Off-grid yurt and shepherd's hut glamping on an organic farm with views across Kent's Eden Valley

Located just outside the perfectly preserved Tudor village of Chiddingstone, just an hour or so from London, 500-acre Bore Place Farm is an organic dairy farm, historic venue and environmental charity all rolled in to one. And now, with the addition of luxury yurts and shepherd’s huts, Bore Place can add glamping to its already string-laden bow.

As the name suggests, there’s a wealth of space to roam at Free Range Glamping, with a glorious hilltop position for all of the accommodation in a sprawling wildflower meadow. Glampers enjoy breath-taking views across Kent's orchards and heady hop fields – the huts and yurts face south across the aptly named Eden Valley – and the local area is awash with decent footpaths.

The yurts themselves are real works of art – elegant latticework walls, wooden flooring and a transparent crown for stargazing – and are comfortably furnished with wood-burning stoves, king-sized beds and futons for extra guests. Each has its own safari-style kitchen alongside, plus a firepit for late-night marshmallow roasting, and it’s a short stroll to your private composting loo. Shepherd’s huts, too, feature king-sized beds, woodburners and have compact kitchen spaces inside. They have en-suite eco loos but, for both hut guests and yurters, if you prefer proper flushing loos or want to take a shower, it’s a 300-metre walk to the farm where there are ‘proper’ facilities. The result is access to the goods when needs must but otherwise a wonderfully paired-back, off-grid glamping experience, with candle lit evenings, and a quiet, rural atmosphere.

“It’s all the best bits of camping – campfires, birdsong, and breathtaking scenery”, as friendly owner Chris tells us. “Combined with clean, dry, inspirational space, proper beds and a private toilet.” It's glamping, in other words, that hasn't completely left the fun of camping behind.

Set in the North Downs, there’s some fantastic walks and outdoor pursuits to enjoy. Bouldering (or mini rock climbing to the uninitiated) is surprisingly prevalent here. Chris can fill you in on the best formations, like Harrison’s, Toad, and Wellington rocks surrounding nearby Tunbridge Wells. For more sedate excursions, there’s a wealth of stately homes and gardens, castles and quintessential Kentish towns to visit. The eminently reachable village of Chiddingstone is one of the best-preserved examples of a Tudor street anywhere. Or if the lure of the organic farm setting is too much to resist, you could partake in one of Bore Place’s ecology courses – try your hand at green wood-working or simply enjoy a guided stroll around the multi-faceted rural setting.

Ash Yurt - 16ft, with outdoor kitchen

100%
(4)
Yurt · Sleeps 4
The 16 foot yurt sleeps upto two adults and two children. There’s a Kingsize double bed and a double futon, with sheets, pillows and duvets for each. Your own fire pit BBQ and outdoor kitchen is provided. This has a gas burner for cooking, a sink and all the pans, cutlery and crockery you might need. A starter pack of wood for the stove and fire pit BBQ, matches, firelighters and kindling is included. The yurt itself is completely off grid. Candle lamps provide light, and the lack of light pollution makes for exceptional star gazing, though do bring a torch! Bore Place, where the yurt is located is an environmental charity and organic dairy farm, pioneering renewable energy and reconnection with the natural world and the production of food. As a working farm there are various hazards - ponds, farm machinery etc. If you have children please make sure you supervise them. There’s your own private composting toilet, just behind the yurt, and toilets and a shower at the centre reception across the field (around 300m). As the yurt is in a meadow, it’s not possible to drive cars right up to it. Cars can be parked in the centre carpark, just near the toilets and shower and your luggage rolled to the yurt on our trolley. As it's such a lovely place, increasingly people are getting married here.  As such if you're staying on a Saturday night there may be a wedding in Bore Place house.  It's about 100m away, but otherwise so quiet that sound can travel.  If you're coming for tranquility, then message me with your dates and I'll find out if there's a wedding that weekend. Smoking is allowed outside, but not in the Yurt itself.

Two luxury yurts and two shepherd's huts in a Kentish meadow on Bore Place organic dairy farm. We started life in 2017 and our first luxury yurt proved such a huge hit that we invested in another one! We love being out in nature, but we also love comfy beds, kitchen facilities, and wood-burning stoves, so we feel Free Range Glamping offers the best of both worlds – rustic luxury meets a true outdoors experience. Our rural Kent Downs setting is such a beautifully special place – we hope you love it as much as we do. We invite you to play in the woods, sit round the fire and explore the farm. Bore Place operates as an environmental charity in the weald of Kent. An amazing creative place, with lots going on, and yet a real stillness about it. Guests are welcome to take part in our ecology courses, woodcraft and guided walks.
Nearby attractions

Famed as the 'Garden of England', Kent is bursting with bucolic attractions with many in the immediate vicinity of Edenbridge including Emmets Garden (01732 868381), Penshurst Place and Gardens (01892 870307) and Riverhill Himalayan Gardens (01732 459777). For history buffs, Winston Churchill's old countryside retreat Chartwell (01732 868381) makes for a fascinating away-day. The stunning grounds and National Trust-run house are filled with various historic artefacts including the former prime minister's very own paintings. Chiddingstone village itself (also owned by the National Trust) is described as the most perfect surviving example of a one-street Tudor village anywhere in the county. Elsewhere, art-filled Chiddingstone Castle (01892 870347), motte and bailey Tonbridge Castle (01732 770929) and childhood home of Anne Boleyn Hever Castle and Gardens (01732 865224) all offer tours and regular events. Back at the site, Bore Place (01732 463255) itself offers a wealth of walks woodcraft workshops and courses in sustainability, organic agriculture, horticulture, health and wellbeing courses.

Food and drink

For the best coffee around – and outstanding views of Bough Beech Reservoir – Ide Hill Community Shop (01732 750157),about a mile north of the yurt, is the place to go. Groombridge Farm Shop (01892 861753) boasts the finest Kentish produce – be sure to stock up on their famous asparagus. Cafe-wise, the beautiful Kingdom centre set in the Penshurst woods offers delicious healthy whole food dishes and great coffee in a lovely setting. It's open every day 10am – 5pm. There's plenty of nice pubs just a short drive away. The King Henry VIII (01732 862457) – a charming half-timbered Tudor pile – is the nearest (about 10 mins). They serve a fine selection of ales and a surprisingly varied menu of curries and pasta alongside pub grub classics. The Little Brown Jug (01892 870318) in Chiddingstone Causeway is a popular gastropub, a pleasant hour or so's walk away. The Castle in at Chiddingstone (01892 870371) is another handsome watering hole that's equally walkable and does good food. For a refined dining experience, The Wheatsheaf (01732 700100) in Bough Beech offers beautifully presented dishes, with much of the produce coming direct from this modern gastro's very own kitchen garden. You'll find supermarkets in Edenbridge, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge and Chiddingstone Causeway has a well-stocked village shop.
