We raise Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas on 90 acres of reclaimed coal mine land. We are using the animals and permaculture techniques to repair this land to a vibrant, productive place. We also have ducks, beehives, gardens and a 2200 square foot hoop-house, and we homeschool 3 boys as well. We have a farm store with a variety of soaps and personal care products, as well as farm products such as homegrown and ground cornmeal, granola made with our duck eggs, herbal teas and herbs, tanned sheepskins, etc. The farm tours are 1-1.5 hours, the "Junior Tour" is largely meet-the-animals, but also a stroll through the hoop-house, and whatever else may be available (ducklings, bottle feeding goat kids or alpaca crias, etc). The "Sustainability Tour" is with Caleb, and - based on your interests - is focused more on how we graze the animals, rainwater collection, solar set-up, farm management, etc. We gear this tour heavily toward individual interest, basically Q & A about what you want to know about small farm/sustainable/off-grid living.

Pine Forest Tent Sites Walk-in

Tent site · Sleeps 15
This walk-in tent site is in a large mature pine stand on the highest point of our farm, with great views of the surrounding fields with animals, orchard, pond, and beehives. It has some open space as well as mostly full tree cover, lots of level tents spaces and hammock spots, two fire pits, and a composting outhouse.  Camping is on the top of the wooded hill, with parking a short walk of a few hundred feet at the bottom of the hill.  This campsite has no drive-up access, but is the most out of sight and sound of the main body of the farm. There is a picnic table that converts to two backed benches with a push-button mechanism, please message if you have trouble converting it but it is pretty straight-forward!

Meadow Tent Sites Drive-up

These pull-up sites are in an open meadow/pasture, with a few trees for shade if needed. There are plenty of level areas for tents, and a fire ring with rock seating just yards from the parking spot.  There is a picnic table that converts to two backed benches with push-button mechanisms. We have a composting outhouse within walking distance. Depending on the timing, our mixed herd of Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas may be nearby - we use intensive rotational grazing so they move every day most of the year, including near/through the campsites (when un-occupied of course!) - and the fields with scattered berry bushes, trees and shrubs are great for scenic short walks and foraging depending on the season. We have quail, wild turkey, rabbits, and lots of other wildlife (I have been using the Merlin app recently and we have well over 50 species of birds!). These sites are the most remote on the farm, "way out back" for great privacy.

Shrubbery Tent Site Drive-up

This pull-up site is on the edge of an open meadow/pasture, tucked into a small stand of pines and Autumn Olive shrubs. There are several level tent sites, as well as good hammock trees, and a fire ring with rock seating just yards from the parking area.  There is a picnic table that converts to two backed benches with push-button mechanisms. We have a composting toilet within walking distance.  There is a small creek down the hill, and depending on the timing, our mixed herd of Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas may be nearby - we use intensive rotational grazing so they move every day most of the year, including near/through the campsites (when un-occupied of course!). This site has the easiest access but is the closest to our house, several hundred feet away (although down the hill enough that it is out of sight), and you can see the side of our barn from the site. If you're looking for even more privacy, check out the Meadows Site, it is the farthest out at the back of the farm, although actually has better line-of-site to the house/central farm.

  • Review summary

    Generated from real Hipcamper reviews

Solace Farm offers a unique camping experience with the chance to engage closely with farm life, including friendly hosts and a variety of animals. Visitors have praised the peaceful nature of the campsites, the enjoyable farm tours, and the opportunity to purchase homemade goods. However, a few reviews noted issues with campsite preparation and interactions between dogs. Despite these concerns, most campers appreciated the privacy, scenic beauty, and welcoming atmosphere of the farm.

We had a fantastic time at the location. Amy was very responsive to all of my messages and helped us get settled in even after the sun went down. Cannot recommend the tour of the farm animals highly enough. Highlight of the weekend. The animals did not bother us at all and we got to Camp next to the alpacas. They have very friendly puppies as well. There were a couple of people up at 3:00 a.m. working on a car or motorcycle several houses away but they were being wholly disrespectful to everyone in the neighborhood. I can't imagine that is a constant problem they have but it did make for a long night of motorcycle noises. Nonetheless our morning tour was great and we were very happy. Would come back , but may bring earplugs in case the neighbors decide to act up 🤣

Extras

  • Guided Tour with Junior Farmers$25.00 per itemA guided tour of our farm, by our 3 boys (ages 9, 12, & 15). You will get to visit (and probably pet) our variety of livestock, including numerous former bottle baby goats, Duncan the sheep, alpacas, and - depending on time of year - baby ducks, alpaca crias, or Highland calves. You will also likely tour the hoophouse and see where we grow herbs, figs, sweet potatoes, melons, etc.
  • Sustainability Tour$25.00 per itemThis tour (usually led by Caleb, occasionally Amy) focuses on our sustainable life - rainwater collection, rotational grazing, solar set-up, orchard management, etc. These tours are largely Q & A based, tailored to what you want to know about this lifestyle, so we can talk about almost *anything* - our homemade solar dehydrator, gardening, soapmaking, sourdough breadmaking, homeschooling, anything! If you have a particular interest, let us know ahead of time so we know which of us should guide you :-)
  • Half dozen eggs$4.00 per itemFresh duck eggs from our small flock - these are the size of jumbo chicken eggs and much tastier!
  • Dozen eggs$7.50 per itemFresh duck eggs from our small flock, these are the size of jumbo chicken eggs, and so much tastier!
  • Handmade Goat Milk Soap$8.00 per itemMessage me to arrange a time to come to the farm store and select your soap, there are so many options, and many different products!
  • Cornmeal, Homegrown 1 Pound$6.00 per item1 pound of our own Glass Gem corn, grown and freshly ground here, great for fresh-baked cornbread over the fire!
  • Cornmeal, Homegrown 1/2 Pound$3.00 per item1/2 pound of our own Glass Gem cornmeal, freshly ground and sifted - fantastic for cornbread over the fire!
  • Meringue Granola 1 Pound$8.00 per itemIf you love crunchy, crispy granola then this is for you! Rather than the traditional sugar-butter syrup coating, we make this with a lower-sugar meringue from our duck eggs. This makes a super-crispy cereal, with no added fat, and I've cut the sugar to less than 1/3 of most granola, just enough to taste great, and with the duck egg whites, it actually has added protein - win-win-win! This is definitely one of my go-to breakfasts with some homemade yogurt and raw honey drizzled on top (right behind my all-time favorite of a fried duck egg, of course!) We have 3 flavors available: Blueberry Ginger Cranberry Apple Mango Pineapple and no added fruit if desired. Ingredients are simply: Dried fruit, pecans & walnuts, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, oats, sugar, duck egg whites, sea salt.

  • Plant ID/Foraging Tour$25.00 per itemA roughly hour-long tour around the farm identifying a variety of plants, from garden weeds to field plants, including some edible and some to avoid! We will try to customize this to your interests, so let us know if you're interests lean towards medicinals, or foraging edible plants, garden plants, trees, etc.
