Built in 1860 by its first caretaker botanist, this homestead was propagated over its many years of life and is busting at the seams with medicinal and edible herbs. We now run a flower farm and vegetable gardens on our homestead. If you’d like to learn about herbs or gardening/ homesteading, we love sharing our knowledge.
If you’d just like some farm fresh eggs and enjoy your time alone amongst the songbirds, that's just fine too :)
The property is built into the stone hillside allowing for breathtaking views but also stairs to get to the campsites. Please wear comfortable shoes (not flip flops 😉). If you have mobility issues property access will be difficult. Please no children under 5.

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple.
We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. If you would like to bring a pet, please add the Pet Fee which is listed on the Extra during the booking process.
We have firewood available for sale, $5.55/bundle. This is located in the Extra section during the booking process.
Lastly, there is free range chicken eggs available for purchase, $3.50/dozen. This is also located in the Extra section during the booking process.

This property is a 150 year old working farm, which has seen six generations. We are happy to share a piece of land with you. Whether you are a first time or experienced camper wanting to sleep outdoors. We have the perfect spot for you to rest, relax, and recharge while camping under the stars surrounded by trees in a four acre wooded area located on a quiet country road within a vast working farm in the heart of Jo Daviess, County. Listen to the sounds of nature white spotting a variety of wildlife. Watch the sunrises, sunsets, comets, meteor showers, sometimes the northern lights, and the full moon rising over the hills. Watch the leaves turn color in autumn.
We offer three types of sites: basic Glamping, preset tent, and rustic. Check out the descriptions of the sites to see which site is for you. Limited sites - first come basis. We try to make each site as secluded as possible.. There are firewood stations throughout the sites with attached fire extinguisher. We are creating a gravel trek around the sites with two entrances and gravel parking planned be completed by 2028. We are working on flushable outhouses and possible showers. Children’s play area by 2027. There isn’t any swimming or fishing available on the farm property. There is a private lake three miles from the sites - see details under extras.
We are located ten miles from the Wisconsin border and villages with their unique shops and museums. 20 minutes from Galena, 45 minutes from the Mississippi River and Dubuque. Iowa. Three hours from Chicago. DNR - department of natural resources have properties a mile north of the farm with nice trails to walk near the Apple river, which is stocked twice a year for fishing tournaments. As well as the Boy Scout campgrounds located nearby. Locals have caught crayfish and swam in the Apple river, we are unfamiliar with current spots. People have tubed and canoed down the Apple river. There are numerous state parks within driving distance for hiking, sight seeing, eagle watching etc. Immerse yourself in the vast history of the area. Again we encourage you to come rest relax and recharge in this peaceful spot.

We have a main farm down the road that if you would like to visit, we can try setting that up so you can see the animals if you would like.
Please note that the cabin has a porta potty outside. The cabin does not have electricity, but an extension cord can be brought and plugged into the outdoor electric outlet. With pets
I had a great time staying in the pod on Nance’s land with my dog. She was a great host! It’s behind the barn and in its own area. Other campers were there and I didn’t hear them. I had a campfire under the trees where I could look up at the fire and see the stars. It was fun to explore on her land. I meditated on one of the two platforms in the open field area. Very calming listening to nature. The barn was nice to use her burners to make coffee and she has refrigerators in there to store food.

We really enjoyed staying at Joan’s and jean’s! The farmhouse has everything you need games, basketball, a full stocked kitchen! We enjoyed being in a rural area and looking at the stars. Joan and Jean were super nice and helpful with everything. We enjoyed seeing the cows so close! And teddy the dog who hanged out with us and was super friendly and adorable 🥰

Weekend Trip to 1860's Botanical Homestead
Amazing little place to stay- private little sitting area with firepit, small frog pond, and room for tent camping right up the hill for bigger get togethers. Lovely big windows looking out on the sitting area, and nice outdoor shower. We are recommending to friends already!

