What can you expect? Quiet, beauty, birdsong, ocean roar, widely spaced campsites (only 5 on the 5 acres set aside for camping), extra stuff if you need or want it (fresh bread, soup, cobbler; quilts, free firewood, local tips on travel and where to hike or what to visit), etc. Or total solitude if you want it. Bring your (most breeds) dogs if you wish. Starlink internet means you can Zoom in the forest. Walk to the beach along a no-shoulder country road (or drive). Teach your toddler how to build a dam in the shallow creek. Read. There are no visible neighbors, no ambient light or sound. The air is clean and clear and the water is potable from an artesian spring on the property. No electricity at the sites, no generators allowed. (Charge your electronics at the farmhouse.) My aunt and uncle bought the p;roperty in 1947 from the first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who came to the U.S. in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. Paolo's wife, Felicita, and their three children stayed behind; they were to follow within the year. In the country outside of Ferndale, California, he purchased the property, one mile from the ocean, and built a Tyrolean-style house, a chicken house (with a grappa still under the main floor), an outhouse, a corral, and a barn. He purchased 7 cows. And then, it was August 1914, and the War to End All Wars broke out in Europe. Felicita and the children, living in a village on the Austrian border, were interned in a prison camp in Austria with the rest of the village's residents. The Gabriellis' young daughter died there. Six years passed before Felicita, Virgil and Louis were able to join Paolo in America. In 1938, Virgil--Fr. Gino--became the first Ferndale boy to serve Mass in his hometown church. Felicita died in 1940, and Paolo closed the dairy and moved into Ferndale. In 2014, we invited the people who had been children in the 1920s and '30s who had come to this ranch after Sunday Mass to gather with other Italian families for polenta, wine, and music. They came with photographs and maps and Mass cards and diaries, and shared their memories of a childhood in this place that still loved them. What can you expect? The Redwood Stumphouse

Similar to a treehouse, The Stumphouse sits on an elevated deck wrapped around an old growth Redwood stump and is surrounded by large Redwood trees. The site is a short walk uphill from the parking area. Please feel free to ask about access before booking or review the photos section for pictures of the path if you need more details. The Stumphouse is large enough for 2 sleeping pads inside and there is space on the deck for one more, however please note that the deck is not covered. A quick walk downhill brings you to our family's farm (where farm products are available for purchase, see below) and above the stump house are logging roads and acres of forest land. Neighbors are nearby but not visible due to the lush environment and large neighboring acreages. The air is clean and fresh as we are 5 miles from the ocean and surrounded by forests. As far as history, our land was logged in 1915 and several old growth stumps are scattered on the property as evidence. Since then the forest has regrown and the young trees are already hundreds of feet tall. A twenty minute bike ride or five minute car ride will bring you to one of two nearby towns, and spectacular beaches are also close by. Eureka, just minutes to the south and Arcata just minutes to the north offer dining and entertainment of all kinds. Farmers markets, movie theaters, live music, boat tours of Humboldt Bay, breweries, wineries, cider companies, roller-derby and more, there is always something fun to do in the area. Outdoor walks and hikes in both the forest and along beautiful beaches and coastline are abundant. Patrick's Point State Park and the town of Trinidad 15 to 20 minutes drive north offer some of the most breathtaking coastal views and beaches in the country. With 6 rivers, 3 lagoons, Humboldt Bay and the ocean nearby there are almost always opportunities for great boating and fishing. Lovely 5 acre property in the wilderness of Trinity County, ideally suited as a retreat setting far away from city living for an individual or a couple. Nestled in a tiny town with little traffic, no cell phone reception and nature as far as the eye can reach, the property butts up against the wild and scenic South Fork of the Trinity River. Here you will be able to unwind, relax and make the space your own for just a few days or up to a month. The 2 houses on the property are about 80' from the RV spot. Enough plants are grown around each house to provide privacy in the summer/fall. The property has a farm vibe. There are large vegetable gardens, fruit trees and I raise Duck and Lamb meat. MOST IMPORTANT: There is no cell phone reception in town or anywhere near it, however I do provide unlimited WIFI via a booster. This place is not suitable for children, pets or cigarette smokers. Babies/Toddlers are ok. The property is adjacent to a country road and though you can hear the traffic as it goes by, the amount of cars is small in this town of 250 people. There are 2 neighbors that are quiet and considerate and far enough away to enjoy your privacy and nature retreat. The property is 5 Acres and borders the South Fork of the Trinity River and Hayfork Creek. There is a short little trail near the house for walks or jogs, and plenty of pristine swim spots/holes all over this area. We have a small Post Office and one small General Store that offers some basic non organic food items/supplies, gas and propane. I grow my own produce and will be happy to share any excess produce during your stay. However, it is important to arrive well prepared with food and supplies before arriving at property. The next closest town with more amenities is Hayfork, and it's about a 40 minute drive. No hospital or police station in town. Next services are in Weaverville CA. Nearest place to get all groceries is in Hayfork, a 35 min drive from Hyampom.

