The best great views camping near Crystal River

·

The Nature Coast of Florida houses the city of Crystal River at its heart with all the favorite activities of hiking, fishing, birding, and boating, as well as more challenging recreational fare like seasonal hunting, backwoods biking, and equestrian trails. Wetlands surround the 141-mile-long Withlacoochee River, whose lakes and tributaries provide life to unique flora and fauna: the gentle manatee, scrub oaks and marsh trees, and the reclusive scrub jay (which many birders wait a lifetime to see). Crystal River campgrounds feature primitive or tent camping sites, plus water and electrical hookups for RVing or car camping. Most sites include fire pits, picnic tables, and grated grills.

Monarch Manor Farm is not a stack and pack camper on top of camper place. It is a private organic farm owned by a Homeopathic / Naturopathic doctor and biochemist who is a nature lover, lives there and enjoys sharing the peace and tranquility with others. Pets, kids and even grandparents are welcome. The property has 40 fenced acres, private, secure and a safe place campers can enjoy. RV's, Campers, Tents, Class A, B, C, Campervans, Class B Plus, Super C, fifth wheelers, Toy haulers, Travel trailers, pop-up campers and conversions, welcomed. Although the property can accommodate more than 50 sites, Rick keeps it at only 3 spacious sites around his organic spring fed pond stocked with Tilapia, Largemouth bass, Red ear and Bluegill. Those who enjoy catch and release or catch and eat are welcome. There is also an abundance of blackberries and elderberries you are welcomed to pick which usually begins mid May. Guests can also enjoy many different types of wildlife, birds, chickens and even Black Angus cows meandering around. Monarch Manor Farm is also an official Monarch Butterfly weigh station and safe respite for migrating butterflies. These beautiful pollinators have been on Earth about 175 million years from what we can gather from fossils. Beyond the splendor that would be lost from the world if monarch butterflies went extinct, there would be ripple effects in the environment.  Monarchs share their habitat with many other species of insects and birds. The birds would lose a food source, and their decline is the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” for other pollinators. If other pollinators decline like monarchs, it could have impacts on the food that humans rely on. This year (2024) we hope to finally get the Monarch Butterfly put on the endangered species list and see them rebound in numbers. So when you stay here you are also making a contribution that provides a safe chemical free environment for these super pollinators to multiply once again. All three sites are right around the pond with great views. A combination of large live oaks, shade and sun All sites also have a picnic table, fire ring and grill. Site 1 has your choice of 110 and 30amp power. There is no power at site 2, 2A or 3. The bath house is equipped with 2 showers. One shower is heated by geothermal means and the other by a tankless hot water heater for evening showers. There is a foot pedal hand sink, portable-potty, and seating. All water is filtered and drinkable. There is a fish cleaning station equipped with a garden hose. Only 22 minutes from either Ocala, Fl or Gainesville, Fl. and 5min from Hwy. 75 We look forward to hosting you, your family and friends. We also offer booking larger groups of any size or all three all three sites at once. Bring your yoga, breathing, drum circle retreat or any other event you may have and we will make it happen for you. The only rules here are Peace, kindness, safety and security. See you soon nature is calling you for a much needed destressing vacation. RV's, Campers, Tents, Class A, B, C, Campervans, Class B Plus, Super C, fifth wheelers, Toy haulers, Travel trailers, pop-up campers and conversions, welcomed. Beautiful spot overlooking Lake Weir in The Ocala National Forest. Watch the otters play and count the many different birds that make this lake their home. Treat yourself sunsets every night as the sun disappears into the water and enjoy the awesome reflection of the moon as it sets on the lake. (Check the moonrise/moonset tables to see if there is a visible moon during your intended stay - it really is an incredible sight). We have an amazing outdoor shower, with hot and cold running water, overlooking the lake. The extra large soaking bathtub is available for your use for $20 per stay if there are not other campers at the time due to us only having one bathroom available. Great for relaxing, bathing kids, or a very romantic evening. Canoe, stand up paddle board and kayak available for your use at no charge. You can paddle to nearby Gator Joe's which is an awesome spot on the lake for great food, drinks, and live music. Electric and water hookup (garden hose) both sites. RV 30 amp electric hookup, as well as regular 15 amp electric hookup on hilltop site. Many trees on the property makes it tricky for large vehicles to maneuver, therefor we have a limit of 25 feet including tow vehicle. Dockside site has 15 amp hookup. We do have an adapter to connect to 30 amp hookup. It is closer to the house and bathroom than site 2 and has more shade and easy access to the dock. Pontoon boat rentals are available down the road. Being on the lake we do have mosquitos but they are mostly an issue at dusk and dawn for about an hour but we are out in nature so insect encounters of all kinds are to be expected. If there is a nice breeze, which is often the case, you can enjoy the sunset from the rocker loveseat at the edge of our dock. We also have citronella torches available for rent. We also offer a large bundle of firewood for $10. Campers MUST check in by 10 pm. We recommend arriving during daylight whenever possible. It is important you understand that our property is not in the wilderness. We are NOT a commercial campground. We have a couple of acres in a residential area and there are homes near the campsite. That being said, you will have complete privacy at your campsites as the two sites are on opposite ends of the property and you will not see me at all other than when you check in, unless you desire to do so. Both campsites face the lake however, and you may see some fisherman out there from time to time, but I guarantee you will see much more wildlife than people. Each site has its own fire pit. Our guests love this place because of the lake, the incredible sunsets and moonsets over the lake, and all the incredible wildlife we have here, as you can see from the reviews. Well behaved pets are welcome off leash as long as they are supervised and don't bother other campers. They are not allowed on the porches. Please pick up any mess that is in the path of foot traffic. There is a $20 pet fee per pet per stay. Add it under extras. Pet sitting is available for an additional charge. I'm a professional photographer with 30 years of experience. Please inquire if you are interested in having your portrait made at this incredible location. We are 20 minutes from world famous Silver Springs, 20 minutes from Ocala Drive-In Movie Theater that usually shows great films for both kids and adults, and 20 minutes from the Santos Trailhead that offers world class biking and hiking paths. Unfortunately, I cannot do anything about the people that come here that have not read the description, expecting a wilderness campground and choose to leave a negative review based on that but everyone that has read the description has loved it here and many return.

