A private, dog-friendly yurt with a hot tub overlooking a North Devon cider orchard

There’s a chance of spotting red deer on the mile-long driveway that leads to Yurt in the Orchard. It's a daily delight of a stay here. Likewise the chance of spotting a barn owl from the hot tub outside your yurt and the visits from free-ranging chickens. And that's not to mention the birds and bees in the apple trees that make up your view. This place is a wildlife lover’s dream in North Devon – and, as it’s just a few miles south of Exmoor, you can look out for those famous wild ponies on days out too. But you don’t have to be here for the wildlife to enjoy this place. It ticks plenty of boxes for all sorts of glampers. It’s a secluded and romantic place for couples but it’s also family and dog friendly as well. It’s in the countryside close to Exmoor National Park but it’s not too far from Dartmoor and the North Devon Coast for day trips either.

The yurt is the main event here but it’s supported by other structures that make up a lovely little private camp on the edge of a two-acre cider orchard. The yurt is your bedroom with a made-up double bed and optional camp beds for kids if you’re bringing them with you. Outside you have your own private hot tub, a little timber cabin with a shower and eco-friendly electric compost loo, a well-equipped shepherd’s hut kitchen and an outdoor sink. There’s also a Kadai fire bowl for campfires and campfire cooking. That’s a tempting option in this rural area of dark starry skies.

Your hosts here are Chris and Debbie, who, apart from the chickens, will be your nearest neighbours. After a warm welcome, they leave you to enjoy the place but are never far away if you need them. They send on their tips for places to visit in advance of your stay so you can plan your days out. Those might include a long slow walk to the nearest pub (four miles or so away) or a drive across Exmoor to visit Lynton and Lynmouth, spotting those wild ponies on the way.

The Yurt in the Orchard is our only glamping area, and all facilities are private. The Yurt has a double bed, and a camp beds can be added if you bring additional guests, or a Bell tent can be placed next to the yurt if children or adults feel adventurous. Up to 4 guests as standard, but please contact us if you have a larger group. You have exclusive use of a shepherds hut kitchen and hot tub next to the yurt as well as a private electric compost toilet (odour free and no need to empty) and a heated shower. The kitchen contains a microwave, toaster, induction hob, fridge, and a kettle, and there is a Kadai wood cooker, with enough wood to get you started. Extra wood packs are available. An outdoor sink area with drinking water tap is also provided. The hot tub has coloured lights and a Bluetooth speaker, and the kitchen also has a breakfast bar area. The site has a good 4G signal. The orchard and adjoining land are full of wildlife and livestock, with chickens roaming when they are allowed, so a well behaved dog or two is welcome to stay. No dogs in the hot tub please! As the Yurt in the Orchard is our only glamping area, we are always available to help, but we will otherwise leave you in peace. The area is great for walks, and is close to the famous Two moors way footpath that leads to the beautiful village of Witheridge which has a pub, shops and post office. The wonderful Stag inn is also well worth a 4 mile stroll for lunch. By car you have easy access to both North and South Devon coasts, as well as Exmoor and Dartmoor. North Devon has just become one of only 12 world surfing reserves, joining the likes of Malibu and Santa Cruise, California, and the Gold coast in Australia. The area has many fine beaches, and Woolacombe bay was named the UK's best beach in 2021 by the Sunday Times. Lynton and Lynmouth is home to the worlds steepest working water powered funicular railway, as well as the stunning Valley of the Rocks. The area around Braunton Burrows is a Unesco biosphere for its landscapes, wildlife areas and cultural heritage. Exmoor was the UK's first national park, and can be explored on foot, by car or horseback. Exmoor is also a dark sky reserve, so on a clear night on site you might see a shooting star or two.

