Relaxed camping in a riverside meadow in north Devon

The River Taw, rolling hills, and grazing Highland cattle will all feature in the photographs you’re bound to take at this north Devon campsite. But photographs don’t quite do Wolf Meadows Farm justice. They can’t capture the sound of that trickling water, the taste of the organic eggs at breakfast, and the smell of woodsmoke from your campfire. It’s also pretty hard to record an image of the kingfisher that whizzes down the river or the starscape that’s visible on clear nights. You’re better off just drinking it all in and putting your phone down – after all it’ll soon be out of battery and here, at this rural campsite deep in the Devon countryside, there’s nowhere to charge it back up.

This is a back-to-basics campsite on a 30-acre site that’s being sustainably and organically grazed by Highland cattle under the watchful eye of ecologists, Marcus and John. Their approach is helping make these meadows what they are – a haven for wildlife. Stay here and you might spot egrets, warblers, salmon and, if you’re really lucky, an otter. For the best chance of that, nab a riverside pitch. For more space, head for the grassy meadow where you can choose your spot and pitch up with friends if you’ve brought them. In line with the eco-friendly approach, toilets, which are a short walk away, are composting and other facilities are basic: a hot water shower and a washing-up sink.

This is rural Devon and there’s no major attraction next door but it’s a pleasant and manageable drive to many. The coast, for example, is a half hour drive away with many tempting spots to choose from: the long stretch at Saunton Sands or Westward Ho! near the harbour village of Appledore. And to top it all off, Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks are both within a similar distance.

The main meadow which is around 25 acres has the Taw river surrounding its boundary. The water is crystal clear and there are amazing areas where you can paddle and deeper areas to have a swim. These pitch-up areas are limited but all within 5 metres of the waters edge. Wild life ranges fro families of geese, ducks and the occasional swan, and occasionally you can see the odd salmon fish jumping out the river. Remember this is eco rustic wild camping without any frills, but within a safe environment on a fully working farm. It gives you chance to be at one with nature and your surroundings. AROUND wolf meadows farm Weather you seek the treasure trove of wildlife, birds, bats, butterflies, otters or flowers or an animal feeding experience, a mountain bike ride through the bluebell woods, from cycling to surfing North Devon and Wolf Meadow farm has it all, prepare to be astounded, there's no shortage of things to keep you occupied

Wolf Meadows Farm
Wat een geweldige plek, uniek! Zwemmen in de rivier en midden op het Engelse platteland. We hadden in het weekend alleen last van de buren die tot laat s’nachts luidruchtig waren en muziek maakten. Dus 2 nachten oordoppen in. Zou volgende keer vragen naar een nog stillere plek de camping is groot genoeg.

From the host
The farm is owned by ecologists couple, who are passionate about the outstanding wildlife the farm supports. Their priority is to conserve and enhance the farm for nature, and grazing livestock is integral to this goal. Managed organically (without the use of artificial pesticides, fertilisers and other chemicals), the grassland is grazed by a herd rare and endangered cattle, it is nestled within a private stretch of the idyllic Taw river within the truly enchanting valley full of wildlife, set in the beautiful North Devon countryside. Traditionally managed, flower rich meadows bordered by dense berry and flower filled hedgerows and ancient woodland. The meadows are also home to the flock of laying hens, and their guardian cockerel to provide the most delicious organic eggs. Be inspired by nature, reconnect, be happy, sleep, fall in love. Turn off your phone and savour the quiet. Rise with the sun, marvel at the dawn chorus, awaken your senses and feel revived to back pedal, muse, and wonder. At dusk bats fly overhead and owls can be heard calling across the river, which itself is home to not only salmon, but warblers, curlews, egrets, otter, geese, ducks and swans....
Nearby attractions

Wolf Meadows Farm is in the North Devon countryside about nine miles from the market town of Barnstaple and less than 20 miles from the coast. There’s the quaint fishing village of Appledore and the beach at Westward Ho! to the south and Saunton Sands to the north. Coombe Martin and the edge of Exmoor National Park are a little further (21 miles, 40 minutes’ drive). It’s about the same to Okehammpton on the top edge of Dartmoor where you can visit Okehampton Castle. There are 20 acres of pleasant gardens to explore at Marwood Hill Gardens (15 miles) but kids may prefer the excitement of spotting exotic animals at Exmoor Zoo (17 miles). The closest attraction to site is the Cobbatton Combat Collection, a military museum, just five miles away.

Food and drink

You can buy organic eggs from the on-site chickens. For more than that, there’s a little community shop in High Bickington village centre, just over a mile away and a range of supermarkets and shops in Barnstaple (nine miles). For a meal out, the closest place is The Rising Sun, just over two miles up the road. Alternatively, head a little further to the thatched Exeter Inn in Chittlehamholt (four miles) where the menu includes a range of gourmet burgers.
