Hawks Hideaway offers 8 campsites suitable for tents of all sizes, many of which can accommodate two or more tents (additional fees may apply). We also have a large, unfurnished teepee, and are working on a cozy, furnished country cottage. (ETA Sept 25). Large trailers and RVs are NOT allowed. Nearby activities include: bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, stargazing, and rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our beautiful skys. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study. We gladly welcome pets, as long as you take care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess and filling in any holes. Well mannered, friendly dogs may be unleashed from time to time. Please, PLEASE watch your small pets carefully. If you're traveling with cats, please keep them on a lead. There is a riding academy and boarding facility adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders, hikers and cyclists to travel along the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood, a pleasant 30 minute walk through lush riparian area. Hawks Hideaway is a family owned property, occupied by a 3rd and 4th generation, mother-son team. Two generations have lived and died here before us and we are proud to be the custodians of this majestic property, full of old growth, gigantic cottonwood trees. A birdwatcher, or naturalists dream. Hawks Hideaway is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde River Greenway. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Hawks Hideaway is next to many miles of wilderness. You may see or encounter wildlife of all kinds, most are harmless, some are dangerous. It is your responsibility to know the difference. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects. You are responsible for your own safety and are camping here at you own risk. Our location on US Hwy 89 on the east side of the highway is only a few miles from the breathtaking aspens of Lockett Meadow, the ruins of Wupatki National Monument and the lava flows at Sunset Crater. Our stay at Sacred Spring was absolutely wonderful! From the very beginning, our hosts Gary and Daren were exceptional — incredibly kind, thoughtful, and great communicators both before and during our visit. They went above and beyond to help us celebrate my birthday weekend with family, making extra accommodations that made the trip feel truly special. The property itself is magical. The sunsets were breathtaking, the land peaceful and full of beauty. We loved exploring the hike down to the canyon and creek — it felt like a hidden paradise. The paddle boards and kayak added so much fun to our days, and every part of the stay felt relaxing and rejuvenating. You can tell Gary and Daren pour their hearts into this place. It’s the perfect mix of comfort, adventure, and serenity. We can’t wait to come back! 🌿✨

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sacred Springs. Gary and Daren have created a very special place with great energy. You can tell they love this place and want their guests to enjoy it as much as they do. They are happy to make recommendations for great hikes and adventures in the local area or you can just hang out and swim, kayak or paddle board in their beautiful creek front riparian area. My only concern was the proximity to the freeway and the noise associated with it. But I can honestly say that it didn’t bother me or keep me up at all. If anything it was a nice reminder to be grateful that I was chillin’ at Sacred Springs rather than out there on the roads. I am already looking forward to my next visit to the area, and staying again at Sacred Springs.

Weekend Trip to Hawks Hideaway Camping, LLC

We absolutely loved our stay at Hawk’s Hideaway! The property is beautiful and spacious, with plenty of shade from the large trees throughout the campground. Each site had a nice picnic table and fire ring, which made meals and evenings by the fire super convenient. The porta potties were impressively clean—definitely some of the best we’ve seen at a campground. The kids had a blast exploring and playing around the property, and they especially enjoyed watching the cows and horses at the neighboring ranch. “Buddy,” the owners’ friendly dog, was another highlight—our kids looked forward to every visit from him! We even spotted a few deer wandering through in the early morning, which made the experience feel extra special. Access to the Verde River was easy, even with several young kids (all under 10), and it made for a perfect little adventure. The campsite was very easy to find and access, and overall, the stay was peaceful and family-friendly. We’ll definitely be coming back—highly recommend Hawk’s Hideaway to anyone looking for a relaxing, scenic getaway in Cottonwood!

Beautiful campsite with one outstanding host. Clifford is truly one of the kindest people on earth. He greeted me at check in and gave me some tips on which campsite to choose. I stayed at site #2 which had an amazing sunset view. The grounds are neat and well kept and the porta-potty is clean. I was able to find the place fairly easily, but I recommend using Google Maps not Apple Maps. Apple could not find the address, but google did. Some minor dirt roads to get there, but my Subarus forester towing a small camper handled it just fine.

