This is a breathtaking space that our family has poured many decades and multiple generations into. We are surrounded by jungle, with a freshwater stream running through the entire property and unobstructed mountain views. If you’re especially sensitive to mosquitos, bugs, geckos, free roaming chickens or other elements to be expected in nature, this might not be the place for you.
Waimanalo is a small agricultural town filled with nurseries, horse stables, and a high concentration of Hawaiian homes. It remains mostly undeveloped and authentic, and we aim to keep it that way. Outsiders do not often get the opportunity to stay back here, but we welcome respectful travelers looking for an authentic experience who can appreciate this privilege.
While nestled against the mountains, we're just a five minute drive from the beach. We are fifteen minutes from Kailua town, where you'll find several grocery stores, shops, and restaurants.
This is a working farm. While we are very hospitable, we are not in the business of hospitality. I am happy to accommodate travelers, but I am not here at your beck and call. If that is the experience you are seeking, I think you would be happier elsewhere. We appreciate all of your bookings, and profits go directly back into farm infrastructure and new fruit trees. Camper Vans or RVs are more than welcome! During the day, enjoy access to a private river where you can take your fishing pole and catch yourself some dinner. After a busy day, enjoy a nice hot bath in a private shower under the stars, along with a flushing toilet and sink. Upon request and additional charge, end your adventure with a cozy night next to the fire pit ($28.00 for fire pit). Mangrove Lounge is 3-5 minutes (driving) away from many beaches and eateries in Haleiwa town where you can also do all your shopping. Less than a mile away, you can find all the delicious food trucks including the famous Giovanni Shrimp Truck. You can find your nearest supermarket just 1.2 miles away called Malama Market, and Longs Drug Store right across the street from Malama Market. Mangrove Lounge provides clean bathroom, a shower with hot water, access to a private river for relaxing or fishing, about 800ft from the nearest bus stop, and secured privacy so you and your friends or family can relax, feel safe, and most importantly...have fun! 😊

We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 11-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold.
We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. We have peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.
Our current camp sites are not in the fruit orchard, but in a rolling hills open pasture land near the fruit stand. It is rustic and pastoral.
We are a community of a few passionate farmers and fruit lovers. There’s a family- myself Rose, my partner Matthew and our daughter Mela, plus several awesome guys and girls who help out in different areas to grow our lives together!

This is a working farm and shared living environment. Guests stay in a small collection of rustic cabins, with access to communal spaces designed to support simple, off-grid living. While individual accommodations vary, all guests share a connection to the land, the waterfall, and the rhythms of farm life.
At the heart of the property is our communal barn, which includes a shared kitchen, dining area, and lounge space with panoramic views. Nearby are shared bathrooms with flush toilets and outdoor hot-water showers. These facilities are used by guests and members of our on-site community.
Kulaniapia is intentionally off the grid. Expect dirt roads, uneven paths, wildlife, farm animals, insects, frogs, and nighttime sounds of the rainforest. Electricity is limited in some areas, and this is not a hotel or resort experience. Guests who enjoy nature, simplicity, and a sense of place tend to thrive here.
In addition to the waterfall swimming areas, guests may have the opportunity to join optional experiences such as farm tours, community potlucks, chef-hosted dinners, or guided adventures like waterfall rappelling, farm tours and cooking classes. Availability varies and some experiences require advance booking.
Despite the feeling of remoteness, we are located just 15 minutes from Hilo town, making it easy to balance time on the land with access to stores, restaurants, and supplies.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a little over an hour drive and the Maunakea Visitors Center is an hour and 15 minutes. Other sites and adventures include Umauma Zip lining and Botanical World Adventures (5 miles away), Onomea Bay scenic drive and Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden (8 miles away), the historic town of Honokaa (45 mins), and the beautiful cowboy town of Waimea (1 hour).
Hakalau Springs Campground sits on 11 acres with two springs bordering the property with a variety of fruit trees and farm animals to interact with.
We offer basic campsites with picnic tables, drinking water, a fire pit, a composting toilet, and a pop-up tent in case it rains. You will be camping on soft grass amongst giant Ironwood and eucalyptus trees while listening to the soft sounds of the creek below. Take a swim in the spring-fed waterfall swimming hole and relax by the fire pit at night.
We also offer our beautiful 2 room tent fully furnished with a queen-sized air mattress, cozy bedding, lantern, and camping lounge chairs. Cooler upon request, you provide the ice.
We’re blessed to be located on the rainy side of the island because of all the abundance and greenery the rain brings. That being said, please be prepared for the weather. It can rain hard at times so having a good rain jacket is a great idea. On the other hand, people say that a sunny day on the east side of the big island is the best place to be in all of Hawaii.

