Unpretentious and peaceful camping in an underrated spot

The camping pitches at Palace Farm are spacious, level, peaceful and campfire friendly. The site has clean facilities, friendly owners and a pub within walking distance. What more could any canvas-loving camper ask for? This is simply camping done well in the Kent countryside, less than an hour’s drive from London.

The campsite’s flat, grassy field holds up to 25 tents around its hedgerow edges with the centre left free for games and general haring around. Three pre-erected bell tents provide the slightest hint of camping glamour, but even these offer a simple set up: mattresses provided, a cookbox available at an extra charge. Showers are hot, loos are clean and logs are available to buy on site. And there's a sensible quiet-time policy too which means everything falls quiet around 10pm. All in all it’s good, honest Kentish camping with no pretensions to be anything else.

In addition to the good old-fashioned fun of camping, it’s the location in the Kent Downs which makes this place stand out. There’s a pub with a beer garden, a day out at Doddington Place Gardens and a farm shop all less than a mile from here. On top of all that, the moated Leeds Castle and the medieval town of Faversham are within 10 miles of your pitch, historic Canterbury and seaside Whitstable are just a little further.

Busy days, quiet nights. Life’s good at Palace Farm.

Grass Camping Pitch
Small but perfectly formed
Small site - seemed to be mostly tents, simple but clean showers and toilet block with washing up facilities - loads of grass down the middle for kids to play. About a half hour drive from Whitstable, and a 5 min walk to the local pub that has a big beer garden and kids play area.

Grass Camping Pitch
Quiet campsite, clean facilities
A lovely quiet campsite in beautiful Kent countryside. Pitches very spacious even for our 6-berth tent. Very clean facilities which were kept topped up with loo roll etc. Good washing up facilities and useful to have a freezer for ice blocks. Very good base for exploring that part of Kent.

Grass Camping Pitch
With just 25 pitches on a flat field this campsite is a great size for an easy camping trip. The toilets and showers were clean and in good condition. There is a clean water tap and a washing up area. Plus a separate freezer area for cool blocks. So all facilities are covered. Hot water was good in the shower too! You can hire a fire bowl and wood. Otherwise no open fires allowed. And no scorching of grass via stoves allowed. Very relaxed feeling to place. Big hedges run down the sides of the field and kids love to play in them and eat blackberries. Next door is a large field good for games away from the tents. Locations of the site is good too. Close to a cute village with pub. Also Leeds Castle, Whistable for the beach or other attractions such as the wild breeds centre, howletts wildlife park and digger land. We had a lovely long weekend there.

Grass Camping Pitch
I booked a pitch at Palace Farm Campsite midweek recently in Cool Camping. The booking process was straight forward, and followed the instructions provided to get to the campsite. The campsite was easy to find by car (make sure you don't run over any chickens when you get there). The camp grounds are the sort where you park your car alongside your tent pitch, so no worrying about having to carry all your gear any distance. We rented a fire bowl from the campsite and brought our own logs along (we had plenty lying around at home - although you can purchase them there) and had a wonderful fire in the twilight, cooking our meal directly on our fire before settling down for the evening. At one end of the campsite, the washroom facilities are clean and well maintained. Hot water seemed available for the entire duration of our stay. Lights were on at all times from the washroom, which gave a light illumination to the entire campsite, so I'd suggest no torches needed here. The main reason we booked into the campsite at such short notice was to see if we could catch any of the Persied meteor shower and I can confirm, the sky was dark enough to get a great view of many stars. I managed to see several meteors over just an hour or two in the evening, so I'd suggest that if star gazing is your thing, this isn't a bad location for it in the south east.

Grass Camping Pitch
We stayed here for 3nights at the end of July and found the hosts friendly and approachable throughout the stay. The pitches were well spaced out and you never felt you were squeezed in at any time. The kids had plenty of space to run about without us feeling they were interrupting the enjoyment of other campers. The facilities were clean and well maintained with Hot water on call 24 / 7. Fire Pit and wood were available (albeit at a cost) but were a great addition. We had a few wet nights but were pleasantly surprised at how well drained the fields were, no doubt linked to their old use as Strawberry fields, so just damp grass to encounter in the mornings. They could benefit from a local walking map being on display in the Freezer room that we could have photo'd or bought as theer are plenty of trails and footpaths around too. Overall a great stay in a great location.

What a lovely site! We've just returned from 3 nights there, and it was small but perfectly formed. A large, lovely, flat field with plenty of space between pitches, and a choice of morning or evening sun. Washroom facilities were kept very clean throughout. Plenty of local walks and within driving distance of lots of attractions. The local village has a great butcher's shop for your sausages and ice cream!

This is a small, one field campsite that is maintained very well - the grass was lovely and lush and the pitches a nice big size. We only have a small tent but loved the space. The toilet block was small but clean, and the showers lovely and warm. Although we were only there for a weekend this seemed very much a family site, and although our kids have outgrown coming away with their parents, I enjoyed the relaxed family atmosphere with kids playing all round. The owner was very friendly and welcoming on arrival and shared some laminated local walks with us as we hadn't been able to buy a map. The pub is a 5 min walk away if you don't fancy cooking and the locals very friendly and welcoming. This is a lovely campsite and the only reason it doesn't have a 5* is because I'd love a little shop for milk or ice-creams either on site or nearby, but the co-op is a short drive away so not the end of the world.

