Simple, eco-friendly camping with epic views at the foot of a famed Welsh mountain range

Cwmffrwd Farm's, Pengenffordd off-grid, pop-up site is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking for simple camping in stunning surroundings. Nestled within 22 acres of wildflower meadows, the spacious pitches for campers and glampers alike make visitors feel like they've found a secret spot in South Wales - tucked away amid towering mountains in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change, with James working in the energy and environment sector and Pridie being both a survival instructor and professional outdoor performance storyteller.

The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm ensures guests' privacy compared to other, more densely populated sites, along with keeping this beautiful land unspoiled. This is reflected in the simple amenities, with composting loos in the meadows and a washroom and flushing toilet located in the 'The Byre', with hot water and an electric shower. Please note that no vehicles are allowed on the meadows to protect the ground and the people running wild and free! Cars park in the meadow entrance and campervan pitches are all located along the bottom of both camping meadows. Wheelbarrows are provided for moving kit.

The amenities may be basic here, but they're situated in a site owned by people who know a great outdoor spot with a view when they see one. Camping pitches are spaciously spread out across the meadows and the highest one has a gate that opens out onto the Waun Fach mountain range (with the highest peak of south-eastern Wales' Black Mountains at 811m.) Select your pitch, plant your tent / park your campervan, and explore your surroundings with minimal fuss. For glamping, choose between the two five-metre bell tents, the four-metre bell tent or the extra special 4m bell with linen and stove. The bell tents have the meadow all to themselves with a lovely babbling brook running down the mountain beside it.

Your mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes, while guests should ditch their phones (there's no WiFi here, allowing a firm disconnect from modern life) and replace them with books from the site's little outdoor library, which also contains charts to help you identify the resident wildlife. You and the kids can also enjoy a variety of workshops run throughout the year that feature folklore, folktales, bushcraft and wilderness skills - see extras and website for dates. Suffice to say, you won't forget Cwmffrwd Farm in a hurry.

Wildflower Meadow Tent Pitch
Such a beautiful location for a campsite, the views over the surrounding mountains and countryside were very relaxing. The campsite itself is very spread out and has a lovely feeling of seclusion even with other campers there, the pitches are nice and spread out and surround by wildflower meadow. The facilities were simple, 1 flush toilet and shower, 2 composting toilets and there was a freezer and kettle. Fire pits were provided and you can buy a firewood bundle for £10 cash. We enjoyed cooking baked potatoes and s’mores over the fire! Overall a lovely experience, the kids could run around the site freely as no cars are allowed, you park in the parking area and take your stuff in wheelbarrows to your pitch. I think the only downside was occasionally there was a queue to use the shower and flush toilet because they are in the same cubicle. However, because of the low number of pitches you didn’t have to wait long. We would definitely recommend and hopefully will return!

Beautiful spot
Stunning setting with heaps of space and privacy (the pitches are very spread out). The views are wonderful, we found it very relaxing. There's only 1 shower however (which shares the cubicle of the only flushing toilet) so could definitely do with more as lots of people waiting. Access to water (tap) in each field would also be very beneficial.

Very friendly and helpful hosts!
Lovely location with the sounds of nature, especially in the morning. Didn’t know there was a kitchen area (sink for washing up) and a shower. Also 3 toilets on site, one by the kitchen and 2 eco toilets in the fields. Great location for walks up and around Waun Fach. Fully recommended.

Fantastic, accommodating hosts
Absolutely lovely couple with a stunning setting for an off the beaten track, no frills campsite. Great communication before the stay through the chat. I camp with a Tentbox roof tent on the car and Pridie was more than accommodating. Both myself and the dogs loved it, and I think my favourite part was the complete lack of phone signal, enabling you to take in the stunning scenery and breathtaking night sky! Thank you both very much!

We had an amazing weekend in a gorgeous quiet location. Went for a Beautiful local walk and a delicious Sunday roast at the Farmers's Arms. The bathroom was in a beautiful building, very clean and with lovely warm water on a slightly rainy weekend. Pridie and James were so welcoming and helpful. Absolutely loved it! Thank you! One of my favourites ever
Beautiful location, with open meadow to pitch in and the mountain above the field, accessible from a gate. Pridie is very welcoming. There's lot's of local information available and I would say the site is particularly convenient for van campers.

A real treat in the Black Mountains
What an incredible site. Pridie is so lovely and welcoming. I have never (in this country) been to such a gorgeous, natural, spacious and well laid out site -ever. Massive focus on conservation and being respectful of nature. We had a rare opportunity of camping without our two sons and Pridie suggested that we take a look at the wild strip. It was tucked away slightly with a stunning view of the mountains whilst being nestled into the trees. She helped us take our kit to the pitch via her truck which we did not expect. All pitches have a fire pit and the compostable loos are again the best, that I have ever used. Always clean. Attached to the main building is a hot shower and conventional toilet- again, we found both to be spotless. Washing up, drinking water, maps and details of the local area can all be found. The real magic of the site is the ability to head up to Waun Fach and the surrounding hills by foot. We didn’t touch the car whilst we were there. Pridie teaches bushcraft and is a storyteller. The absolute perfect combination and her courses looked very cool. We loved it all and I have to say (and probably for the first time) we will be back and with the boys. Thank you so much!

Wildflower Meadow Tent Pitch
Our second stay this summer and we'll undoubtedly be back as we love this calm and peaceful camp site. Pridie and James always make us feel so welcome, and it's such a beautiful location. The ample spacing of the meadow pitches means it never feels busy, even when the site is full. We also love that cars are kept in one place by the entrance allowing the children to play freely and safely in the meadows. There's lots of things to see and do in the local area, lovely walks right from the site or just kick back with a cup of tea and enjoy the birdsong in the meadow.