We offer off-grid and mostly offline farmstay retreats at our self-reliant, educational, permaculture farm. We are a digital detox environment and welcome guests who are looking to unplug and recharge. A farm tour on arrival is included. Guests are invited to help with gardening, animal chores, food preservation, and other farm activities Monday thru Friday from 9-noon. Information on self-reliance, living off the grid, and farming knowledge is shared while participating in morning farm activities. A farm meal prepared from our gardens is included in the booking and served at 1PM. There are options for a variety of dietary preferences. All accommodations have been custom build by Munro. Much of the lumber comes from trees on the the land and is hand milled and planed giving each cabin the warm beauty of natural wood. All guests are invited to enjoy the wood fired sauna, meditation grove, forest hikes and swimming on Van Duzen river. The property is gated. Quiet, beauty, birdsong, ocean roar, widely spaced campsites (only 5 on the 5 acres set aside for camping), extra stuff if you need or want it (fresh bread, soup, cobbler; quilts, free firewood, local tips on travel and where to hike or what to visit), etc. Or total solitude if you want it. Bring your (most breeds) dogs if you wish. Starlink internet means you can Zoom in the forest. Walk to the beach along a no-shoulder country road (or drive). Teach your toddler how to build a dam in the shallow creek. Read. There are no visible neighbors, no ambient light or sound. The air is clean and clear and the water is potable from an artesian spring on the property. No electricity at the sites, no generators allowed. (Charge your electronics at the farmhouse.) My aunt and uncle bought the p;roperty in 1947 from the first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who came to the U.S. in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. In the country outside of Ferndale, California, he purchased the property, one mile from the ocean, and built a Tyrolean-style house, a chicken house (with a grappa still under the main floor), an outhouse, a corral, and a barn. He purchased 7 cows. And then, it was August 1914, and the War to End All Wars broke out in Europe. Felicita and the children, living in a village on the Austrian border, were interned in a prison camp in Austria with the rest of the village's residents. The Gabriellis' young daughter died there. Six years passed before Felicita, Virgil and Louis were able to join Paolo in America. In 1938, Virgil--Fr. Gino--became the first Ferndale boy to serve Mass in his hometown church. Felicita died in 1940, and Paolo closed the dairy and moved into Ferndale. In 2014, we invited the people who had been children in the 1920s and '30s who had come to this ranch after Sunday Mass to gather with other Italian families for polenta, wine, and music. They came with photographs and maps and Mass cards and diaries, and shared their memories of a childhood in this place that still loved them. What can you expect? We hope to one day renovate the old shed into rentals along with a bathroom/kitchen unit, but for now it's only camping.Learn more about this land:We are in the process of developing an area to host travelers, and currently we have a basic camping area and facilities just outside of the center of Arcata. We have a compost toilet, drinking water, and a number of chickens who may visit you (fresh eggs also available). Also provide a table to cook on and a seating area to catch the last sun of the day (if it's not overcast). We are not an option for people sleeping in their vehicles (2-3 minute walk from parking area to camping area). We only rent out one spot per night so you will have the area to yourselves.