We enjoyed our second stay at this well looked after, clean and peaceful campsite; with good facilities including a freezer for our ice blocks to keep the rosé on the chill. :-) Graham was really helpful as a source of local information and history i.e. I needed to find somewhere to work on the Monday as we stayed the Sunday night and he pointed me in the right direction when I emailed my question in advance. Thanks Graham!!

Grass Camping Pitch
This was the second time we’ve stayed at Palace Farm but this was our first camping trip since before first lockdown. Tents are well spaced out, there are basic but really clean facilities and hot showers which is a must for me when camping. All that, with campfire cooking and smores just make it such a great place to stay. Ps the free range chickens are cool too!

Grass Camping Pitch
Easy and fast from London and comute. easy check in on arrival. you have forest, fields, birds and a pub as neighbours. the pitch is great size, it is a large camping area with 12 (i think) pitches either side. it has a small cabin with 2 wash rooms, 2 toilets, 2 washing up stands and 2 good showers with hot water. quiet by 22.30 which works for me. i got clean skies after a very hot day and the sky look amazing with so many stars you could see. owner kindly allowed us to use a freezer for ice. perfect for a quick chill 50min from London!

Great little campsite we have been many times. Very pretty field, lots of sun. Good pitch size, you can park by your tent which is really handy and you rent a firepit/buy wood. Great pub within walking distance. Owners are lovely and really helpful. Great and very clean on site facilities, everything you need. We had a lovely time catching up with our friends, lovely pub lunch and then a BBQ, we had a lovely fire and spent the evening star gazing. Highly Recommend

Grass Camping Pitch
Absolutely perfect in every way - enough space, facilities, non-commercial, really clean, firepit, and welcoming owner, with a great pub across the field and wooded running routes around. We will come back, but not with our children, they would be just a bit too noisy and stand out in this quiet space......

Flat site with well spaced pitches. Friendly welcome and we found everything clean and in working order. We recommend hiring a fire pit. Freezer for freeze blocks available. Site had a great family atmosphere, with plenty of space for children to play in the middle without getting close to the pitches. Chequers Inn is good and less than half a mile away. Our children enjoyed the gardens at Doddington Place, which was a short walk across the fields. Well placed, being close to Leeds Castle and Canterbury. We will definitely consider a return visit.

We had a lovely time at Palace Farm (despite the wind and unexpected rain!). The open fields were perfect for the children to run around safely and the camping field is long but with shelter from the bordering trees. The owners were friendly and helpful and recommended a lovely woodland walk just minutes away. We loved the calm and quiet and we will definitely visit again next year.

I read the top review, mentioning beautiful views, but there is no view to be found here, it's a tree lined field, and the next field is the same. For us, this was a disappointing holiday destination. Would have been better for a weekend visit. The facilities are OK they are clean, but abit tired. We felt Covid measures were lacking. We had a pleasant stay, but it wasn't memorable compared to other sites we've used in the past. The photos here are abit misleading as are the reviews. The owners are friendly, wood is well priced if you hire their fire pits. It was OK
From the host
The small quiet campsite offers camping for visitors with their own tents or those who want to stay in one of our pre-erected Bell Tents. We ask guests to respect the peace and quiet and not to make excessive noise. We expect campers to be quiet from 10 pm, and those making excessive noise after 11 pm may be asked to leave without a refund. If you are looking for somewhere to party this is not the campsite for you. Fire pits are available on the campsite for just a warm fire, or to cook on. fire Perfect for walkers and cyclists who want to explore the heart of the Kent Downs with its beautiful wooded valleys and mixture of farmland concealing many old and interesting villages or visit the North Kent Marshes less than half an hours’ cycle away. There are plenty of attractions in Kent; Doddington is close to Sittingbourne making Palace Farm a great base for groups and families interested in visiting the close by towns of Canterbury, Rochester, Chatham and historic Faversham. Leeds Castle and many other attractions, towns, villages and castles in Kent are available for day trips from Palace Farm. Day trips to London are also possible as we are so well connected by train and motorway.
Nearby attractions

There's good walking in the area with footpaths across the Kent Downs. You can walk from site to Doddington Place Gardens, a formal garden that's open to the public which surrounds a historic house. There's lots to explore in the wider area including the medieval market town of Faversham with the Shepherd Neame Brewery (seven miles), Leeds Castle (10 miles), Challock Forest (10 miles), Canterbury (14 miles), and Whitstable (16 miles).

Food and drink

The Chequers (01795 886366) in Doddington, half a mile away, serves very good pub food and has a beer garden and children's play area. They are very helpful if you have any allergies (separate gluten free fryer) or prefer vegetarian or vegan food. The George Inn (01795 890237) in Newnham is a very good pub with a popular restaurant less than two miles away. Both are Shepherd Neame pubs and you can visit the brewery for a tour and tasting in Faversham (seven miles away). You'll find plenty of other eateries and shops there too if you need supplies for the campsite, but for local produce, head for SW Doughty butchers and farm shop in Doddington, less than a mile from site.
