1 night at The Red Barn

This place is a hidden gem. Andrew has thought of everything to make this place comfortable. I stayed in Tent site C, the red barn, and used it mostly as my charging station and lounge area. I pitched my tent right next to it. The grounds are well lit, shower was hot and toilet clean. It was perfect for my stay with my dog. I recommend downloading the app Merlin Bird ID to name the morning choir of birds in the area. It was a peaceful stay. We will definitely be back.

Wow! What an experience! From the moment we arrived, everything felt so thoughtful and beautifully maintained. The grounds were pristine, and you could tell so much love and care goes into keeping this place special. The bathhouse blew us away—it was such a treat to have a full bathroom while camping! The cook shack was another awesome touch. Having a real sink to clean after cooking made our experience feel both rustic and fancy. We stayed at the primitive hike-in Site 8, and WOW—what a gem. Tucked away on a creekside cliff, it felt like our own private hideaway in the woods. Amanda, our host, recommended bringing a cart for the hike in, and I’m so glad she did—it made setting up camp a breeze. The site itself had everything we needed: solar lights, a fire pit with a cooking grate, a trash can, and a picnic table, with tons of room for our tents and gear. Our two boys spent the entire weekend playing in the creek, which might just be the dreamiest spot we’ve ever seen. We loved being able to float down the water, hike along the property, and just let the kids be wild and free while still having everything we needed close by. Amanda was such a lovely and thoughtful host. She checked in to make sure we were all set and even passed by while floating the creek herself! That little moment summed up the whole weekend-fun, relaxing, and full of heart. We’re so grateful for this experience and can’t wait to come back. Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven!

I almost don't want to review our stay here because we want it all to ourselves! Amanda is a fantastic host, and her property is everything we were looking for. Peaceful, quiet, beautiful beach on the creek. We're already making plans to come back.

The boondocking site was just the right fit for that leg of my travels. Self contained toyhauler and Chihuahua mix. Once the door closed maybe if semi drove past may I have heard it. Host's were talkative quite pleasant and informative. Stay again, sure would.

3 nights at Gateway Trails

This was my second trip to Gateway Trails, first was a solo trip and this time, friends came to enjoy! This site was new to me but was equally wonderful. The campsite was so spacious and yet private and protected, we felt perfectly safe walking around at any time of the day or evening. The site-mentioned outhouse was pristine upon arrival, our purchased firewood was stacked so carefully by the perimeter of our site so it wouldn’t impede tent setup, and the fire pit and table were clean and ready to go! We had less bug friends than I’ve ever seen at a campsite, plenty of space right next to the potable water to set up a portable shower, and the stars at night were clear and bright, deep in the heart of Florida (ten points to you if you know that adjusted lyric). Mr. Jay came to greet us and brought over his adorable pup to say hello as well. It’s been two years since I’ve been to their campsite, and he still remembered me (even after all their fully booked months!) and greeted us all with such kindness. We were bummed we didn’t get to see Mrs. Suzette but respectfully might request a celebrity appearance next time we come down! Thank you Gateway Trails for a fun, safe, and gorgeous camping trip, we cannot wait to come back.

I could not recommend Amanda's place more highly! It's in a perfect location, right next to the most beautiful creek and far enough away from civilization that there's virtually no road noise. The bathhouse and outdoor kitchen are both amazing things to have, and Amanda was a helpful and attentive host. I'll definitely be back soon.

Weekend Trip to Sand Between Your Toes

This was a great spot, close to everything the world’s most beautiful beaches has to offer, yet far enough away to have a nice peaceful rest. Brian was very kind and quick to respond to any questions that we had. Host provided and nice little book with everything you needed to know about the property as well as restaurant recommendations along with menus. We had a wonderful time and would definitely stay here again!

Amanda is an absolute gem. She was so accommodating from the start. My sister and I arrived there Thursday afternoon and was immediately greeted by sweet Bella. (Amanda’s dog) She hung around with us for a lil bit and then left to make her rounds of the campground. She came back a lil later and said hello again before headed back home for the night. Amanda greeted us right away as well. She made sure we had everything we needed and even offered to pick anything else up that we may have forgotten when she went to the store later that afternoon. The campground was beautifully set up. We stayed at the RV site. My sister had her RV and I set up my rooftop tent on my jeep. The bathroom facilities are adorable. Amanda went above and beyond when she designed them. Very rustic and quaint. I could go on and on about Amanda and The Wandering Path. She personally called me on our way out thanking us for staying out there and then wished me a happy birthday today. That was the icing on the cake for me:) I told her that we will definitely make my bday and annual trip. Thanks again Amanda for the hospitality. We couldn’t be more happier with our stay. Give sweet Bella some love from us until next time.

