The Legend of Possum Hill is an old one. Most likely named thus even before the settlers arived in St. Louis. Before the great expansion west and before the Gateway Arch graced the sky. Wild was the west and animals roamed at will never having seen a man. The acient Indian tribe of Cahokia once had its own travelers who left their mounded cities of pyramids to explore and hunt for new adventure. It was on one of these travels a great storm arose from the spring sky bringing ice down from the heavens. The Indian party was hard pressed to find shelter from such turbulent winds, rain and it was even claimed they witnessed some snow blended in as well well! This particular spring the waters had risen quite high . With this latest storm the creeks and rivers were rushing over their banks. The Indians knew they had to find high ground. They knew they would only be safe in a shelter high enough the raging waters could not breach. Just when they were giving up hope for a suitable place they passed through a low lands grove treading through ankle deep waters when the land started to rise. And rise it did! Up they went up a steep climb and as they crested they found a large grove of hickories, Sycamore and Oak trees. The Indians prized such trees for their strong hard wood and towering hight. They found safety within them and upon chance several hollows in the ancient trees and quickly sheltered themselves in pairs. They weathered until the suns golden rays stretched accross the small pond. In one hollow a young Indian stirred and and he and his companion left their shelter. Reaching back into the tree they grabbed their packs and found hidden behind them, a family of possums who also hIad hid from the storm. Upon return to Cahokia the young Indian told of their travels and remembering the sheltering family of marsupials, he named the place in their honnor because they shared their shelter. I had a nice stay, but wanted to highlight I few things that weren't quite obvious to me before I got there!
The property is tucked into a neighborhood, so it's easy to navigate to, and I felt safe and secluded where I was and comfortable with my car being outside on the street overnight.
The SMARTEST and most courteous farm dog will come greet you and guide you, I felt like she had a guardian angel spirit and made sure I was safe and taken care of!
What I didn't realize — you'll be setting up camp IN the goat pasture, which means you'll be setting up your tent unavoidably on goat poop. Since I was packing my tent into my suitcase and flying out the next day, this wasn't totally ideal for my purposes. The goats were also pretty noisy all night, herding one way or another and being herded by the farm dog all through the night (felt like she was protecting me when the goats got nosy!), so I wouldn't describe the night as peaceful or restive haha.
Certainly memorable! I loved seeing the hens and roosters and ducks, too. Jeff was super communicative and it's well priced. Just think it's important to know what you're getting in for in case it's a bit more IN the farm than you were expecting!

Through the mulberry bushes, past the ducks, chickens, and roosters you'll be met by a dog at the gate, who will guide you to the persimmon grove. Here you will be able to set up camp with ideal views of the stars. The fire pit provided was perfect. Unzipping my tent in the morning and making eye contact with 20 goats was an experience. The views are incredible, hanging out with the goats and the dog in the morning is a memory I will cherish forever. 10/10 recommend.

Great spot to stay after our evening plans! We set up under a nice tree canopy and would have hammocked if it was a little cooler. The affordability was a huge win! There is a very bright streetlight (?) at the far end of the property that would have been annoying for a multi-night stay, but we just turned the tent and were fine. Host was super communicative and accommodating. Would definitely book again for a similar stay!

I camp with a roof top tent and it's great when you can park right at the site. Karmen verified with me before I arrived I could drive in. The property was awesome and very quiet. My site was in a little Grove of trees above the pond so I set up so I could lay in my tent and look out to a great view. I would definitely love to stay here again.

Karmen and Ron were super helpful and communicative. If you rent site 4, I would definitely recommend arriving before 8pm to have them show you the site as we got a little confused locating it ourselves. Ron arrived home just in time to help us!