The best great views camping near Crystal River guide

Where to go

Flying Eagle Preserve

Lakes, marshes, swamps, and the small isles of the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes surround Flying Eagle Preserve. Camping in southwest Florida offers access to ecological and environmental wonder, with opportunities for birding, fishing, and hunting—provided campers apply for the proper licenses from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Flying Eagle welcomes horse trail riders, too—both equestrian and primitive camping sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and barbecue grills (free with a reservation). ADA-accessible bathrooms allow all to enjoy campsites, boating, and canoeing among the open waters and live oak scrub.

Potts Preserve

Connected to the same waters as Flying Eagle, the wetlands of Potts Preserve are home to an array of wildlife and plants unique to the gulf coast. Waterside camping in Potts Preserve provides opportunities to catch sight of leatherback turtles, while visiting birders might glimpse the elusive and endangered Florida scrub jay. Stay at equestrian, primitive, or backcountry campsites only available by foot, letting hike-in and hike-out campers experience the splendor to the north and south of the park. Bike down the nine miles of multi-use trails, reserve a horse-drawn buggy ride, or just park off of Hooty Point for day-use and river hiking trails.

Withlacoochee State Forest

The Withlacoochee State Forest follows the same river as Flying Eagle and Potts Preserve. Obtain a State Forest Use Authorization by either calling ahead or stopping by the visitor center for access to 50,000 acres of outdoors recreation, campsites under shady oaks with concrete pads for car or tent camping, and an RV park with full hookups and dump stations. Campsites feature fresh water, each with a picnic table and grated fire ring. Hike the Citrus Loop Tracts or hunt (with proper licenses mentioned above) during the proper season. Motorbikes and ATVs can cruise the 2,600-acre Croom Motorcycle Area, a designated off-road exploration and recreation section.

When to go

With the hot and heavy summers of the gulf coast, Hipcampers enjoy visiting Crystal River, Florida from November through March, where the lowest temperature averages out to 45°F. In January, when the Gulf of Mexico experiences its winter cool down, Crystal River welcomes over 400 manatees with the Florida Manatee Festival, offering the opportunity to celebrate and even swim with gentle and majestic sea cows in their natural habitat.
