We started our Homestead over 7 years ago on a Level 3 lava zone, knowing it is some of the newest land on the plant. Leaving much of the Natural topography intact, and clearing by hand while introducing many tropical varieties of vegetation to the land has given us a glimpse into nature completely unexpected! We're located on a 3 acre homestead between Volcano National Parks, Historic Pahoa town, and Hilo in a peaceful Ohi'a forest. Our land is home to 100's of plant varieties from exotic fruits like Cacao and Pineapple, to dozens of orchid varieties and other tropical flora. We have worked hand-in-hand with the land to create a biophilic experience in hopes of offering our guests an inspirational and energizing experience The spaceWe started our Homestead over 7 years ago on a lava 3 zone in an O'hia forest. This has given us a glimpse into Nature's hidden biognosis... And what beautiful wisdom it has revealed which we would like to share now with you our guests :) We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!! Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems. Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :) We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana. We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!! Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway. Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

Rainforest Haven is located in Fern Forest, a rural neighborhood, on three verdant acres of rainforest with ōhiʻa lehua trees, tree ferns, banana plants, and fruit trees at 2100 feet. This is a peaceful place to relax and recuperate from the din of city life—quiet hours are from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. There are no street lights, just the stars and moon after sunset. Waipi'o Lodge and Campsite is located in Kukuihaele less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors stop to talk and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy a wonderful ocean view and the many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We usually have perfect weather- sunshine, blue skies, a nice breeze, with temperatures in the high 70's. The campsite is part of the Waipi'o Lodge, which has three bedrooms and a common space living room. Our camping guests are welcome to use the outside kitchen, covered lanai, and Lodge bathroom. We have a professionally built outhouse style Humanure Composting toilet. We are less than 200 feet from the paved road so any vehicle will be able to drive straight onto the land. Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems. Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :) We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana. We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!! Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island! There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks. Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups. It is about a 30-40 minute drive from us 🌊 ☀️ 🌋 We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. So far we have about 25 fruit trees growing along with a vegetable bed, herbs, and numerous flowers and ornamentals. Guests are welcome to any food growing that is ready to harvest. Incredible amounts of love has been poured into this land and there's an infinite amount more to come. We are located within a 20-25 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park. This is an ideal site for car campers and vanlifers. You are welcome to bring your own tent and pitch it anywhere on the open grass area as well. We have an outdoor kitchen with a 2 burner stove, fridge, copper drinking water container, and a 250 gallon water tank for washing dishes. We have a professionally built outhouse style Humanure Composting toilet. We are less than 200 feet from the paved road so any vehicle will be able to drive straight onto the land. The land is located in a very safe part of the neighborhood with great neighbors closeby (but not too close)!

We got in late and had to leave early, but the facilities we used (shower, bathroom) were wonderful. The groundskeeper was very kind and helpful, and the property is well attended to. Directions were well written. Would absolutely stay here again and get to enjoy it for longer.

We had a great time here, especially enjoying the hot tub and campfires we made. With the loss of Isaac Hale campground there aren’t many options for public campgrounds anywhere nearby so this hipcamp was a great option for touring around the 2018 lava flows and Puna area beaches. The directions were easy to follow and the potholes in the access road easy enough to navigate in any car. Campsites flat but soil in this area is lava rock under the grass so tent pegs a bit hard to get in. Only one bathroom could be a problem at times but it worked out ok. We would recommend and return again.

Christopher & Esther were such lovely & attentive hosts. They have a thoughtful set-up with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable night's stay, and the cabin feels very private. The view is lovely, surrounded by painted Eucalyptus. They have a small flat area for a tent site nearby which was lovely to stretch on beneath the trees. The ducks and peahens were so entertaining - they truly run the place! To boot this place is close to the Park & some quick food stops. The stars at night were so bright. I would love to stay here again for longer.

