This property was purchased nearly half a century ago. For the majority of this time the forest section you will be camping in was left undeveloped, apart from a few mountain bike trails. Recently, as a family, we have seen a large increase in the people traveling to the Sunshine Coast to escape the city limits. Unable to rock up to a campsite and pick our spot like we used to, it was easy to see a growing demand. We have taken everything we love about camping and done our best to give you a sense of what life on the Coast is really about. Please note: By entering onto the property you release all liabilities towards us as hosts. You are choosing to camp in a forested area that contains many hazards as well as potential threats. These include but are not limited to; Wild life (bears, bob cats, cougars etc), Fire is a serious threat to this region during summer months strict no smoking policy is in effect. Care should be taken walking around uneven surfaces. All campers are required to stay within camp boundaries fail to follow these protocols will result in being asked to leave. In a cedar grove, nestled among the ferns, a lotus belle tent awaits you. A unique bed and breakfast in an off-grid tent. Inside the belle tent there is a comfortable double bed with clean sheets, plump pillows, and a warm Pendelton blanket. A 'west coast homestead basket' with granola, fruit ,and farm eggs is provided for a nutritious breakfast. A Berkey water filter provides delicious water from our mountain well. Inside the tent, a comfortable chair looks out over the mossy forest toward the creek. There is room to stretch, and a couple of yoga mats to use. A stretch is especially nice after exploring the nearby trails through Mount Maxwell forest. The trails take through a varied and fascinating forest. Along the way are mossy knolls with vistas of the valley, ocean, and Vancouver Island. One trail leads all the way to Burgyone Bay. The belle is an off-grid seasonal tent with electric candles for lighting and a composting toilet. At night there are solar string lights--should you want them--which illuminate the path to the tent. On clear nights, turn the lights off to star-gaze through the branches.

Farm stays near Duncan guide

When to go

With its temperate climate, Vancouver Island has the warmest year-round weather in all of Canada, but it also gets the most rainfall. To avoid the wettest months (October to April), plan your camping trip to Duncan and the Cowichan Valley between May and September. July and August are the busiest months, so make sure you book ahead if possible. If you’re seeking the two sweet-spot months for camping, opt for June or September.

Know before you go

  • Public transit is limited outside of Duncan’s downtown area, so if you want to explore the greater Cowichan Valley, having your own vehicle is key.
  • There are a number of shopping centres along the Trans-Canada Highway and in Duncan, but once you venture off onto smaller roads, supplies become limited. Stock up where you can.
  • Bears and cougars live all over Vancouver Island, so follow park food-storage guidelines and wildlife protocols.
  • Even during the summer months, the rain can roll in, so be sure to pack appropriate waterproof clothes and gear to keep you warm and dry.