Easy directions to the remote spot. Some of the road was dirt but easily passable in a car. The owner has nice touches like horseshoes and cornhole, and a cabinet with camping necessities for purchase. There’s a nature trail too. The stargazing was incredible! Completely dark and quiet. Great sunrise too, along with a storm and rainbow. I-40 is in the far distance and barely detectable especially at night. Easily one of my favorite Hipcamp spots.

Very close to Verde Adventures Kayaker Pick-Up spot for Kayakers (walking distance), and not too far from Beasley Flats, (a few of minutes by car.) Love the private property access to the river for OTTERLIMITS users only. (walking distance). Would recommend a 4WD if not walking to this part, it was rutty and muddy. You don't want to get stuck! OTTERLIMITS had a big fire pit, big opening in the trees for Astronomy viewing, took my spotting scope, it was nice. Also used for birding, saw many gaggles of geese in formation flying south for the winter. There was plenty of kindling around to start a fire. Gene was a gracious host, offered some fire wood if we needed it. Loved the distant sounds of cows and coyotes in the background, and fall leaves in some areas. I highly recommend this spot. But don't go so late in the season like we did (Late October), unless properly prepared. We did okay, but kept an eye on the forecast the entire month before leaving. We prepared for 47 degree weather as the low, but it got down to 34 degrees. Much lower than predicted. Think it had to do with being so close to the water, as opposed to the town of CAMP VERDE, and the fact that the recent monsoons still left many areas (especially by the river) extremely wet and muddy. We couldn't even get close to the river without walking thru about 30 feet of mud. Almost slipped about a dozen times. Would highly recommend going before the monsoons or weeks after to let it dry out. Thanks Again GENE!

The perfect location for seeing the two local national monuments nearby. The FHU site had beautiful views of the Painted Desert in the distance. Communication from the owners before and during my stay was very helpful. Dark and quiet at night. Easy access, optional amenities. I'll be back.

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe, comfortable and welcome and will come back again for a visit when in the area.

Gary and Daren are living their dream and it shows in every detail. The bathroom and showers were clean and stocked, the coffee selection was outstanding, they have everything you need to good a good meal and we even told him the ladder golf needed fixing and he had it fixed within hours. I literally didn’t want to leave. It’s an absolutely magical here and I feel grateful I was able to experience all this beauty. Also the creek was beautiful and refreshing! We’ll definitely be back!

Love love love!! This was one of the best campsites I’ve managed to stay at during my travels. Lovely hosts, great bathroom with overhead shower, clean toilets, a super cool communal room with coffee and cooled water cooler, along with cooking materials for the onsite grill. Lots of cool trails, fauna and flora plus tons of hummingbirds and other wildlife to see. The creek was pretty and everything was very peaceful and quiet. The gravel roads to get there were totally worth every minute. Thanks so much Gary and Daren! I’ll be back here next time I’m in Sedona 🩷

Where to go

Northern Arizona

Stretching across the Colorado Plateau, Northern Arizona is the lushest part of the state, with a mix of lakes, mountains, ponderosa pine forests, and desert landscapes. Sedona and nearby Flagstaff are both within this region's boundaries, as is Grand Canyon National Park. Campers have options here, with campsites available in Pine Flat Campground, Manzanita Campground, and Cave Springs Campground. Dispersed camping areas also dot the Coconino National Forest.

Central Arizona

South of Sedona, Central Arizona offers a mix of wilderness areas and big cities, notably the Phoenix metropolitan area. It's also home to the Montezuma Castle National Monument, a short drive from Sedona in the town of Camp Verde, as well as Kartchner Caverns State Park.

Southern Arizona

For a taste of the Old West, head to Southern Arizona, where you'll find a mix of historic sites, ghost towns, and even wineries. Highlights for nature lovers include the cactus-filled Saguaro National Park in the Sonoran Desert and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, just outside of Tucson.

When to go

Sedona is at its busiest during the summer months, when it plays host to all sorts of cultural and music festivals. However, this time of year is also hot, and temperatures of over 100°F are common. If the combination of heat and crowds sounds less than ideal, consider visiting in early spring or late autumn, when temperatures are hot but not scalding. Winter is also a good option, when daytime highs hover in the 60s.
