If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars - we are under one of Wales' Dark Sky Reserves!
This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent (weather permitting). Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell local eggs & sausages) and buy bags of wood & kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them on a lead.
Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Get a fact sheet on arrival and join mini-campers in wildlife hunts through the trees, looking out all the while for buzzards and red kites. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings, making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There’s also a football pitch.
Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a covered sink areas with fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Respect other campers: Be courteous to fellow campers and respect their privacy and space.
Pets: If you bring pets, ensure they are well-behaved, kept on a leash or have impeccable recall, and cleaned up after. Do not allow your pet to enter another camper's space.
Quiet time: Maintain quiet hours between 11pm and 7am. All music must stop by 10pm, and noise should be minimal after 11pm.
Campfires: Penn Meadow Farm allows fires; please use existing scorched areas if possible rather than creating new ones. Never leave any fires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished when finished. Wipe your feet prior to entering the Bell tents to remove any coal that may have become attached.
Cars/vehicles: Cars and vehicles can be on the field but should move minimally and always under 5mph. Car stereos should not be used for music entertainment.
Drugs and Alcohol: Drug use is prohibited, and violators will be asked to leave. Consume alcohol responsibly, and do not drive or move your vehicle after consuming alcohol.
We do not typically book Large non-family groups unless they are seeking a calm and peaceful stay. These groups must have authorization prior to the visit.

What a little Derbyshire gem: back to basics Whitehouse Farm Campsite is a simple site in a most scenic setting five minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Tideswell.
The site’s central location in the Peak District National Park means it’s a top spot for those who want to ramble or ride bikes – several circular trails leave from Tideswell and the traffic-free Monsal Trail is a five-minute drive away. And there’s plenty more activity if you require it too, as activity centres nearby can sort you out days of horse riding, abseiling, climbing and caving.
All this activity isn’t mandatory, of course – this is an equally fine location for days pottering off to local pubs, pigging out on pudding in Bakewell or taking a leisurely stroll around the Chatsworth Estate, 20 minutes away.
And if even that’s too much, you’d be welcome to spend some time loafing about on site: there’s heaps of space here, and as facilities have been kept quite minimal (just showers and toilets) there should be a good serving of peace and quiet to go with it all.
Guests are welcome to light up a barbecue or campfire for cookouts and keeping warm; Tideswell’s the place for supermarket supplies, and it’s also handily got a fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs for days when your firelighting skills aren't up to much.

This is the second time we've stayed on David's site, and the second time we had a fantastic stay. We pitched our tent in the woods by the river, such a nice place to wake up to! Very basic, with just a loo, but thats absolutely perfect for a quiet get away, getting back into nature.

Really lovely site near Brecon! Perfect spot for wild camping with river, forest and field and basic toilet. Night sky was so clear and the woods were lively with wildlife. David and his horse were both very friendly! Both me and my dog Barney had an amazing stay and did a lovely circular walk to Pen y Crug the following day. Will most definately be back!!

A fantastic place to camp. The facilities were great the welcome was lovely and the views amazing. Will definitely be back for a longer stay. Linda and hubby were very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. The facilities were clean and modern. The directions were clear and easy to follow. We enjoyed the fire pit and listening to the owls late into the evening. Will recommend to anyone looking to visit the area, and the eggs were delicious too.

This campsite is fantastic. We attend once a year in November. It has a somewhere to park, compost toilet and the great outdoors. The owner is a perfect gentleman. Always helpful, happy and accommodating.

White Peak Camping is such a beautiful and peaceful spot — absolutely loved our stay. The campsite is perfectly situated with easy access to stunning walks all around. The toilets were decent and clean, and the little phone-charging points are such a thoughtful touch if you need them. We also really appreciated the free fire pits, which made the evenings super cosy.
The owner, Janice, was great and very communicative, and her son Matt even came to check on us to make sure we didn’t get stuck with our van after the storm the night before. Really lovely people.
One thing to note is that they place strong emphasis on keeping noise down — no loud music at all — which we actually loved, because it made the whole place incredibly quiet, calm, and relaxing.
Highly recommend White Peak Camping if you’re looking for a beautiful, peaceful countryside escape. Thanks, Antje and Jay

Where to go
River Avon
Also known as “Shakespeare’s Avon” to distinguish it from other British rivers with the same name, this waterway is one of Stratford-upon-Avon’s green gills. It flows through the town centre and much can be walked via the Shakespeare’s Avon Way, Centenary Way, and Coventry Way footpaths, making bucolic routes downriver to Tewkesbury and upriver to Warwick and Coventry. Camp close to the river near Stratford-upon-Avon, Stoneleigh near Coventry, or around Evesham.
Grand Union Canal
Britain’s longest canal passes within nine miles of Stratford-upon-Avon at Warwick, where it meets the River Avon. The long-distance Shakespeare’s Avon Way trail can be walked from Stratford-upon-Avon to join the canal at Hatton Locks. This 137-mile Birmingham-to-London waterway showcases a greener, tranquil side to the big towns it passes, and crosses particularly pretty countryside on the Warwick-to-Solihull stretch. Narrowboat, walk or cycle the towpath, visit canalside pubs, and camp around Hatton with its 21-strong flight of canal locks.
Cotswolds AONB
These low-lying hills undulate south of Stratford-upon-Avon, and are especially famous for their picturesque stone villages. The area is the country’s largest AONB, and the best access from Stratford-upon-Avon is at charming Chipping Campden, 12 miles south, from where you can walk the 102-mile Cotswolds Way following the escarpment southwest to Bath. Chipping Campden has good camping nearby—one site sits on a repurposed bowling green.
When to go
The festival season gets going early in vibrant Stratford-upon-Avon with April’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebrations bringing a bonanza of pageantry and performances to town. October’s Literary Festival is another highlight. As one of England’s most popular destinations, try to avoid the town during school summer holidays and hot summer weekends. Stratford campsites have a longer season than many in the UK, mostly opening mid-March to mid-October.
