If a vehicle becomes stuck, guests are responsible for arranging their own towing.
This is unfenced private land bordering public Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas. On rare occasions, someone may mistakenly pass through assuming the land is public. This has always been resolved easily by letting them know they are on private property.
Located at the base of Copper Mountain, the property offers wildlife sightings, panoramic views, and generally good cell service despite the remote feel.

This campground is in a convenient location, right in town but just off the main drag. There is shopping nearby and easy access to Joshua Tree National Park. We are traveling during the winter so stayed 3 nights in January 2026. We were fortunate that the weather was not too chilly but did get down to about 39 most nights and bright, beautiful, sunny days around 60 for daytime exploring.
The sites were pretty level which is always nice with hookups conveniently located for water, sewer and 30 amp electrical. There was room for our Jeep Wagoneer L to park as well as plenty of room to use the portable wood fire place that they provided. It was quiet with great views right from the campsite!
We would definitely come back and stay again if our travels bring us back to this location. While we are set up for boon docking with ample batteries and solar, we are finding it much more enjoyable i.e. quiet to be in campgrounds with electricity so people are not running generators all night long. Too funny really. We're traveling from ME to FL to CA and this was one of many spectacular stops along the way.

My family had a great time camping here. It was awesome being secluded and having so much space to ourselves, but nice to be close enough to town if we needed any supplies. There are others camping in the distance on BLM land and you can hear people riding ATV’s in the background, but it was not a bother at all. Having the deck was really nice, as well as the picnic table. We also made good use of the fireplace. We will definitely come back.

Location and hosts were amazing. I was looking for a place to get away from it all for a few days and this was a perfect fit. Any vehicle can get there. The sand is compacted enough. I pulled a 21’ travel trailer to the location with no issues. You do have BLM areas nearby but noise levels were low and at night no noise at all. You have an occasional person “lost” drive by but a non-issue. Plan on camping there again, it was an oasis for me and the dogs.

Real cool setup with camping sites, canvas tents, container rooms & castle tower rooms. Perfect location to explore Joshua Tree. There are lots of plants & lights for a very nice setup. Ryan met us as we arrived & later brought us our pre-ordered firewood & some RO water. We had 2 great nights with a huge full moon lighting the area. There was a photo sent showing where the bathrooms were, but we didn't know where the showers were or how to get more drinking water (aside from asking for it). There was water behind the pagoda, but we weren't sure if we could drink it.
We had a good stay and not many people were there as it isn't quite the busy season yet. It felt very secure with the property being fenced in with a coded gate.

The Shabby Shanty is the perfect spot for a quiet, relaxing camping weekend. It's just about 20 minutes drive into Joshua tree with views for miles. There's potable water, an area for cooking, outdoor toilet and tiny shower. It's just perfect for the simple camper!
