Weekend Trip to Fernwood on Alan F.’s Land

Very quite spot to enjoy the wilderness. It was great to take our dog on a walk on the nicely cut trails. Very warming and clean campsite.

10 nights at The Sandbox Campground

We had a quiet 10 days enjoying the fresh air and sunshine in eastern Connecticut. Brendan's hospitality was more than we expected, and he let us know when other visitors would to be coming in. They are working on improvements to the camp sites and an outdoor amphitheater to be ready soon. Looking forward to returning and hearing some music in there. Shopping in nearby Groton for food and other supplies was really convenient. We did a little touring both in the countryside and along the shore which have that classic New England beauty. Mostly just hanging out at the campsite, cooking outdoors, taking walks with our dogs, and taking in the surrounding landscape. The water is good and accessible at 2 points, one near the main facility and the other on the road to site #2. This was our first trip this year and it was a great place to get all the camping stuff sorted out, which for us includes both tenting and RVing. The cellular signal was good so you're not really "off the grid" and a big plus if you have people that can't be away from the internet. Site #1 gets plenty of sunshine so prepare for that as we experienced the hottest days so far this year. Tested out some new portable solar power stations which proved to be perfect for recharging and playing music.

We loved camping at Fernwood 2! It was our first time camping in a long time and it was the perfect setting. Having our own bathroom was a nice touch. We thought it was shared. Loved the fire pit and shady area to setup our tent. The firefly's and stars at night were spectacular! Alan was very helpful you can tell the area is well kept and loved. Make sure to bring lots of bug spray. We didn't get to see all the trails, but we'll definetly be back. Thank you so much!!

The yurt on Nancy's land was a great experience. It was comfortable, spacious and clean. I loved that it was so close for beach. Great place to grill and reminisce with old friends. Highly recommended.

The Yurt Sanctuary was calm peaceful place to stay near the beach. We used it to have a place to crash after a fishing trip and grill etc! Every was as listed, one thing you might want to keep in mind during summer month it does get hot! But the evening was very cool and comfy with the fans but luckily the beach is literally a 7min drive. We had a blast and will definitely come back again!

Weekend Trip to Humble Farm with Simplicity

This site is exactly as described and pictured! Both hosts - Mary and Viktor - were extremely kind and welcoming. Yes, there was another group camping in the paddock BUT there's enough space that there was still plenty of privacy (more than a public campground). There was plenty of firewood provided at a reasonable $10. Everything was clean. Would definitely camp here again!

This campsite was everything we hoped for and more. It’s perfect for self-sustainable, off-grid campers looking for peace, privacy, and a deep connection with nature. The site is quiet and secluded, with a very clean and well-stocked outhouse—such a thoughtful detail that made a big difference. The host was incredibly friendly and considerate, striking that perfect balance of being helpful while still respecting our space. The woodlands surrounding the site are absolutely beautiful, and the fireflies that come out at dusk created such a magical atmosphere. A definite highlight was watching the farm animals—seeing the horses and cows all peacefully eating hay together was entertaining and soothing. We did have an encounter with a bear family during our stay, which was both awe-inspiring and a good reminder: come prepared and practice smart wildlife safety. This is truly a wild and natural area, and that’s part of its beauty. We left feeling grounded, inspired, and already planning a return trip. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a genuine off-grid experience with a touch of farm charm and real wilderness.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can’t say enough wonderful things about our stay at this horse farm! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality by Farmer Ron, whose kindness and genuine love for the land made us feel right at home. He greeted us with a smile, gave us a quick tour, and made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Waking up to the soft sounds of horses and birds was incredibly calming. The property itself is spacious and serene—ideal for anyone looking to disconnect and recharge. The hosts were friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about caring for the animals and the land. A highlight of our trip was spending time with the horses—especially Chunky! Chunky the horse stole our hearts with his sweet, gentle personality and his big, lovable eyes. We looked forward to seeing him every day. There were thoughtful touches everywhere, from firewood availability to clean facilities and helpful local recommendations. Whether you're an animal lover, an outdoor enthusiast, or just someone looking for a unique and peaceful place to stay, this horse farm is a hidden gem. We’re already planning our next trip back—highly recommend! And give Chunky a carrot for us!

We camped in our motorhome at KS Joy’s land for three nights. The yard is lovely. Surrounded by woods with singing birds and very private. The yard is very well maintained, and there is an outdoor shower and an outdoor privy. There’s 30 amp pole, which you may use and move about the yard at will. The location is extremely convenient to the Connecticut coast, including Mystic and the historic Seaport. The only possible negative is that the house is off a busy road, and there is some road noise. Overall, a wonderful place to stay..