A magical place with wonderful host

What a magical place ✨️ We had such a lovely, peaceful time. Fresh eggs from the chickens on arrival and some scones, cream and jam - what more could you ask for. If you want to escape the rush of life and have some down time, this is definitely the place and it had everything you need to be comfortable and relax. We loved it so much ❤️

Grate place to stay for those with kids and without it grate for adults oswell grate get away from bussy towns and roads . Definatelly helps to clear your mind from daily struggles and routine . Owners of your twas such a lovely people everything we needed was there ❤️ and more has been offered if needed games towels ect..lovely place to stay for those wanting to spend some time in countryside with hot tub and peacefully nature around lovely stay even in the end of September where nights are cold it was worth every penny 😊 xxthank you to lovely owners of the yourt for everything ❤️💕

We were looking for a quiet, relaxing retreat, and the Yurt in the Orchard exactly that place. A little gem in peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The shepherd's hut is well equipped, the yurt is super comfortable and the hot tub is a nice bonus. There is also a gazebo should the weather be too hot (or wet!). The fire-pit has a kadai pot where we made a delicious curry! The small toilet block is clean and eco friendly. Chris was an attentive host with excellent communication, only a WhatsApp message away should you need anything. We would definitely come back

Berriman’s adventure x

We loved our 3 night stay. We were a family of 5 and had a snug yet very lovely stay in the yurt. The hottub on a clear night was beautiful and we sat there for quite a time looking for shooting stars and spotting satellites. We cooked every meal on the campfire and loved using the pizza oven. This stay is incredibly rural which is lovely for the peace and quiet but come prepared with all your groceries!! We’d definitely go again and absolutely recommend Berriman’s adventure x

Would highly recommend yurt in the orchard the kids loved our stay Chris and Debbie are fantastic hosts always on hand if we needed anything all the facilities were spotless and clean and homely Kids particularly liked the hot tub and the visiting chickens if your about on your travels would highly recommend the bell Inn pub in Chittlehampton for food which Chris recommended so thanks for that 👍 also the big sheep in Bideford the kids loved that for a day out all in all we had fantastic break away

Great stay at the Yurt

I loved the Yurt in the Orchard, beautifully designed space which feels so private, spacious and personal. Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, a very comfy double bed, a camp bed set up for my child which she was happy to sleep all night in. The hot tub is glorious and saw a lot of use. The chickens coming to visit is lovely. My daughter ran around saying good bye to every part of the site as she loved it so much.

Glamping with teens!

We were thrilled with the accommodation. We loved having all those facilities to ourselves and it was perfect. The owners were so kind towards us and our slightly problematic rescue dog! Our teenage children aren't keen on camping but loved it here. We particularly loved being in the hot tub at sunrise and listening to the red deer - the noise was incredible. Loved the isolation too and had never been to this area of Devon before which was magical.

We had a lovely 3 night break at the Yurt in the Orchard! Chris and Debbie have created a special home from home feel but with the peace and tranquility thrown in! The kitchen had absolutely everything that we needed and the yurt had lots of games, blankets and even hot water bottles for chilly nights! The hot tub was a massive hit with our teenage daughters too! Would love to return and fully recommend!!

We had a wonderful time at Yurt In The Orchard, located on a stunning patch of land, a sea of trees, bird song and nature, simply divine. The beautifully handcrafted Shepard’s hut kitchen area which was such a luxury having a fridge, toaster etc, well equipped and a yummy welcome treat too! The yurt was lovely, the most comfortable bed, Chris was very accommodating with our sleeping arrangements for the children, they loved the bunkbeds! We had no issues with being too cold, the cosy bedding was just right. Obviously the hot tub was a big plus especially when it got dark, it’s magical! We had some welcomed visits from the chickens in the morning too. The shower was brilliant, lovely and warm, Faith in Nature body wash and shampoo is provided. We could not fault anything, every detail has been thought of, it was an amazing relaxing break away.

Yurt In The Orchard is the perfect mix of luxury in a beautiful, natural setting - the best of both worlds! The site is made even more fantastic by the hosts who are very hands-off but are available whenever needed. They were incredibly accommodating of our 6 month old baby boy; erecting a gazebo for shade and bringing the chickens up to meet him! On top of this, they provide everything that you need and more. The things that you typically forget to bring like utensils, condiments, and coffee supplies are all provided and we were welcomed with a lovely cream tea, milk and fresh eggs from their chickens! The yurt itself is fantastic and our little one slept soundly throughout the night as the only sound you will hear is the owl (which we spotted) and the surrounding wildlife. The yurt has a socket so you can charge your phones (the 4g signal is great!). The shepherds hut kitchen is beautiful and would be lovely to sit in on a rainy day, and shower and toilet facilities are fab! The hot tub was so lovely at night, especially on clear nights when you can see the stars! We will definitely be back again!

