We have a mid wild pitch on the outskirts of the woods, lovely grassed area between trees. Our top field is perfect for motorhomes & caravans. Plenty of space to breath and relax. Located on the stunning heathlands of the Sutton Heath. We are surrounded by beautiful woodland walks, including the Sandlings walk and just 10 minutes from the river Deben. We have a bus stop at the top of the track and Melton train station is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive. There are access points onto public footpaths, leading to Rendlesham Forest. A famous site for UFOs! Sutton Hoo is a stone's throw away. Bring your bikes and explore the area on wheels. There is water access and portaloos. We do not have showers yet. You can park at the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic. As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings. The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). Lions Row is a great spot. Charlie the host could not have been nicer or more helpful. Very easy communication and check in, plenty of space, and very good facilities (including a lovely hot shower and hot water for washing up). We stayed in our campervan and it was perfect. The most magical thing was the birdsong from the wood next door. We were even serenaded by nightingales - a treat in itself. Would definitely recommend.

Beautiful, well kept campsite with plenty of space for everyone to pitch where they like and for ball games in the middle of the field. Very cute and tame piglets, lambs, chickens and goats wander around which my kids loved. My youngest got to bottlefeed the newborns which he was delighted with. Morag was a welcoming host and we were able to borrow some forgotten pans and cooking equipment. Being able to collect our own firewood (which was plentiful) from the wooded area was a bonus as most campsites charge a small fortune for logs. We never had to wait long for a shower or the loo and they were always pretty clean. We stayed during a heatwave so having the river so close by was fantastic. Kids were in and out all day playing on the boats. We had a great stay here and would definitely recommend.

It's a very pretty campsite, with spacious pitches and clean facilities. There weren't many people and were quite spread out - brilliant that everyone respected the 10:30 quiet time. We brought our own SUP and were able to enjoy the river. The shady "fairy garden" saved us when it was really hot! Debs and Hannah were always happy to help and it was easy to get hold of them, nothing ever seemed too much trouble.

We had a lovely weekend overall and really enjoyed the atmosphere and surroundings. We had a good time and felt relaxed during our stay. There were a few things that could definitely be improved though. The toilet facilities weren't very clean — there were only two available, and I actually ended up cleaning one myself. On the second day, when temperatures reached around 36°C, there was also no water available, which was quite difficult in that heat. Drinking water availability could also be improved, and communication was a little slow as messages and calls weren't answered quickly. Despite these issues, we still enjoyed ourselves and had a nice experience overall. With some improvements to cleanliness, water supply, and communication, this place could be even better.

This wild campsite is great fun. We camped on the open field because we have solar panels that need sunlight but camping in the wooded area looks a lot of fun and quite magical. Tobias and Joe couldn't have done more to help us. The vibe is relaxed and friendly. The portaloos were clean and always had paper and detergent. There is no shop of any sort within walking distance so make sure you stock up. The firewood we bought for £10 a crate was plentiful and dry so it burned very well. Fires must be off the ground so bring a burner or pay a tenner to hire one of theirs. A great campsite for those looking for a (nearly) wild experience run by down to earth, charming, fun people who let you get on with it but are there if you need them.

I loved camping at Holistic. It’s a lovely, big space and you get the choice to camp on fields or in the forest. There are walking trails straight from the camp site and close enough for other forest walks. We did the UFO trail in Rendlesham forest. Host is friendly and tries to assist with any issues. We were able to camp with friends. I know some other places don’t allow larger groups. Overall a lovely experience. Thank you. 🙏

Went here with our 2 year old and honestly it was brilliant. Worth knowing going in that it's a proper working farm - animals roam around freely and yes there's the odd bit of poo on the grass, but that's all part of it and our little one absolutely loved seeing piglets just wandering past the tent. The river was the highlight for us. It's a protected chalk stream so the water is crystal clear and really shallow - perfect for a toddler to just potter around in for hours. There are little boats to mess about with and we even spotted crayfish in there, the water is that clean. Firepits are dotted all over the site and free to use, just bring your own charcoal. Really nice in the evenings. In the mornings you can go collect eggs straight from the hens yourself which our son found fascinating. There's also forest school and organised animal activities which are a lovely touch. Morag is a really warm host. We'll definitely be back.

It was a lovely campsite, we set up our tent in the woods slightly outside of where we were meant to as there wasn't enough clearing for our huge tent in the main woods. Where we ended up staying was perfect for our needs. Jon was a lovely host, and gave us enough freedom to do our thing. The only negative, if you can call it that, was the facilities could do with a bit cleaning. I think the main camping forest could do with a bit of clearing of weeds/bushes which don't allow you to set up bigger tents. There's no running water and It's a long walk to the car, so just be prepared for that. All in all a great stay with the kids, nice and quiet. We would stay here again!

When to go

Summer is peak season at Wicken Fen, and the boardwalks can get crowded, especially on weekends and school holidays. Some of the best wildlife-watching opportunities are in springtime, while increased rainfall through autumn and winter makes the wild landscapes appear even more dramatic. The reserve is open year-round, but boat tours and bike rentals are only available from Easter through October.

Wicken Fen is located in Cambridgeshire, about a 40-minute drive from Cambridge.
There’s no public transport to the park, but trains run to Ely, a 20-minute taxi ride away.