A SUV or jeep is an ideal choice when staying here as the last 500 feet (1 minute of drive time) of the drive is off-road and quite rocky. You will transverse your private entrance passing the Cassandra's (the host's) tiny house. When you arrive you will be greeted by the serene beauty of the jungle. While is isn't 100% private as the host lives next door, we can still promise a peaceful escape from the everyday world. We recommend stopping for snacks in Hilo or Keaau on the way up as those towns have more options than the sleepy Volcano Village.
Important Considerations Before Booking:
As luxurious and adventurous as Inn a Volcano is, staying in an off-grid volcano dome home in the Hawaiian jungle comes with expected 'challenges.' My goal is to give you an experience that combines Tarzan's hideout with a 5-star experience so lets get you prepped!
1. Water Source
•The tap water comes from rain catchment. It is not potable (not for drinking.) We will provide drinking water.
2. Electricity
•We're solar-powered, so please conserve energy. High voltage items like hair dryers or irons are not provided. If you bring these and use them there is a chance that the power will shut off. Please shut off lights when you leave. The windows and a skylight allows ample natural light during the day.
3. Weather

A1 spot to visit and camp. Beautiful property, easy access and secure location. Bathroom and shower were private and clean. Host Kaui was so nice, helpful, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Will visit again fasho.

stayed in a tent site. There are four spots all in the same area, kind of like a square parking lot. You basically get a corner. It was fine for us , but if your expecting some remote lush Hawaiian site - this is not it. It's extreme utility. Clean flushing toilet, shower and zero contact with host. Directions in guide were great, and honestly it was exactly what we needed. Location is really quite good for food and beaches. Just a place to pitch tent that was safe, and no fines. Really appreciate them offering up the land for use, because Oahu is not a cheap place to visit. The island needs more of these spots. Thank you Dave and Lex!

3 nights at Waimanalo Farmstay
We had an amazing 3 night stay in the private tent with its own bathroom.
Hot water, wifi and a cook top made the stay extremely comfortable. There are a few cooking utensils but not much.
The hosts were very communicative when we reached out however we didn’t need to contact them . Very private, quiet and peaceful! We want to stay for longer next trip!!

From the moment we got there the beauty took our breath away. The yurt was wonderful. Bathroom and showers all complimented our stay. Even if it was glamping it still is really camping so if you are looking for luxury please don't go and ruin this experience for anyone by leaving a bad review because you expected pristine. My friends and I bonded and connected and had conversations in this beautiful peaceful place. There was a stream near by that you could dip in if the water flow is good enough. Sitting in the stream and taking in the fresh water and the view was magical. I can't wait to go back with my family. When they saw the pictures I took there with my girlfriends my family immediately said they want to go there. I will most def return Nohomai! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this experience. I was sad to leave but let me tell you. Being there and facing my crazy work week helped me to stay centered.

I loved camping at Mae's place. We felt like we were camping in a botanical garden. Great facilities with shelter from rain and a very clean and cozy house with a bathroom and showers. Views are stunning, and its a 20 mins drive to Volcanoes National Park, which is a bonus. Mae is fantastic host; she was super quick to get us anything we needed and she really takes care of her guests. I wish there were more hosts like her out there. There is a pond with fish as well, and Mae has a great welcoming dog, which is great to have around as no wild animals intrude the campsite. On site, there are a also a volleyball net, freezebees, and other games for guests to enjoy. The sunrise site has better views, but is less shaded in the morning. I highly recommend this location.

While the sunrise over the Koolau Range was gorgeous, the vegetation lush, and the atmosphere delightfully quiet, the experience was dampened by strict and misleading rules. Despite being named a "farmstay," you are strictly confined to designated camping area with no wandering allowed, and the ground is so brutally hard you’ll need a hammer for your tent stakes—even with a plush, off-limits lawn right next to it. Furthering, there is only one combined shower and toilet for five sites (potentially 10+ people). No toilet access if someone takes a longer shower. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of farm hospitality or fruit tasting - the bananas are just rotting away next to the campground.

A special place to camp! Camping on land cared for by a Hawaiian family since the 1800s. The grass lawn was lush, soft, and thick—perfect for a tent. Host Michael let us sample fresh guava, mango, and star fruit right off the trees. Keep in mind that the amenities are very basic, with storage items around, but the natural setting make for a memorable trip.

Gorgeous setting, just be aware that the tops of the mountains are often clouded. The shower was very nice and the campsites are clear and flat. Nice sheltered area and functional sink for washing right next to the sites. Getting there can be a little tricky, make sure to sort this out ahead of time. The guide Lex and Dave send you is really helpful. They were great hosts.