What an amazing location! We loved our beautiful and peaceful stay at this glamping site. Everything was so well-though-out, from the hammock to the firepit to the cornhole to the canoe by the pond. My family and I wish we could have stayed longer!

Absolutely loved at stay! The site was very well kept, had a 5 gallon jug with a dispenser waiting for us when we arrived. Krystine was even kind enough to lend us her ladder for the weekend while we put up tarps to protect us from the rain. The farm animals were super cute and friendly. When asking for wood she had her husband bring it all the way down to our site where he stacked it and made sure we were all taken care of. The trees offered great shade and the toilet was very close by. I would highly recommend this site to anyone looking to get away and reconnect with nature.

Secluded, clean and amazing. Level parking for our rooftop tent, clean port-a-potty and good mixture of shade with spots for direct solar charging. The hiking trails are easy to get to and very well kept. This is our new favorite spot to go for a weekend camp. Great host! Thank you very much Alan!

Weekend Trip to Glamp Frogmore

This is an awesome place to stay. The location is peaceful and feels very private. Everything is well-appointed with extra little touches (a flowerbed planted by the outhouse!) that add up to a real glamping experience. We had a great night away, and would recommend Frogmore to anyone who wants to feel like they're out in nature while still having all the comforts of home.

Amazing spot. We brought three dogs and they had plenty of room. Fire pit was magical as well as outdoor shower! The shower was heaven! The site was completely set up for us when we got there and the owner thought of everything! We are grateful and would stay again for sure. It's kinda close to the road but traffic was barely there and it was close to all beaches and Foxwoods. I'd recommend it to anyone anytime.

No matter where you set up you'll have your own private fire pit, and level ground for your tent(s). Come and enjoy a quiet retreat, or use Fernwood as a base for many outdoor activities-biking, fishing, hiking-all nearby. Natchaug Forest offers great trout fishing. Goodwin State Forest is less than 3 miles away by car where you can put in a canoe on Pine Lake, amble through the wildflower and pollinator gardens, or enjoy the Education Center and Museum. From Goodwin, you can access the Air Line State Park Bike/Hiking Path. Chris has been master carpenter and cabinet maker since the 1980’s. The two spend time keeping the grounds and gardens up and going out to dance. They love live music. The property is also the home to 3 cats. While physical check out of the tent is 10am, please ask if you would like to stay later. We can do a day rental of just the pool and gardens for an additional fee of $600 for parties of up to 20 people. For larger events, such as weddings, please contact us to discuss. Please ask if you would like to stay a little later than typical check out time. We often can accommodate. Please do NOT pick the fruits or veggies without asking as often things are not quite ripe yet. When things are ripe, we will try to put a bowl of fresh stuff out for you to choose from. Of course, it goes without saying, Please be considerate and clean up after yourselves. No smoking cigarettes or e-cigarette, vapes in the tent. If you need to bring a pet, they must be well-trained and not have an issue with cats or other dogs as we have 3 cats. Pets are NOT allowed to go to the bathroom on the lawn or in the gardens. They must either go in the woods or in the designated area for this. Please clean up after your pet if in the designated area. Ask us for how and where. The river will have to be accessed by foot from a cart path and would be tent camping only there. there are landmark sticks leading to Judd Brook and more leading all the way to Jeremy River it's a mile hike to Jeremy River. there's an old campsite there but you have to walk to get there not accessible by vehicle. Bring your bicycles and ride the scenic Airline Trail access trail from Old Hartford Rd entrance. Enjoy stunning sunsets and starlit nights. Gravel pit and quarry is strictly off limits. Do not enter that area or you will be asked to leave.

Milk Thistle Farm

With the original home built in 1785, Milk Thistle farm is on the historic register and is comprised of the main house and 5 acres of land. It is run as a small non-profit animal sanctuary and is home to rescued chickens, goats, and pigs, as well as two humans and their dog and cat companions. The main property is fenced in, with a large back field great for tent camping, and an orchard to explore that can also double as hammock camping. There is parking for cars and bikes. We try to minimize our impact on the environment as much as possible, and encourage our guests to compost, recycle, and dispose of waste accordingly. Please note we have dogs, including a Livestock Guardian Dog that does bark to alert us of new people and warn off would be predators.