Had a fantastic stay at the wandering path. We travelled with friends and booked yurts 1 & 2 which share the same entrance path so was super convenient. They were close but not to close. There was a good amount of people staying there that weekend but we had no issues with noise or waiting for the restrooms. The bathroom is an added bonus with hot showers. Especially after dipping in the creek. We loved our time there and will definitely be back. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway from city life.

I brought my 4.5yr camping at his request. Site 8 was the perfect spot for him to get the full camping feel but to still have access to a bathroom and also our car in the event we had to leave. The area was big enough that we felt secluded but I knew if I needed to find help I could. Which was a good peace of mind for a single mom.

We have a nice little RV pad on the back of our coastal home. Situated on a little bayou that opens out into Choctawhatchee Bay. Crab Island is only a 10 minute boat ride away. You would have access to our small dock and there is a neighborhood boat ramp less than one hundred feet away. This is a great place for kayaks, wave runners, and small boats. If you don't have a boat, we can set up any kind of trip you want. We are all licensed captains and own multiple Crab Island businesses. We have a 23' sailboat that we can take up to 6 people on for a peaceful 4 hour sail. You can charter our pontoon boat for as many as 6 people to take you to Crab Island as well as some other spots that only locals know about. We also have a restored 1966 Boston Whaler that is perfect for couples looking for a sunset cruise, etc. We can also do Waverunner tours. We can take you on a guided wave runner tour looking for dolphins and private beaches. We can also accommodate up to 2 people on an inshore flats skiff targeting redfish and trout on light spinning gear and fly rods. The neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Fort Walton with large oaks and magnolias providing plenty of shade for bike riding and walking. Downtown Fort Walton with its shops and quaint restaurants is only a mile away. Didn't bring a bike, we have 2 you can use. The site comes with water/sewer and 30 Amp hookup. Our partial hook up woods camp haven is only 30 minutes to the emerald coast beaches, 25 minutes to natural springs and far enough from city lights to feel secluded and peaceful. Our property is 10 acres and a work in process. Slowly adding more sites and amenities. Our main home across the street houses 3 dogs and 2 mini goats. We do have a yard dog that protects the property but she is as sweet as they come. We have a fire pit to come relax in the serenity of the quiet woods. Our property is complete with an electric/dirt bike track that boarders the property… feel free to take a rip around! We live on heavily wooded acres and currently don’t have a fence. A temporary fence can be provided for small dogs. Please note, we do have lose neighborhood dogs. - Pet owners assume full responsibility. Please inform us of any pets upon arrival. We are building up our RV sites and preparing our homestead. Come back in the future for eggs, goat milk and fresh veggies !

Take the dreamy sunsets and sugary sands of Florida’s Emerald Coast, throw in a bar and restaurant-lined harbor, a handful of golf courses, and a state park, and you’ve got Destin, one of the Panhandle’s most popular beach resorts. Perched on a peninsula between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, sunseekers have a choice of beaches in Destin, where you can swim, snorkel, parasail, cruise the coast in search of dolphins, or cool off at a waterpark. RV parks, resorts, and campgrounds are dotted along the peninsula, or you can camp amid the sand dunes at Henderson Beach State Park.

Emerald Coast

Sandy beaches and turquoise waters stretch along Florida’s aptly nicknamed Emerald Coast. East of Destin, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and Grayton Beach State Park have popular coastal campgrounds, or you can head inland to hike, bike, and horseback ride in the Point Washington State Forest. A little further, check into an RV resort at Panama City Beach and enjoy water sports along the Grand Lagoon.

Gulf Islands

West of Destin, scenic barrier islands stretch all the way to the Alabama border. You can hike to coastal marshes and pristine beaches, then pitch your tent right on the sand at the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Or, seek out a secluded beach or fishing spot along Okaloosa or Santa Rosa islands.

Okaloosa County

Coastal parks, campgrounds, and boat launches pepper the shores of Choctawhatchee Bay, north of Destin. Heading inland, the rambling woodlands of Blackwater River State Forest provide plenty of opportunities for hiking, canoeing, and fishing, along with a choice of campgrounds.

When to go

Summer is peak season in Destin, when temperatures soar into the high 80s°F, and prices shoot up accordingly. Opt for a spring or fall visit to avoid the crowds—it will still be warm enough to hit the beach, and you can benefit from shoulder-season rates too. Many campgrounds stay open year-round, but be aware that seasonal activities and services may close down over winter.

Know before you go

Destin has plenty of supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, and you’ll find several shops selling camping and outdoor supplies.
Day-use fees apply in all Florida state parks, as well as campsite booking fees.
Stingrays are common in the Gulf from May through October, so take care when swimming, and always follow warning flags and local advice. Bug spray is equally a must for coastal camping.
