We bought this property in 2012 and have built several buildings and forged paths throughout the 32 acres. Our road is part of the North Country Trail, a footpath stretching over 4,600 miles from Middlebury in central Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park in central North Dakota. While tearing down the existing house, we constructed two bedrooms in the pole barn for a quick living space. Once settled in the pole barn, we a built a small log cabin with already felled timbers from the local woods, except for the box frame which was purchased from the local Amish. Prior to building our permanent log cabin home, this small cabin was our camp site and is now being rented to people that want to relax and enjoy the outdoors. In the middle of the woods, we created a campground to be enjoyed by hikers and on the North side of our property is a tree line between two fields that is a great small camper/tent camping spot.

Half way between Chicago and Detroit is a city named Kalamazoo. Our place is near the intersection of US 131 and I-94, so whichever direction you are traveling is accessible. Whether you are heading to the beauty of "up north" or running between the big cities east and west, this is a great spot to rest and enjoy some down time. Lake Michigan is a 40 minute drive west from here and if you are a bicyclist, you can ride the Kal-Haven Trail from the trail head about 2 miles from here, all the way to the Big Lake and back (35.5 miles one way). We have trails in the woods and open fields to look over, depending on your preference. As of this year, there is no electricity and water hookup, so tents or trailers with electric and water are your option. We have a bell tent available for a single or a couple to stay. On that same site is room for a trailer or tents, if you want to invite your friends, and we've built a cooking shelter and a bath house that has a compost toilet and a shower with on demand hot water from solar energy. We have a horse farm on the property and offer horse experiences (All our activities are done on the ground near or with the horses, so, no riding is offered) at an additional fee. It is expected that you will remain outside the fence from the horses while you are staying, unless you sign a release and are accompanied by the owner to interact with them. We do not allow dogs. There are two campsites cleared in the woods, for tent camping, and more will be cleared in 2025, as time allows. There will be a bathhouse with a compost toilet and on-demand hot water nearby those campsites. If you want to stay before our build, we will offer a lower rate, but expect you to take away your own waste when you leave or clarify with us where whether there is an appropriate place on the property to dispose of it. At some point during the fall of 2025, we are placing a restored vintage 1957 Ideal camper in a separate area of the property. It will have solar power and an indoor compost toilet, with a stove and sink. It will host a single or a couple who can sleep on a full sized mattress. Another sleeping area may be offered from converting the table, but we are not sure how comfortable it will be until we've completed the renovation.

Birch Lake is absolutely gorgeous and makes for a great kayak ride. Enjoy fishing or water sports on local Diamond or Donnell Lakes located within a few minutes of our farm. The property was originally owned by a family name Nichols (thus the name of the lake). It was handed down to the sons who each owned half the property. The driveway down the middle of property that leads to the lake was originally a fence line that divided the two pieces of property. The brothers did not get along and their are several stories of their warring on how to maintain the property.My parents bought this piece of property in 1964 and created a camp called "Lakeside Farm Camp", a small all boys camp. The camp has gone through several changes since then but has always been owned by the Edwards family. The property is shared by (2) full-hook up RV sites and a cabin. If available, the cabin and sites may be rented together however the owners, Jim and Maria, use the cabin much of the summer leaving just the RV sites available. The property is at mile market 13 of the Kal-Haven Trail - the midpoint. The Kal-Haven Trail is a biking, cross-country skiing, walking, running, snowmobiling - you name it, the trail that goes 34 miles from Kalamazoo to South Haven. Literally steps from the property and you are on the trail. But you may not need to leave the property, with 6.3 acres of woods and field, with trail cut through PLUS the added public lands butted up to Tincan's property line, giving almost 20 acres to roam. Each RV site - far enough apart to be separate, close enough if you and friends/family want to camp together, has a fire pit and fireplace. Each RV site offers water, 30|50AMP electrical and septic. The dock may have availability for keeping you boat - please inquire. There are kayaks and some bikes (mostly teen and adult size) that may be used. These are shared amenities for the cabin and campsite guests and offered on a first come, first serve basis. There are surprises galore around the property; big foots to be found tucked around the property, games, and overall just a fun place to be. This was a run-down fishing cabin Jim and Maria lovingly brough back to life as a second home and they delight in sharing it. Jim often referred to it as "The Tincan" while working on it as it was - indeed, a tin shack and the name stuck. Kate, your booking coordinator, helps Jim and Maria tend to the administrative side of getting the property booked and keeping the details in order. 2Chicks And A Farm is a small working farm on 20 acres, owned and run by Julie & Theresa Graham. We are 13 minutes from South Haven and Lake Michigan, 30 minutes from the city of Kalamazoo and just under an hour from Grand Rapids. Those of you who have visited in the past will notice that we significantly downsized this year. Due to Township and State regulations, we are now limited to offering only four campsites unless we get licensed, which at this time is cost prohibitive. So, we have selected the four most highly rated sites and upgraded them, to truly make your experience here special. About half of the 20 acres is wooded, with walking trails around the property, to include our fish stocked pond and a little tributary of the Black River. All sites have a fire ring, or metal fire pit, and picnic table. We have an outdoor propane shower that provides both hot and cold water. A free refreshment bar is available 24/7. Feeling a little peckish before breakfast, or after dinner? Help yourself to a snack and a hot or cold drink. You are welcome to collect eggs for breakfast and fresh produce from our gardens (for a fee). We are a working farm and registered as two Non-Profits. One an animal rescue, primarily working with cats. At any given day we have 20-30 cats roaming around the farm. All are under the care of our vet, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and treated for fleas and ticks. All important because they will want to interact with you. Some will want to sleep with you. Our 100 plus flock of poultry, comprised of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys, free range during the day, so leave the Prada's at home. If you are staying at Sam's Place, your closest neighbors will Penelope and Petunia, our two female sister pigs. The prevailing winds are down from your site, but you may hear them squabble. Our herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats will love your attention and treats we can provide. Arriving in March is Jack, a miniature donkey...we are very excited! Please try to check-in by 8pm. Exceptions can be made. There are locally mandated quiet hours (10-7 Sun through Thur, and 11-7 Fri and Sat). Hanging out by a fire and chatting is fine.

