Our property is in a secluded neighborhood, a 4.2 mile drive in from the main road (Highway 11). The drive in or out should take about 10-15 minutes. Volcano National Park is 19 miles from our home and will take about 30 minutes to drive. We are 18 miles from Hilo Farmers Market/downtown Hilo and again should take about 30 minutes. Pahoa area is 20 miles from us and just past a 30 minute drive. Tour the island during the day and come back to a spacious, private courtyard campsite where you can experience the beauty and sounds of our forest sanctuary.

Mauna Loa Camp is about 20 minutes from Hilo on "The Big Island" (Hawaii) in the Hawaiian Acres neighborhood. The actual address is 16-1648 Ooaa Rd. (Road #6), Kurtistown, HI 96760. It’s a 3-acre parcel that’s entirely fenced, with wide open areas to set up wherever you like.
We planted lots of fruit trees in 2025 and 2026, and we expect to harvest fruit in 1–3 years. The air is fresh, and the stars are amazing — like I’ve never seen before. I also love the Coqui Frog songs at night.
This location is ideal for taking day trips anywhere on the island (about 2 hours to Kona). The waterfront in Hilo is unique, with calm pools of water set well inland from the ocean. Wild orchids and flowers grow at the camp.
You can pick wild strawberry guava or hit the local markets for incredible fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan, soursop, oranges, tangerines, avocado, starfruit, lemon, macadamia nuts, pineapple, and banana. All of these are available at markets when in season, and in a few years, some can be picked right at Mauna Loa Camp (perhaps by 2028).
I live in the Rochester, NY area and we operate four camps in NY, one in SC, and one in FL. Our sites are rustic — no electricity, no water — just you and nature. We provide portable toilets and/or a porta-potty, and there is a public shower at a park in Hilo. Our goal is to keep our camps simple and in harmony with nature.
We expect respect for our land and neighbors, with absolutely zero trash left behind (carry in, carry out). You will love it — everyone does. Hawaii is a special place, and we feel so lucky to be part of it!
We rent to only one group at a time, ensuring total privacy. My friends and neighbors in the area are wonderful assets, making it a lovely place to be one with our planet and nature.

This is an ideal site for car campers and vanlifers. You are welcome to bring your own tent and pitch it anywhere on the open grass area as well.
We have an outdoor kitchen with a 2 burner stove, fridge, copper drinking water container, and a 250 gallon water tank for washing dishes. We have a professionally built outhouse style Humanure Composting toilet.
We are less than 200 feet from the paved road so any vehicle will be able to drive straight onto the land. The land is located in a very safe part of the neighborhood with great neighbors closeby (but not too close)!

Hipcamp’s best, most temperate, comfortable weather on the island. Parking is available outside the gate, with additional space inside a locked double-wide gate for secure access. Room for a van, truck, RV, or car (no hookups). A few extra spots may be available if you need multiple—just let me know. The property sits under a canopy of rainbow eucalyptus on 3 quiet acres, backed by a Hawaiian reserve.
The cabin is a tranquil 2-bedroom, semi–open-air space with a loft. The loft is accessed by small stairs and is not disability accessible. The other sleeping area is open with new flooring—please bring a sleep pad. There is no bed at this time. An attached open-air kitchen area includes water collection and basic food utensils.
Message me with any needs or questions, and I’ll do my best to help. There’s also a solar setup you can connect to if you have a solar generator. The food forest and garden areas are young and still establishing. If you hike, stay aware of your surroundings—there are lava tubes and uneven drops. The trails are safe if you choose to explore.
You’ll also find the biggest ʻōhiʻa I’ve ever seen near the corner of the cabin. I value respect and privacy, and you can count on that from me. If you happen to notice my security camera, it is not active. While you’re here, it’s your place—your liberty and peace matter most. Make yourself at home and enjoy.

Hipcamp’s best, most temperate, comfortable weather on the island. Parking is available outside the gate, with additional space inside a locked double-wide gate for secure access. Room for a van, truck, RV, or car (no hookups). A few extra spots may be available if you need multiple—just let me know. The property sits under a canopy of rainbow eucalyptus on 3 quiet acres, backed by a Hawaiian reserve.
The cabin is a tranquil 2-bedroom, semi–open-air space with a loft. The loft is accessed by small stairs and is not disability accessible. The other sleeping area is open with new flooring—please bring a sleep pad. There is no bed at this time. An attached open-air kitchen area includes water collection and basic food utensils.
Message me with any needs or questions, and I’ll do my best to help. There’s also a solar setup you can connect to if you have a solar generator. The food forest and garden areas are young and still establishing. If you hike, stay aware of your surroundings—there are lava tubes and uneven drops. The trails are safe if you choose to explore.
You’ll also find the biggest ʻōhiʻa I’ve ever seen near the corner of the cabin. I value respect and privacy, and you can count on that from me. If you happen to notice my security camera, it is not active. While you’re here, it’s your place—your liberty and peace matter most. Make yourself at home and enjoy.

