With the original home built in 1785, Milk Thistle farm is on the historic register and is comprised of the main house and 5 acres of land. It is run as a small non-profit animal sanctuary and is home to rescued chickens, goats, and pigs, as well as two humans and their dog and cat companions. The main property is fenced in, with a large back field great for tent camping, and an orchard to explore that can also double as hammock camping. There is parking for cars and bikes. We try to minimize our impact on the environment as much as possible, and encourage our guests to compost, recycle, and dispose of waste accordingly. Please note we have dogs, including a Livestock Guardian Dog that does bark to alert us of new people and warn off would be predators. You will be the only ones at Fernwood, or Fernwood 2 unless we happen to be up working on the land.  No matter where you set up you'll have your own private fire pit, and level ground for your tent(s).  Come and enjoy a quiet retreat, or use Fernwood as a base for many outdoor activities-biking, fishing, hiking-all nearby.  Natchaug Forest offers great trout fishing.  Goodwin State Forest is less than 3 miles away by car where you can put in a canoe on Pine Lake, amble through the wildflower and pollinator gardens, or enjoy the Education Center and Museum. From Goodwin, you can access the Air Line State Park Bike/Hiking Path.  Hampton also has a general store that has simple food, frozen dinners that Kara will heat up for you, gifts, and awesome Ice Cream Sodas! Absolutely gorgeous and remote location! Dark enough to see the stars, quiet enough to count every cricket, frog, & owl lulling you to sleep. Didn't see or hear a single car or person the entire time we were there. There's also a beautiful nature reserve up the road that opens up deeper into the woods! Alan's a very kind and thorough host, providing firewood, porto-potty, and water to wash up with. The property is very well-maintained, with moss & soil soft enough to walk bare-foot.

I only stayed briefly overnight so I didn't have a chance to explore much of the area or amenities. The farm was clean and safe and a pleasant spot to stop for the night. Moe, is a fantastic host with a very nice spot to spend a night. Fish rising in the pond all evening and although on a traveled road, privacy and peace are here. Moe visited and even brought some veggies from her garden. Bring your own fire wood and enjoy the chiminea overlooking the pond. Cheers.

We had a wonderful stay on Alan’s land. The camp was well kept, with freshly laid wood chips. Alan’s stocked and wood and water was a big plus. The porta potty was immaculate. But most of all it was so quiet and private. That is until Abner, a neighborhood mule out of nowhere let out a crazy, unexpected bray which was actually pretty awesome; never heard anything like it.

Stayed labor day weekend with our dog. Nice quiet spot - off the road but still secluded enough. Site was large and includes fire-pit, picnic bench, and portapotty(clean with tp). 2 crates of firewood for 2 nights was plenty enough. There’s 2 state parks within a few min drive, I enjoyed natchuag more than Goodwin (the trails were too overgrown during this time). Overall a good experience- thank you Alan for the stay!

We had a great camping trip here! It was our toddler's first trip, and he can't stop talking about how fun it was. He loved visiting the animals and running up and down the trail. Our spot was private and easy to get to. I think if we did it again with him (and our absurdly giant tent) we would go with the Orchard site because it looked a little bigger, but we were very comfortable. Like any piece of woods in New England, it's not a bad thing to have poison ivy wipes with you, especially if you're with a tiny human who loves to disregard the paths. We loved having farm fresh eggs in the morning! We already recommended it to friends.

Camping out on Kelli's land is a treasure for sure. The warm whispers of the sunrise over her house and field with the early morning nickers of the horses is just what my body needed. The weather was perfect, there was a slight breeze and my dog children loved playing with her small pack. I will return again and again if my schedule allows! 1 night at Fernwood on Alan F.’s Land

This was our first Hipcamp experience and let me tell you, we couldn't have picked a better one. When we got to what looked like a dirt cattle trail, we stopped and asked a farmer if he knew Allen. "I do." And would you know where Fernwood 2 is? "I do. Drive another 50 feet and turn right." What a beautiful little spot. The cleanest, nicest smelling portable john I have ever seen. We plan to come south again next year and Fernwood 2 will be on our itinerary. Allen and his wife were gracious and very friendly.