We loved our stay at this peaceful countryside ranch! The setting was absolutely gorgeous, with rolling fields and farm animals adding to the charm. We loved staying in The Bunkie! We visited with our dog and we all enjoyed our stay. The property is gorgeous and the room is cozy and clean. We enjoyed the outdoor seating areas also. We even took quick showers in the outdoor shower and found it to do the trick! We LOVED the tea from the owner and had everything we needed for our stay. It was hot outside while there but the room stayed comfortable the whole time. It also rained and we loved listening to the rain. It was a lovely stay!

Weekend Trip to 1860's Botanical Homestead
Spent my birthday weekend here with my chosen family (husband, best friends, and thier kids) and we had the tent site and the bunkie.
The site was perfect. It was a little uneven as explained in the description but for it having to be cut into the hill we were impressed with how flat it was. Even with it raining alot it didnt get alot of pooling water. The tree cover was great so even when it got heavy we were still able to walk to the cars or the bathroom without getting soaked.
The bunkie was clean and very comfortable and had a ton of things that people might forget like garbage bags and flashlights
There are alot of stairs and they are handmade so you have to be careful but I appreciated that thier were handrails pretty much everywhere.
The property is beautiful. I loved seeing all of the plants. Im a forager so I loved juat walking through and identifying the different plants. They had rented goats to clear alot of the brush on the hill and we got to watch them the first night while they were working which was awesome to see.
Jessica is an amazing host and was super sweet with the kids. She let them help her feed them and check for eggs and showed them all the art and work she does.
Also, I've never used a porta potty that smelled that good before and showering in the outdoor shower surrounded by nature was honestly magical. 100/10 will come again.

2 nights at 1860's Botanical Homestead
I stayed in the “bunky.” A lovely room with lots of natural light and a sweet little area to sit and enjoy tea or the birds. Jessica was a welcoming host, she even made me strawberry tea and lent me a cooler since I had forgotten mine. Even on a 90 degree day, the room stayed cool with the fans going and windows allowing for a cross breeze.

Weekend Trip to RidgeRiverView Acres
We loved Jims Cozy Cabin. Jim was super laid back. This was a perfect place for me, my husband and our two pups. We stayed only two nights but could have stayed longer. Our pups loved exploring the farm and I loved floating in the pond with our neighbor. Whom stayed in the beautiful canvas tent on the other side of the pond. It was very secluded with all the amenities you'll need. He offered to help with our fire and he blew up floats for us. He even offered us fresh veggies from his garden. The cabin was very clean and cute. A/C worked great and was much needed. Cabin was only an hour away from Galena IL and 30 min from Dubuque IW both towns have great shopping, bars and restaurants. But if you're just looking to get away from the city and see the stars this place is where you need to be. We loved sitting on the dock at night looking at the stars. You can tell Jim spent a lot of hard work on his property to make it beautiful with all the flowers and hanging lights everywhere even around the lake. When we left we couldn't thank Jim enough. We will be back.

Super great experience. I stayed in Bunkie. There is no AC BUT a nice fan and windows that open. I was there during the heat advisory and was comfortable.
Fresh coffe made by the host, Jessica. Get some eggs while you are there as they are amazing. Would definitely stay again.

This was our first time glamping in the trailer after previously camping in tents on the property, and it completely exceeded our expectations. The trailer was cozy, clean, and well-stocked with everything we needed - from kitchen essentials to bedding - which made our stay super relaxing and stress-free. The setting is just as beautiful as I remember: peaceful, private, and surrounded by nature. It's the perfect blend of outdoorsy charm and comfort. Easy drive to Galena for shopping and exploring. Hours of fun at the campground for the kids. Fun pond to swim in. You can really feel the love and care the hosts put into this place. We'll definitely be back!

The Bunkie was comfortable and cozy with beautiful views of ferns and cedars! The path to the outside was well lit at night, and the new outdoor shower had great hot water and pressure! I loved touring Jessica’s gardens and learning more about how she preserves and uses plants in her apothecary and soap making too! Jessica is kind, hospitable, and generous with her time and resources and made me feel at home. You can tell how much time and care she and her family put into the homestead.