That being said you will hear the rustle of palm leaves, tropical birds and coqui frogs at night. The setting is truly beautiful and nurturing with a spacious lawn, fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, caressing breezes and even frequent rainbows. There is a deep sense of peace here.
Our home is centrally located in lower Puna.

We have a hidden exotic fruit orchard tucked away through rolling green hills, perched over the Hamakua cliffs, overlooking the pacific.
We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 10-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold.
We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. Meet peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.

Step outside and you’re immersed in a living classroom of native flora, lava tubes, fruit orchards, and starlit skies. Wander trails through macnut groves, sip fresh coconut water under the monkeypod tree, or pick fruit straight from the trees—mango, banana, lilikoi, citrus, and more. Kids love the three-level treehouse, and families enjoy meeting our friendly farm animals: horses, cows, and farm dogs.
At night, the Kaʻū Desert transforms into one of the darkest skies in the world. With no city lights for miles, stargazing is beyond incredible. Lay back with a blanket and marvel at the Milky Way, constellations, and even passing satellites or meteor showers.
Our farm is rooted in Hawaiian values of sustainability, ʻohana (family), and aloha ʻāina (love for the land). We had a great time here, especially enjoying the hot tub and campfires we made. With the loss of Isaac Hale campground there aren’t many options for public campgrounds anywhere nearby so this hipcamp was a great option for touring around the 2018 lava flows and Puna area beaches. The directions were easy to follow and the potholes in the access road easy enough to navigate in any car. Campsites flat but soil in this area is lava rock under the grass so tent pegs a bit hard to get in. Only one bathroom could be a problem at times but it worked out ok. We would recommend and return again.

Like the other reviews say, this is a great spot to camp. The yard is super well kept, flat site, full bathroom access. It poured while we were there which made the hot tub a nice treat. View of the waves crashing is amazing. It's quiet and peaceful. Host was happy to share his knowledge about the botanicals, fruit trees and land. Can pick ripe fruit and dogs are friendly.

Just had an incredible getaway at Mae's property, and I can't say enough about her attentiveness! It was wonderful to chat with her and hear about her passion for creating a welcoming space. She should truly be proud of the amazing amenities she's provided for her guests! GREAT STAY! Shawn is a great host, attentive & friendly! We loved having fresh coconut delivered everyday & the scenery was paradise! The location is great, central to lots of different sights to see! We explored the volcanoes, sea view was a really cool drive, Hilo nearby waterfalls. There was never a shortage of things to do! The nearby Sunday Maku’u market was HUGE!
This was such a nice place to come home to every night & enjoy a campfire & star gazing.

I can’t say enough about this little piece of heaven, it is absolutely stunning, breathtaking. Blaze and Shawn were very friendly and quick to answer any questions. The bathroom facilities were clean uncomfortable, better than expected when camping. The fruit trees are beautiful, no need to buy limes for our cocktails as they were growing beside us! They have several dogs who run the property and are friendly. Our first night there we saw whales and turtles off the cliffs! Beautiful pool, relaxing atmosphere, quiet, serene, MAGICAL❤️

Blaiz brother Sean is very accommodating We came in late he made sure to get a settled. He was accommodating to our little dogs.
Beautifully landscaped oceanfront with a saltwater pool in jacuzzi.
Clean, well kept. They also accommodated the fact that we had to reschedule due to business related circumstances.

This is an awesome spot! I think this is exactly what a hip camp should be: feels remote, special, private, and very comfortable. Mae has you covered in so many ways. We arrived at the end of a light rain shower, and were so happy to find a covered set of table and chairs under her dome that were bone dry! The place is right off 11, which gets you to Hilo or the National Park. A nice hot outdoor shower with a view of the ocean! Can't get much better than that to start your day.

The space as great! It had a wonderful view with very level and soft ground for our tents. The indoor bathroom was awesome. However my advice would be to bring your own water, it had a bit of a tangy taste was totally fine to drink. Highly, highly recommend!

We really enjoyed this spot and it worked great for our travels around this side of the island. Having access to the pool/hot tub, flushing toilet/shower, and the amazing cliff side view made this a top notch spot for us. We stayed in our camper van which worked great for the area we were given. Loved the pups and their greeting each time. We didn't see much of other guests or the hosts which was fine by us. If you wanted to, I am sure you could engage more but we really just cooked dinner and slept at this spot and didn't spend much of our days there so not a lot of opportunity to interact. We didn't ever use the potable water on the site so can't comment on that and we didn't connect to the wifi. Otherwise, the only other comment is that our van did fine on the road in as long as we drove slow but a truck had slid off and gotten stuck one evening in the rain. So be sure to take it slow and stay on the middle of the road as much as possible I guess.
