VERY unique and endangered habitat. Our northern boundary is a tract of DeSoto National Forest, where we have practically exclusive access to another 90 acres of longleaf pine savannah and more bottomland creeks. The sandhills are a "desert in the rain," home to prickly pear cactus and yuccas, abundant lichens (deer "moss"), the endangered black pine snake, and our mascot, the also endangered Gopher Tortoise. We're a nature education and retreat center where we share permaculture practices, homesteading/sustainable living skills, conservation practices, and approaches to connecting more deeply to the land. Check out our sister non-profit, the Burrow Nature Center. You will have access to our many walking paths and our swimming pond, as well as a 15 minute walk to part of DeSoto National Forest, which butts up to our property line. We would love to have you as our guest on the land, and are especially eager to meet travelers who deeply love nature and want to live in better relationship to it! Camp Strong Wood derives its name from the many natural growth oak trees found on the property as well as being in the Strong Hope community. Wildlife abounds with deer, rabbit, squirrel, fox, racoon, opossum, armadillo, chipmunk among other forest dwellers. The lake is in a natural flood bottom and is stocked with largemouth bass, perch, channel catfish and natural flathead catfish which came in through the creek which runs through the land. Weekend Trip to Camp Strong Wood

Our stay was pretty much what we were looking for - secluded, quiet, and comfortable. The best part was the staff. They were beyond just friendly and professional, but were also very accommodating. They gave us a side-by-side tour of the property, let us borrow a phone charger, and even offered us fishing poles and bait to use in the two beautiful ponds. If you are looking for something secluded and quiet where you can just relax and enjoy nature, we strongly recommend.

We had a wonderful experience! We booked the Yurt and the micro cabin for a family trip and both spaces were beautiful and comfortable. At one point the water stopped working and the hosts worked continuously to get it fixed and it was resolved within the day. Great trails. Very kid-friendly as well.

The land is absolutely beautiful, pond was refreshing and peaceful. I stayed in the micro cabin which was great. I would recommend that you do bring all of your own cooking supplies as there wasn't everything there that was needed and the outside space is not covered so when it was raining I didn't have access to the little kitchen.

Chris was terrific from the moment we arrived. The cabin was adequate for our needs and the outdoor kitchen on the porch was perfect. The land and the lake are beautiful. Fresh from the lake fish fried for dinner! A great getaway and we will be back.

I feel my words will prove inadequate to capture the essence of what Camp Strong Wood has to offer anyone who is fortunate enough to follow their sense of wonder into this beautiful land. If you are trying to have a human experience by going back to basics, without sacrificing civility and genuine hospitality - this is the place that needs to top your list. The staff (Chris and Zoey) are wonderful and caring people who made us Floridians feel welcome from the moment we arrived late at night when they came out to greet us with a smile! The atmosphere of community, communication with the land and its creatures and features, and tangible love of what the do was so refreshing - people who are so grateful and blessed to call their stewardship of this acreage their livelihood. Everything is sanitary and well-constructed with care. I loved my stay and will be back in the near future. This place is well worth your time and money, highly recommend.

The micro cabin was super cozy. The land was gorgeous. They are doing a wonderful job caring for the land and it shows. The lichen loop and all the trails were so nice to stroll. We loved sitting by the clear pond as well. The outdoor kitchen attached to the micro cabin was very useful and appreciated.

The micro cabin was terrific! The outdoor kitchen had everything I needed, the bed was comfy, the air conditioner saved me on a very muggy night, and the property was truly wonderful to experience. Really special place, and highly recommended!

Where to go

Mississippi’s Gulf Coast

Some of the state’s most divine camping is found along the Gulf Coast. Gulf Islands National Seashore protects over 135,000 acres of the mainland and barrier islands in Mississippi and Florida. Hike amid the sand dunes, hit the waters in a boat or kayak, go deep-sea fishing, or explore wonders under the waters. Further inland, Clark Creek Nature Area is a fascinating landscape, with 700 acres of bluffs and pines. The National Park Service’s Davis Bayou Campground can accommodate tent and RV camping within the National Seashore. Private RV parks and glamping rentals can be found in beachside towns like Ocean Springs and Biloxi. Or, venture along the coast to find Gulfport and Bay St. Louis and more.

Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail

One way to explore the state is with a drive along the NPS’s Natchez Trace Parkway. Crossing three states, the bulk of the parkway runs diagonally across Mississippi along a 444-mile route paralleling the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. It offers a trek through time, following pathways formed by Native Americans, early European settlers, and more. The National Park Serve offers three first-come-first-served primitive campgrounds along the Natchez Trace. Campsites are free and can accommodate both tents and RVs. Plan a longer stop in Natchez, which has several private RV parks and glamping options, including Natchez State Park. This town overlooks the Mississippi River and offers a lot of character.

Northern Mississippi

Northern Mississippi is home to the state’s mountains. They may not be as high as other peaks, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t scenic. This small section of the Appalachians is home to Tishomingo State Park, an unexpected land of ferns, waterfalls, and craggy bluffs. A wooded campground offers RV sites and primitive tent camping. Two grand lakes provide recreation and scenery. Sardis Lake is a popular camping area to the west, and Bay Springs Lake is a favorite in the east. The Army Corps of Engineers operates several waterfront campgrounds.