This place was amazing!! I wish I could have stayed longer. The view was unbelievable, it stretched out for so long and was just stunning. The stars and the sound of the frogs at night were so beautiful and soothed us to sleep. The site itself was very well maintained, with a mosquito net that kept out bugs and made the bed feel extra cozy. The bathroom is a little bit of a walk, but well worth it for the convenience of a clean toilet and sink and a hot outdoor shower! There was even a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker! This site is in a great location and felt super secure, with two gates to get onto the property and latches on the doors. It’s just a few minutes away from some super cute cafes and shops, and Akaka falls is also nearby. We were also delighted to see the resident donkeys and cats :). Overall, this place is incredible and I would definitely recommend staying here if you’re looking for a place close to Hilo!

Wow! Easily the best hipcamp I have been to. Directions provided were easy to follow, even after sunset. The accomodation was so cozy and the view was amazing. The outdoor shower and shared bathroom area was so cute and clean! It was amazing to have a hot outdoor shower at night and stare at the stars at the same time. I also loved all the animals we saw in the area, including but not limited to cats and donkeys on-site.

Hamakua House gave us a very genuine feeling taste of the Hawaiian aloha experience. I'm not going to lie, it started tough, as we arrived to our Cabana just as the skies opened with a torment of wind and rain, which quickly made it clear that the aging tent enclosure system for our Cabana could no longer keep the elements out. However, this dismaying set of circumstances was greeted by immediate, kind and resourceful response from the managers on staff, with special thanks to Lisa and Morgan who really took us under their wing. The following 5 days we spent using Hamakua House as our base filled with fun adventures, many of them sparked from conversation and recommendations from among staff and fellow guests. The community at this place is so beautiful: a lovely aura of sharing food and stories, along with vulnerabilities and magic. I'm very appreciative to the owner for providing the affordable and to my mind far superior way of experiencing Hawaii through glamping as opposed to some disconnected condo. Mahalo to Hamakua House for sharing the Breath of God with us.

Like the other reviews say, this is a great spot to camp. The yard is super well kept, flat site, full bathroom access. It poured while we were there which made the hot tub a nice treat. View of the waves crashing is amazing. It's quiet and peaceful. Host was happy to share his knowledge about the botanicals, fruit trees and land. Can pick ripe fruit and dogs are friendly.

What a wonderful place to stay over in Hilo. We were on a camping trip and having a spot with lots of covered areas and amenities for not much more than the price of a county park campsite was so appreciated. We had pretty torrential rains during our stay and made the most of the covered kitchen and TV area during the evening. The hosts were helpful in recommending the least-wet area to pitch our tent and we were grateful to be able to do laundry. So close to some of the best beaches in Hilo, too! Would definitely stay again.

Just had an incredible getaway at Mae's property, and I can't say enough about her attentiveness! It was wonderful to chat with her and hear about her passion for creating a welcoming space. She should truly be proud of the amazing amenities she's provided for her guests! We camped on top of a Toyota FJ, but I can assure you that tent campers would feel just as at home. 🌲 🌼 Highlights of the stay: Clean bathroom and hot shower 🚿Cozy cooking area 🍳Peaceful pond and lush fruit trees 🍑Friendly farm animals and her adorable dog, Knobs! 🐶This place is a true gem for anyone looking to escape into nature! I had the greatest time here, it will be hard to summarize! Justine is an excellent communicator and I had no trouble finding my way to her place and around the campsite. As a host, she is generous and welcoming–sharing tips and travel suggestions, and just being warm and easy to talk to. The space is well thought-out and had everything I needed to camp out of my small tent (I had my own camp stove, so didn't use the outdoor kitchen, but made good use of the picnic table area, electricity and outdoor shower.) I really appreciated the farm tour, tasting some of the land's treats and being able to feed the chickens my food scraps. I added on a breakfast which was deliciously made with local ingredients, and wish I could have extended my trip to stay longer. As a solo female traveller, I felt very safe camping here. Overall: great location, good deal for what you get, and best host!
