Red Mombin, and thousands of banana plants. Fishing can be great, wildlife and bird watching too. Fenced and gated for safety, this old historic nursery property has good vibes and plenty to offer. Until you see it - you really may not understand. Parts of property are wide open, other areas are rugged and difficult to walk through including some wetland areas. The nursery has plenty of trees, and some fields -the large pond is surrounded by cattails and marsh/wetlands and has fish (Bass, Tilapia, Sunfish, Catfish). My dog Marty and I had an awesome stay at Shell Creek—it’s truly a touch of old Florida! The campground sits right on a beautiful freshwater creek, and the peaceful setting made it easy to relax and enjoy nature. We stayed at Creekside Site B, which had a great view and plenty of shade.The hosts were fantastic—welcoming, helpful, and made sure everything was just right. It’s a place that feels genuine, quiet, and full of that classic Florida charm. I’ll definitely be recommending Shell Creek to friends, and Marty and I will be back for sure!

On top of being right next to the creek and a clean camp site, you don't get the typical 100 spot camp grounds vibe where you see the next 5 camp site next to you at site #2. Also the clothing optional is hella cool. 💁 lastly as a queer couple we get nervous camping in FL, but felt safe the entire stay here.

My group of four people and three dogs went tent camping for 4 days over thanksgiving break. We including the dogs had an amazing time! We got to rent canoes and go up and down the river. We found so many shark teeth and after we rented the 4wheelers got to ride all the trails around the camp. April and Kendal were very responsive and kind they helped with anything we needed. The camp farm animals and dogs were a great addition we adored them the outdoor kitchen and very hot showers were amazing too it was an all around great trip!!!

John's property is very nice. We had a great time with our family. The facilities were comfortable though we didn't take showers. We were able to get firewood from John each night for our fire. Our kids had a great time with the short hike to see a camel, Highland cattle and an alpaca that live on a neighbor's farm.

We rented two spots for our RVs and had an amazing time!!! Very private and well maintained. April who was overseeing the property was very observant and dedicated to her job. We loved all the animals and the dog friendly atmosphere of the entire place! We would 100% recommend and we will absolutely be back.

Pleasant stay. Close to town, but still feels remote. Spot 7 was fine for a smaller camper, but if I did it again, I would choose spot 8 ( bit more room). The pond was beautiful, but difficult to see from all the growth. The location is near the interstate, but the traffic noise was surprisingly minimal. If you like old time florida citrus farms, this is your spot.

Loved it here. Clean, cozy, and the canoe ride this morning was heavenly. I’ve been wanting to come here for awhile and it didn’t disappoint one bit. I’ll be back soon. Thanks to the awesome staff for being so attentive and always answering any questions I may have.

It’s a GREAT little get away spot without the hassle of trying to find an open camp sight at one of the bigger state parks. The owners are very responsive and very personable. Would 10/10 recommend for anyone looking for a way to get away from their everyday drama.

Where to go

Sarasota Area

Lido Key is one of Sarasota’s best beach areas, with a sprawling public stretch of sand and the South Lido Key Beach Park, where campers can go kayaking or paddleboarding through mangrove tunnels to spot manatee. Boat rentals and fishing charters are available throughout the area for anglers looking to land snook, snapper, grouper, and sea trout.

Siesta Key

To the south, Siesta Key has eight miles of sandy beaches to explore, plus Sarasota County’s public Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key, home to a number of tent sites with picnic tables beneath the palms. RV sites also come with full hookups, 50-amp power, and free wifi for RVers with big rigs. Between May and October, loggerhead and green sea turtles come to this beach to nest.

Oscar Scherer State Park

Just 20 minutes from downtown toward Venice, Oscar Scherer State Park is a critical wildlife preserve for species like scrub jay, bald eagles, and osprey. The park features an extensive trail system, a freshwater lake with boat launch, and a campground for both tent campsites and RV camping.

Myakka River State Park

Myakka River State Park is 37,000 acres of wild Florida pine forests, cypress domes, marshes, and prairie. Hit the hiking and mountain biking trails, or look out for the park’s biggest draw: its large population of American alligators. Get up close with a kayak rental or guided boat tour.

When to go

Sarasota’s winters are typically warm and mild, while summers are hot, humid, and rainy. Happy camping trips take place year-round, but summer visitors may want to opt for a pet-friendly cabin, an RV resort, or a campground with an air-conditioned clubhouse and good rain shelter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, so campers planning trips along the Gulf Coast during this time should keep an eye on forecasts.