Holidaying in the hut!

Well start to finish it was fantastic, I honestly can't have wished for more. Everything we needed & wanted were accommodated too. All attention to detail was also here. The views, orchard, wildlife and the extra luxuries were perfect. I can't actually say one bad thing. Chris & Debbie were so friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We were lucky to hear the Stags in rutting season which was fantastic! The hot tub is amazing best one by far I've been in Bluetooth speakers and lights! Complimentary scones and Bono's for pups were so kind! It really has been done so lovely by you both. We are looking forward to our next stay with you. Again Thank you!!

A rustic retreat wrapped in luxury

What a perfect spot to escape! A rustic yet beautiful camp with all the luxurious trimmings to make it a lovely break away. The hosts are so friendly, and made you feel instantly at home and the dog Wilf is so sweet. They very thoughtfully hung bunting for a birthday during our stay. Watching the shooting stars from the hot tub was a highlight. Will definitely be returning and would recommend without doubt to anyone looking for a break away in a private little slice of the countryside.

The stay here was absolutely wonderful. Peaceful and beautiful. Apart from the hot tub which obviously is a big highlight, the wood fire pizza oven was sublime. The hosts Chris and Debbie also went that extra mile setting up a little extra for my wife's birthday for when we arrived. We will definitely be coming back!

A relaxing stay

We absolutely loved staying at the Yurt in the air hard. It was a beautiful location and the weather was perfect. The yurt, Shepard’s hut and shower hut were very spacious with every facility we could need and more. We spent the first evening making pizzas on the fire pit and in the hot tub and we loved it. We took our doggo Baxter (they even put his name on his water bowl) and he met Chris’s dog Wilf, they had a lovely run around. Both Chris and his son were lovely and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely stay again, one of our favourite places we have stayed with amazing value for money! Thank you for having us, we had the most relaxing stay!

A Yurt set alone in a 2 acre orchard down a mile long oak lined track on the edge of Exmoor. A private hot tub, as well as a private shepherds hut kitchen, shower and toilet. An idyllic and peaceful location in North Devon with 4G! The Yurt has a double bed for up to 2 adults, and a camp beds can be added if you bring up to 2 children. An additional bell tent can also be placed next to the yurt if the kids feel adventurous. Please contact us through Hipcamp following your booking if you would like to bring children.

Nearby attractions

Yurt in the Orchard is four miles from the village of Witheridge and 10 miles south of Exmoor National Park. The Two Moors Way, coast-to-coast walking route passes close by and provides a route to walk to the village of Witheridge where you’ll find the closest shop and pub. The quiet country lanes around site are also great for walking but, of course the national park, has some excellent places for that too. The Tarr Steps (16 steps) are a popular place on this side of the park to visit on a walk. It’s the longest clapper bridge in England, constructed of stones and boulders only dating from at least Tudor times and crossing the River Barle. The Exmoor Pony Centre (13 miles) is nearby and offers a chance to see and support the protection of the wild horses of Exmoor. The twin coastal villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (30 miles) are other popular places to head for with the tallest and steepest funicular railway in the UK linking them. There’s also the Valley of the Rocks with its population of feral goats just outside Lynton. For surf and sand, head west instead to Woolacombe Bay (35 miles) or Braunton Burrows (30 miles). Dartmoor National Park is a similar distance to the south, a drive of about an hour. South Molton (nine miles) and Tiverton (14 miles) are two towns worth a visit, within half an hour in the car.

Food and drink

A taste of apple juice pressed from the orchard’s apples and some eggs from your host’s chickens are a lovely welcome gift. For basics, you can head for the two general stores in Witheridge (four miles) and, for more than that, pretty South Molton (nine miles) is one option, Tiverton (14 miles) is another. Both have a range of independent shops and supermarkets too. Witheridge is also the direction to head in, for a meal at the most local pub. That’s The Mitre Inn, a 17th century pub with a fireplace, seating out front and a menu of good pub grub. If you’re in the area on Sunday though, your hosts recommend The Stag Inn in Rackenford for a roast. It’s just a little further, but also a pleasant walk. And if you don’t mind hopping in the car for good food – make your way to The Mason’s Arms (five miles) in Knowstone. It’s a pretty thatched inn with Michelin Star food and drink.
