Summit Camping, a scenic pop-up site in Cornwall, provides epic views on a small budget, with its positioning near the Kit Hill and other picturesque Cornish locations making this a great spot for friends and family alike. Bring your tent or campervan and pitch up within eight acres of land that neighbours over 400 acres of country park, with this wild camping experience ideal for the unfussy camper bringing their excitable kids and furry friends in tow.

Summit Camping is a laid-back affair. Its wild camping provides basic amenities such as portaloos, gas-powered showers with free biodegradable products to clean yourself with, and a freshwater tap. Complementing the pop-up site is a pop-up stall from host Tracy, providing the likes of free-range eggs, potatoes, jam, and honey depending on their availability. However, it's really for those who want to soak in their surroundings rather than staying on-site, as you'd expect from a campsite nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The camping field is located just below the track that leads to Kit Hill, which provides panoramic views of the sprawling countryside, stretching out into the winding moorland of Dartmoor and the heather-covered Bodwin Moor, both of which are also only a short drive away from the site. The more adventurous among you may want to take a dip in the small lake in Kit Hill’s Quarry, while those who want to stretch their legs should venture up to the 334 metres until they reach its peak, signified by the iconic ‘Kit Hill Chimney’ that can be seen from Devon.

However, Summit Camping isn’t just for those looking to increase their steps on their pedometer. Nearby towns and villages provide delightful days out among the local communities, with the ancient stannary town of Tavistock and the village of Gunnislake boasting a whole host of things to do. Take the kids to visit the donkey sanctuary near St Ann’s Chapel, enjoy the picturesque Tamar Valley Line – listed as one of the Great Scenic Railways – from Gunnislake station, and treat you and your loved ones to a trip around Cornwall that’s light on budget but heavy on memories.

This is such a beautiful campsite with absolutely incredible sunrise and sunset views. Lovely communal area with firepit makes sunny evenings a lovely experience. Everything was super clean and Tracy, the host was super friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again

Tracy our host was very welcoming, the location of the campsite has beautiful views, with the summit of Kit Hill a short walk away. Shower was a tad cosy, but nice and hot.

Summit Camping has outstanding Panoramic views over the Tamar Valley. The Tamar Valley, Kit Hill is in an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The field is located just below the track up to Kit Hill which gives you access to 400 acres of Country Park to explore, and a quarry with lake to swim in. On the Devon / Cornwall border, gives you so much to see and do. Dartmoor is 30 minutes away, and Bodmin Moor only a 15-minute drive. You can see them both from the field along with Caradon downs, The River Tamar, and out to Plymouth Sound and the Sea. Seaton, Looe and Bude Beaches are all within 40 minutes, plus Coastline along both the North and South Coasts all the way to Lands End. Dont miss the TamarCoast2Coast walks and canoeing just down the road a Gunnislake to Calstock. There is literally something for everyone here from Neolithic and Standing Stones, to riding, cycling, walking, adventure parks, beaches, moors, pubs and restaurants, sightseeing, fishing villages, National Trust Gardens, shopping, watersports, country pubs or just lying on the grass at Summit soaking up the view then sitting by the campfire on a crystal clear night. Callington has good bars, pubs, eateries and shops, Tesco, Spar, B&M. Micro pub, micro cocktail bar, pizza, Indian, Chinese, fish & chips. Louis Cafe and farm shop is just down the lane, easy walking. and we have lots of great village pubs within 5 miles.

Nearby attractions

Kit Hill, only a short walk up a track for the site, provides over 400 acres of Country Park to explore, with guests encouraged to scale its peak until they reach the ‘Kit Hill chimney’ from where they have a panoramic view of their Cornish surroundings. From here they can view both Dartmoor (01626 832093), a 25-minute drive away, and Bodwin Moor, a 30-minute drive away. The former boasts castle ruins for history buffs and herds of grazing ponies for animal lovers, while the latter is heather-covered granite moorland that stretches for nearly 210 square kilometres, both being ideal for the hikers among you. For the kids, St Ann’s Chapel has the Tamar Valley Donkey Park (01822 834072) with a big indoor children’s play area to keep them occupied, while the adults can tuck into the fresh produce in the Tavistock Pannier Market (01822 611003), 25 minutes away by car and open six days a week as one of the longest-running markets in the UK. For even more breathtaking views, hop on the Tamar Valley Line from the Gunnislake Train Station, which follows the River Tamar through some truly picturesque locales.

Food and drink

For something very local, venture a couple of fields away and you’ll find Louis Tea Rooms, a family-run and relaxed place to get your breakfast or lunch along with a tea or coffee. If you want something a little stronger, The Swingletree (01579 382395) pub is a stone’s throw away, serving food all day from Monday to Sunday with a large beer garden and children’s play area. The Royal Inn (01822 870214) in Horsebridge, a 10-minute drive away, is a 15-century pub situated on the Tamar Trail, said to have been visited by Charles I during the civil war. Now it serves daily specials including venison, pheasant, and fresh fish from St. Ives. The Rifle Volunteer (01822 851551) is less than five miles away at St Ann’s Chapel, and is also located in the Tamar Valley with views over the river of the same name, providing a friendly stop for you and your well-behaved furry friends, who will be provided with water and blankets upon request. Venture slightly further out and go to the Wheal Tor hotel (01579 363401) in a 25-minute drive, where you can enjoy a drink on the pergola and decking overlooking the moors.
