3 sites: cabin, yurt, trailer. Welcome to 28 acres of forests, mountains, creeks, a river and all that comes with it! We live in a little off-grid cabin deep in the Yalakom Valley in a small community of rustic-living and friendly folks. Please note that this property is located 40 km outside of Lillooet. Part of the road is a dirt road and a bit bumpy, best for cars that don't mind roughing it a little bit, and best for people who don't fear cliffs. You also lose service 5 minutes outside of Lillooet. The property is surrounded by one other large private lot on one side and some steep crown land on the other. You can explore our lot down to the river or you can drive to other locations like the Horseshoe (a great swim spot), Carpenter Lake (great for swimming, too), Lac La Mere (good for fishing), Carol Lake, and much more. All sites are located 150-200 feet away from our main house and share the same outhouse. However, it is unlikely for us to have more than one site booked the same time, so there is ample privacy. This is a somewhat rustic and rugged spot- if you are looking for fancy glamping this is not the space for you! Vancouverites, you've been warned!

We are a diverse 4-season guest ranch that focuses on providing a wilderness adventure. Enjoy the break from cell phone service and television as you explore the area. Hiking, biking and horse-riding trails start right from the property so you are always close to a new wilderness experience. Or get involved with our ranch-based activities such as horseback riding, riding lessons for kids, archery and hiking to make the most of your time at the ranch. Visiting our animals or watching the local wildlife roam in our horse pasture is a great way to get back to basics and enjoy ranch life. In the winter you can ice-fish or explore the area on snowshoes or cross-country skiing. Trails in and out of South Chilcotin Mountain Park lead right to our ranch, making it an ideal spot to begin your adventure or rest before heading home. You’re welcome to leave your car here during your backcountry stay. Contact us for more information on Work Crew Stays. Staying with us you accept the following: Our ranch is on Gun Lake Road, close to Tyax Lake, 30 minutes from Gold Bridge and Bralorne. It is about 2 hours west of Lillooet or north of Pemberton (6 hours from Vancouver) on a remote road with paved and gravel sections and no cell service. There is no cell service or TV at our location. Wi‑Fi is usually available but cannot be guaranteed due to weather and other natural factors outside our control. We have access to a landline if urgent calls need to be made. You are responsible for leaving the cabin/your room and the area around it clean and free of food and garbage. Each guest is responsible for cleaning the cabins when they leave, such as doing the laundry, washing all dishes. At the end of your stay, please bring all garbage to the main house so we do not attract critters and bears. We live in a true wilderness environment. The cabin water system uses filtered creek water and, though not common, there is always the possibility for water pressure to fluctuate. Weather and other variables can change quickly in the mountains. We expect guests to approach challenges with a positive, solution‑oriented mindset and to be respectful of nature, other guests and our team. We are experienced in dealing with nature’s challenges and will find a solution together.

Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park camping guide

Overview

About

At the some-10,000-hectare Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park, the serene lake is the main draw. Anglers are attracted by annual trout and char derbies and boaters appreciate the striking mountain views. Hiking includes an easy lake-side trail as well as rugged wilderness trails through terrain shaped by volcanism and glaciation. Lots of wildlife can be spotted, including moose, deer, and mountain goats, plus the occasional spotted owl or grizzly bear. The park’s rustic, 90-site lake-side campground has water spigots and pit toilets as well as a sandy beach, a boat launch, and picnic areas. The park is the traditional territory of the N'Quatqua First Nation.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Reservations are available from mid-May to September and must be booked through BC Parks’ Discover Camping website.
  2. If visiting on weekends or holidays (Canada Day, BC Day, or Labour Day) you’ll want to secure a spot as far in advance of your trip as possible.
  3. Over 35 sites are first-come, first-served. You might be able to score one, especially mid-week, if you show up right after check-out time at 11am.

When to go

Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park is open for campers from mid-May to September 30. If you are looking for a quieter experience, weekdays when schools are in session (May, June, and September) will be less busy. The cold-water lake is warmest for swimming in August.

Know before you go

  • This rustic wilderness park has just basic services, so you’ll need to be self-sufficient.
  • Daily and hourly canoe rentals are available onsite, as is a boat launch and dock.
  • This is a popular area to explore by horseback, and tour outfitters are available in Pemberton.
  • None of the park’s toilets or campsites are wheelchair-accessible.
  • The closest towns with basic supplies are D’Arcy, 22 kilometres away, and Mt. Currie, 50 kilometres away.