Need a quiet, secluded getaway? Our off-grid cabin is on approximately 10 acres of private woods. As you turn off the main road into our cabin's driveway, you will begin to understand why this is our hidden gem. We also have dishes, utensils, hot dog sticks, fry pie makers, pots and pans, a tripod grill for over the fire, and a small charcoal grill (bring your own charcoal). You will also want to bring a cooler to keep any food cold. Outside, we have a fire pit, wood to collect or purchase, and a hammock to fully enjoy your stay. Our bathroom is an outhouse and has been described as the “cleanest outhouse in Michigan.” Our latest addition is a seasonal rustic outdoor shower! We provide water that is heated by solar power (or you can heat some on the stove to hurry the process!) The shower is seasonal - only available from May to September. Within 1/4 mile is the St. Joe River which is a great place for kayaking. We also have kayaks and quads for rent. We also have some short trails on the property and a railroad bed adjacent to the cabin area. Our cabin is powered by a small and very quiet Honda generator. It is super easy to start. The cabin’s main source of heat is a wood stove with wood we provide. An air conditioner is provided for the summer. For more than two people will be an additional $10 per night per person. Pets are a $25 per pet additional fee. Pets are not to be on furniture and not to be taken into the loft for their protection.

We stayed at Sam's Place Bell Tent for one night of our spring "moms weekend" with 4 moms and 4 babies/toddlers in early May and had a great time! Julie's farm was easy to find. We were able to just call her using the contact info in our reservation once we arrived and she came right out to meet and gave us an orientation of the space. Julie is so sweet and friendly and really went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and set for our stay. Julie had cots with cushions as well as an air mattress (added to our booking in advance) set up in the bell tent before we arrived. There was a buddy heater with propane tank ready for us (VERY appreciated as the temps were in the 30s overnight) and a welcome bucket with assorted snacks, smores kit, and even pack of fire coloring tablets for our campfire. A very generous bundle of firewood was on the site, a picnic table, sunbrella, a couple of camp chairs, and twinkle lights around the tent. Her usual refreshments station wasn't quite set up for the season yet so she made a point of bringing us a large thermos of hot water and everything we could need for warm beverages! A water spigot and porta potty nearby provided for essential needs and we all enjoyed meandering the farm and seeing the friendly animals. Lovely space, great host, and fun time for kids and adults alike.

1 night at Camp Forest

The land is secluded and wild and beautiful. The bus is so unique and spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable and they supplied me with fairy solar lights. The property is incredible, there are 22 acres to walk and explore. Crystal set up a fire pit, they brought me fresh eggs and water. They also had a kayak and paddle board to use on their pond. The whole experience felt private and the bus made it so memorable. Very thoughtful hosts, big property and i would absolutely stay again.

I loved the camp ground. There was so much to do and so much fun! There’s the lake that has a water bike, canoes and kayaks along with life vest. There’s also a slide that’s so fun as well as bikes. The kitchen has a lot of amenities as well!

2 nights at McCormick Artisans Woods/River

Ann and Mac were awesome hosts, amazing conversations yet they gave us privacy. Wildlife is abundant on their property. We got our fishing line wet and had fun with the spring peepers. The craftsmanship of the cabin was beautiful. Cast iron wood cooking stove was great for heat and meal prep. We lived sitting out at the fire ring and listening to nature...and the occasional chicken. We will return.

1 night at McCormick Artisans Woods/River

What a BEAUTIFUL escape from the hustle and bustle of the crazy world we live in. Mac and Ann were lovely and gracious hosts. Seems like they’d be happy to leave you alone if you want privacy but more than willing to let you in on their slice of heaven and how they care for the land and reap the benefits in return. The craftsmanship of every structure and trail on this property is so intentional and beautiful. We saw a bald eagle upon arrival, plenty of hawks, evidence of beavers, owl pellets and a pileated woodpecker!! Definitely coming back when Ann’s garden is in full swing. Definitely a rustic site but plenty comfortable and water is provided. Truly an incredible space and one we won’t forget and hope to get back to soon!! Thanks Mac and Ann<3

Cute place with all the amenities! Awesome location right on the Kalhaven bike trail. Bring your own bikes or there’s plenty there to use. Close to a few towns just a short bike ride. Fun for the kids with vintage video games if the weathers off and lots of lake fun and a cool forest slide for warm weather sledding! Great stop on our mostly rustic spring break so we got to do some laundry and get showers and recharge in real beds!

I wonderfully cozy little retreat even in the heart of winter. You can feel completely isolated and lost in your own world while still having access to modern comforts. Highlight was the vast property to forested area to explore.

This is a great spot off the beaten path. A hidden gem. Scott and his wife were super welcoming on their property and we're able to help with anything we needed. Deer walked thru the camp and property. Lovely walking path thru the property as well. Very welcoming. We will definitely be back soon.

The cabin was perfect and better than we remember when we stayed last year! Titus was kind enough to start the fire for us since we were arriving late. Very comfortable stay for us and our cats. You get an incredible view of the stars when it’s a clear night and the sound of the water trickling in the pond was soothing.

Very cool historic cabin surrounded by a marsh. My dog had a great time exploring the area. The owners put in a great propane heater and I had a nice warm evening in the cabin. Would definitely return!
