Dunes Desert Camp

Enjoy your own private desert playground, 320 Acres of pristine wilderness in the shadow of Blanca Peak and in sight of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Whether you want to explore the valley on a hike, bike, or All Terrain Vehicle, fly over it in a private light aircraft, or plan an expedition to the mountains, Dunes Desert Camp is your staging ground for exploring the breathtaking natural wonders of the San Luis Valley. Located just twenty miles from downtown Alamosa, Dunes Desert Camp offers remoteness and privacy coupled with the convenience of being near a vibrant metropolitan center. Get away from it all, and get back to finding yourself in the desert.

We have one large Safari tent with a double bed and 5 two person dome tents fitted with camp cots

Sleeping bags, inflatable mattresses and camping equipment is available to rent on site.

Kick back in the "chill zone" when it gets hot, or watch the sunset light up the evening sky.

Shower and washing facilities are located a short walk from your accommodations.

Mudita Camel's Yurt

Eons ago camels roamed through the San Luis Valley and today they roam once again.  Come and stay at our yurt enjoying views of the mountains and of the camels and donkeys roaming their home.   Take a farm tour and get the chance to pet the camels and maybe even sneak a camel kiss.  Enjoy a night stay at the yurt viewing the stars or enjoying a nice fire at the fire pit.   Come stay in our yurt and get the chance to meet our little herd of camels and wake up to the views of the gorgeous surroundings!  Travel down a few miles of dirt roads and you will find our little oasis of 35 acres.  The hard-sided yurt sits right next to the field where our camels and donkeys roam.  Set apart from the main house, sitting in Trujillo Canyon, and surrounded by BLM/National Forrest, its the perfect spot for recharging. Located off the beaten path so amazing for star gazing but also close enough to the Sand Dunes for day adventures.  Our property is off the grid and allows you to disconnect for a little while and there is a nice creek to go and sit by.  Each stay also includes a farm tour if you are interested.  The night skies have little light pollution and are perfect for star gazing.  We can't wait for you to come and stay with us!Don't take our word for it, guests love their stays with us! "We struck gold finding this magical place. Colorado Sports Ranch & Refuge

High up in the San Luis Valley, the Colorado Sports Ranch and Refuge occupies over 150 acres. Joyful Journey Hot Springs is 10 minutes away, and Great Sand Dunes National Park is visible from the property.

The ranch is uniquely suited to athletes and other fitness enthusiasts with a 5k running/walking trail and a well stocked indoor/outdoor gym with kettlebells, TRX equipment, squat and bench racks, plyo boxes, bands, rowing and cycling machines, basketball hoop, and all manner of agility equipment.   Gym cost is $10 per person or $25 for a group of four.   Gym users must sign a liability waiver.  

The camping area is about 1/4 mile from the main house and about 500 meters from the gym and potable water.

The highest concentration of 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado is in this area with trail heads in nearby Crestone. Rock climbers and rock hounds will enjoy Penitente Canyon about 40 minutes west.  White water rafting and all manner of paddling are available on the Arkansas River in nearby Salida, as is access to some of the finest mountain biking in the world, particularly the Monarch Crest Trail. 

World class fly fishing can be found on the Arkansas River, and Blue Mesa Reservoir is home to all varieties of trout, pike, and kokanee salmon. We are happy to arrange tours with local guides and adventure providers.

The Colorado Sports Ranch and Refugee is a working, off-grid, sustainable homestead. Horses, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, dogs, cats, and a donkey all share the property. Animal tours are available.

The San Luis Valley has a storied history in Colorado. Come experience this slice of virtually untouched 10,000-acre plot of land nestled against the legendary Fourteener Mt. Blanca! Wake up to unobstructed million dollar views.  Lovely area with lots of wildlife. Pulls campers from all walks of life and everyone seems to have a huge smile on their face. A little town with sundries is close enough for goods but far enough to forget you’re near civilization. The nights sky has an unobstructed view of the sky (no light pollution). Easy to get to and close to the sand dunes. If you have a large group we recommend booking both sites.

Beautiful Mountain Views

Once a part of a larger ranch called Red Rocks, this is a completely off-grid, rustic living area now. We appreciate and acknowledge the Southern Ute Nation as the original caretakers of this Valley. Once owned by a man who flew UltraLite aircraft, this is a peaceful, quiet, rustic, and spacious land treasured by the current family who owns it. The family is working toward self-sustainability and creating a Metaphysics Center on the land beginning with a Labyrinth.Learn more about this land:High winds in the spring or fall necessitate using a camper or RV.  During the summer, tents will work out well with little wind to blow them away. This land is peaceful and off the grid.  It's close enough to town for eating out or grabbing gas and groceries, but it’s far enough away to let the world fall away as you relax and enjoy the stars.  Perfect for family camping and seniors who love to camp.  For everyone's safety, we wear masks and social distance for check-ins and any interactions with campers.  We also ask campers to practice social distancing if there are other campers on-site as well.  We thank all campers for being patient and respectful during the COVID-19 pandemic.