Finding peace on a Mountainside!
Such a beautiful site surrounded by stunning mountain views. So peaceful - as a single mum with two kids it was surprisingly the most relaxing time just living simply, off grid, with daily walks straight from the tent (with no car or phone needed), and pitches spread out. loads of wildlife to see (wake up to red kite hovering above fields, grasshoppers, hares, bunnies, sheep, wild ponies, bats at bedtime). Pridie has a lovely Forest school area and there are rope swings and a nature trail. We loved it so much and can’t wait to go back!

Wild camping with an amazing view
We loved the camping from James and Pridie! Everything was nice, clean and the family was very welcoming. We had one night the most beautiful fireplace session with some music under the stars. Also you can just walk into the mountains from your tent and if you come back just relaxed and enjoy the amazing view again! Thank you for the beautiful stay and we'll definitely come back some day!

This is a special place and well worth visiting if you like dark skies and exploring wild country. My wife and I did three great walks during our four day stay, all between 10 and 14km long, straight from the campsite. The mown grass pitches are far apart, delightfully surrounded by meadow, which is in turn enclosed by native hedgerows. Facilities are clean and basic, the shower hot. We'll return.

Feel of wild camping!
My husband & I absolutely loved the site! We received a very warm welcome on arrival & offerred a choice of pitches as well as an invite to a evening of story telling & music, around a campfire, in the evening. The site peacefull, in beautiful wild surroundings & has spacious pitches, with the added bonus of a fire pit, as well all you need in basic facilities, which were scrupulously clean. Our perfect type of site! Definitely a place to return to!

Amazing site, very large pitches, in fact the biggest we have ever seen! Pridie the host was great, and had lots of information and was very helpful. The views are stunning from the site and perfect to explore the area from. There is a heated shower and washing up area, camp fires at the pitch, we will be back the next time we are in the area.

Lovely peaceful campsite
Lovely campsite, there are multiple fields and areas and I get the impression that Pridie and James deliberately never allow to many booking so that it still feels really quiet and peaceful. Facilities are basic and there is only 1 shower and 1 toilet (there is also another compost toilet), but because of how quiet the campsite is this was never a problem. The area was beautiful and everything about the campsite was really well thought out.
From the host
We are a pop-up eco-campsite, open between May and September, but calls or emails about staying outside of those times are very welcome. Give us a shout if we look booked up as we always keep back a few pitches for last minute campers :) Check in is between 2pm and 9pm on day of arrival and check out is by midday. Named after the stream that tumbles down from the mountain and through our twenty two acres of wildflower meadows, Cwmffrwd Farm is an off-grid camping sanctuary. Preserving a sense of wilderness is at the heart of everything we do, and to protect the natural biodiversity we keep things really traditional and basic. We only open for a set period each year and provide a limited number of camping pitches (so space is never an issue!) To minimise impact on the meadows and keep everyone safe, we have a no vehicles policy in the campsite and ask that guests park at the entrance to the field where wheelbarrows are provided for you to move your kit to the pitch you have chosen. As much as possible, we like to give everyone free range when it comes to choosing their pitch in our camping fields - so have a wander once you are parked and, when you are ready, grab a wheelbarrow and off you go! Please note that we ask everyone to pitch only on the mown areas in order to protect the meadows - this means that there is space for one booking per pitch...but your nieghbours will only be a hop, skip and a jump through the long grass when you want to visit them :) Contact us if you want to talk about pitch sizes and van pitch options... There is no additional charge for pets, pup tent, gazebo or awning. Certainly don’t come expecting Wi-Fi. Instead, enjoy rummaging around in the little outdoor library for books and charts to help you identify the resident birds and mini beasts, or go for a paddle in the stream and see if you can spot any creatures in the alder, willow, hazel and hawthorn that thrive across the site. Along with the seclusion of each individual pitch, the farm feels like it is tucked away too. It’s 12 minutes drive to picturesque Crickhowell (and a superb wild swimming spot), and 25 minutes to celebrated book town Hay-on-Wye and bustling market town Brecon. It’s best to stock up on food before you arrive, or shop at local supermarkets in Brecon, Abergavenny or the high street in Crickhowell.
Nearby attractions
Campers can embark on picturesque travels straight from their tent, with the site being within reach of Waun Fach, an open-access mountain with the highest summit of southeast Wales' Black Mountains. The gorgeous town of Crickhowell is a 15-minute drive away from the site, providing you with an array of shops to visit in this small Usk Valley community. In the surrounding area, the site resides in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, offering scenic walks through the stunning countryside. Enjoy the Brecon Promenade, a grade 2 walk along the river Usk, or look across the lakes and ponds as part of the Craig-y-nos route. Also tucked away in this National Park is the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (01874 658272), an award-winning indoor and outdoor centre with horse riding, an indoor climbing centre, and pony trekking trips. For a night out with the family, Theatr Brycheiniog (01874 611622) is a little under 30 minutes away, a modern theatre and community venue, with a variety of shows from ballet through to comedy clubs.
Food and drink
The Farmers Arms (01874 202132) is around a 5-minute drive from the site, located in the village of Cwmdu and serving pub classics and a delicious Sunday lunch. Nantyfinn Cider Mill Inn (01873 810775) is a 10-minute drive, with this stylishly rustic pub serving a traditional Welsh menu. For those with an adventurous palate, the New Gurkha Inn (01874 711581) is a little under six miles away and serves authentic Nepalese and Gurkha cuisine, with a specialised chef blending Indian and Chinese cuisine. Meanwhile, for those looking for an afternoon bite and a coffee, the Walnut Tree (01874 730358) is a riverside cafe and bar a 20-minute drive away, letting you enjoy fish and chips while overlooking the water.
